4 I am focused. A Message from the President & Chief Executive Officer A MESSAGE FROM BRIAN GRISSLER 2 I am proud to report that 2010 was another successful year for Stamford Hospital. Through the commitment of our dedicated physicians, employees, and volunteers who live our values on a daily basis, we have moved closer to achieving our vision: to be the recognized regional center for health. Over the past year, our focus has centered on four key strategies to sustain growth and enhance our competitive position in an uncertain economic environment. These include: Achieving growth in selected services and centers of excellence Creating and supporting a culture of quality and customer service Enhancing physician/system partnerships, and Expanding an ambulatory network of branded facilities Across our four signature services of cancer care, cardiology, orthopedics and women s health, we are augmenting our clinical expertise and garnering recognition. We are the only hospital in lower Fairfield County to have its cancer program designated as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. We expanded our surgical team with the addition of two leading cardiac surgeons and received designation as a Primary Stroke Center from both the Connecticut Department of Public Health and The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Our Lumbar Spine Fusion Surgery Program became the first JCAHO-certified program in Connecticut and is complemented by the renovated inpatient Orthopedic/Neurosurgery Unit, designed to provide our patients with a healing and supportive environment. We also renovated the Whittingham Pavilion, home to our maternal-child health services, offering new mothers and their babies a more nurturing, home-like atmosphere. At Stamford Hospital, we are delivering best-in-class specialized care through our specialty centers staffed by committed medical experts in their respective healthcare fields. We ve assembled a team of recognized clinical professionals in bariatric surgery and launched the Center for Surgical Weight Loss to provide a truly comprehensive weight management program. We are raising awareness across the medical and cancer patient community for our CyberKnife Center the only facility in Fairfield and Westchester counties offering this cutting-edge technology to destroy tumors with pinpoint accuracy. The da Vinci S 3D-HD surgical system at our Center for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery provides surgeons from multiple disciplines with the best robotic technology to perform complex and delicate procedures with unmatched precision. In the face of continuing healthcare reform, we are investing strategically in expansion opportunities and are focused on quality improvement. We have broadened our reach into the community through our network of outpatient facilities throughout Stamford and lower Fairfield County, and our integrated physician network, Stamford Health Integrated Practices (SHIP), has grown to ten primary and specialty practices. We are implementing secure Electronic Medical Record platforms, which afford real-time access to patient information. The rollout of the eclinicalworks EMR to physician offices is continuing with over 40 currently operational, as well as the implementation of the Meditech EMR, providing access to patient data at the bedside throughout the Hospital. We will continue

5 to expand quality and safety initiatives and recently recruited a Chief Quality Officer to spearhead these efforts. This past year was marked by significant accomplishments across the entire organization, some of which are highlighted above. We generated a positive operating margin in fiscal 2010 for the seventh consecutive year and reported $22.7 million in net operating income, representing a 4.6% operating margin. As a non-profit institution, the surplus is reinvested back into the Hospital. This strong financial position allowed the Hospital to support the community with additional benefits and services, such as providing approximately $66 million in uncompensated care and reaching over 11,000 people through health and wellness outreach programs, designed in part for the underserved and uninsured. Recognizing the functional use constraints of the existing hospital campus, we are moving forward with our plan to build a replacement hospital that will provide a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet expansion needs over the next 25 years. We have obtained the necessary regulatory approvals and are commencing the initial infrastructure work that includes relocating roads, constructing a dedicated power plant and amassing a 30-acre parcel through a land swap with Stamford s housing authority, Charter Oak Communities. At the fiscal year-end 2010 board meeting, the Hospital s Board of Directors approved a $62 million plan for site work to take place during 2011 and This work will enable us to move forward with plans for Phase I, a three story state-of-the-art hospital that will house a new emergency department, expanded Heart & Vascular Institute, updated surgical suites and a modern intensive care unit. As we look to 2011 and beyond, Stamford Hospital is well positioned to stay at the forefront of delivering high quality healthcare to the community on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. We are adapting in the face of healthcare reform and the shifting economic climate as we strengthen our core clinical capabilities and advance the master facility plan, ensuring our ability to serve the greater community for years to come. Sincerely, Brian G. Grissler President & CEO

30 THE MASTER FACILITY PLAN 28 I am enhancing patient care. The Regional Center for Health Evolves Stamford Hospital is committed to providing each patient with the highest possible level of medical care by capitalizing on advances in medical technology and attracting and retaining the best healthcare professionals. The next major step in the Hospital s evolution calls for a phased-in replacement of our older facilities at the main campus with structures that incorporate breakthroughs in healthcare facility design as well as promote our Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care.

31 Over the next two years, we are undertaking the initial infrastructure work of the site plan, including construction of a new Central Utility Plant for energy generation and conservation. Upon completion, we will be positioned to prepare for the launch of Phase I, which features a state-of-the-art, three-story facility to house a new Emergency Department, surgical suites, an expanded Intensive Care Unit and consolidation of the Hospital s growing heart and vascular services. Once construction begins, it is projected that Phase I will take approximately three years to complete. Phase II of the Master Facility Plan features the construction of seven additional stories to the vertically-stacked three-story facility. It will house 305 private rooms to meet the Hospital s medical/surgical needs. In addition, the patient tower roof will be designed to accommodate a helicopter landing pad. The Master Facility Plan also calls for the development of a larger medical office building on campus, and we have entered into a land lease with an outside developer for this purpose. 15,108 Inpatient Discharges 5.0 Average Length of Stay (days) 209 Average Daily Census 2,270 Newborn Births 67,929 Total Emergency Services 47,710 Stamford Hospital ED Visits 20,219 Tully Immediate Care Center Visits 12,313 Inpatient & Outpatient Surgeries 29 TWO-THOUSAND-ELEVEN ANNUAL REPORT

38 STAMFORD HOSPITAL FOUNDATION 36 GIRAFFE WARMER Harrison Stoogenke was born eight weeks prematurely at Stamford Hospital on March 17, It became immediately evident that little Harrison was fighting for his life as he was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in grave condition. He was born with a hole in his heart, had lost 90% of his blood, and his lungs had collapsed requiring a ventilator for him to breathe. With a coordinated team effort of neonatologists and nurses, Harrison was stabilized through blood transfusions, medications and respiratory support. His health gradually improved with the use of a high-tech incubator, called the Giraffe Warmer, which created a warm and comfortable atmosphere for Harrison to get well. The Giraffe Warmer, one of two purchased through the generosity of an anonymous donor, was instrumental in keeping Harrison alive and providing him a state-of-the-art incubator in which this boy was able to gain the strength to survive. At four months old, Harrison Stoogenke, accompanied by his mother Susie, returned to the NICU to celebrate the donation of the second Giraffe Warmer THE 2010 PHYSICIAN PARTICIPATION CAMPAIGN The Stamford Hospital Foundation s 2010 Physician Participation Campaign was a success, with fifty percent of the physician community contributing. 39 37 TWO-THOUSAND-ELEVEN ANNUAL REPORT CLUB CHEFS Club Chefs of Connecticut have put their best dish forward in an annual gourmet showcase to benefit Stamford Hospital s David s Treasure Tree toy closet. This event is held the first Monday after Thanksgiving at a local Country Club. The 16th Annual Culinary Showcase, held on November 29, 2010, attracted almost 600 people, who spent an evening sampling a fivestar buffet and bidding on silent auction items. David s Treasure Tree is a toy closet named in memory of 15-year-old David Kanarek, a Greenwich resident who lost his battle with acute lymphomatic leukemia in David s parents Robin and Joseph Kanarek founded the cause as a unique way to honor their son s memory. Children in Stamford Hospital s Pediatric Unit can select from the toy closet a toy or gift to keep. The connection with David s Treasure Tree is personal for Club Chefs Vice President Jeff Perez, Executive Chef of Fairview Country Club in Greenwich. Perez first met David and his family more than ten years ago. David was a camp counselor at Millbrook Country Club in Greenwich, where, at the time, Perez was Executive Chef. Guests may sample dishes prepared by all the country clubs participating and further help raise money by bidding on silent auction items donated by the chefs and supporters Glen Arbor Golf Club s Tony Russotti, Sous-Chef and Carey Favreau, Executive Chef, flambé homemade marshmallows Chef Kevin Sullivan (r) of Innis Arden Golf Club prepares his tasting menu along with First Cook Joe Decarlo and Sous-Chef Stefan Fraundorfer TONY MUSILLI MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Tony Musilli, born and raised in Stamford, had a love for family, friends and all things golf. 41 39 TWO-THOUSAND-ELEVEN ANNUAL REPORT CRAIG D. TIFFORD Dr. Craig D. Tifford is a Stamford Hospital-affiliated orthopedic surgeon, who survived choriocarcinoma, a highly malignant and very aggressive form of testicular cancer. Subsequently, he founded the Craig D. Tifford Foundation, which has raised over $1 million through their annual fundraising galas to help fund research initiatives, raise awareness and provide living grants to patients and their families. Dr. Tifford was initially treated at Stamford Hospital s Bennett Cancer Center. As an expression of gratitude for the support he received from his family and friends, the Craig D. Tifford Foundation donated $10,000 to the Bennett Cancer Center for testicular cancer research. In all, the Foundation has given $35,000 in support of this important initiative. She will be missed by all the lives she has touched. We honor her commitment to improving the health and well being of the Stamford Community.

42 STAMFORD HOSPITAL FOUNDATION 40 HACKERS FOR HOPE The Bennett Cancer Center has been a beneficiary of the Hackers For Hope annual golf event that dates back to Each year, golfers (or Hackers) play as many holes of golf as they can in a single day. In 2010, the Hackers for Hope donation to the Center brought their total giving to over $1,000,000. Over the past seventeen years, Hackers for Hope has enabled the Cancer Center to purchase a vehicle for the local chapter of the American Red Cross to bring patients who didn t have a means of transportation to their treatments; underwrite this transportation program; and support the clinical trials program at the Bennett Cancer Center. The funding for clinical trials allows the Bennett Cancer Center to participate in more trials than any other community hospital in Connecticut. Patients who participate in trials have access to experimental treatments in addition to standard therapies giving them more tools to help fight their disease. Tim Brown, Founder, Hackers for Hope; Alfred E. Smith IV, Founder, Hackers for Hope; William Schaefer, Hackers for Hope Board Director; Doug Milne, III, Stamford Hospital Board Chairman. THE MOBILE WELLNESS PROGRAM The American College of Radiology accredited Mobile Wellness Program handled an unprecedented volume screening more than 2,500 women in Over 900 women received a no cost mammogram thanks to funding from the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich, the Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Connecticut s Early Detection Program and a generous anonymous donation. With significant outreach into the community, the program was offered this past year by over 50 corporations to their employees, over 25 school districts and town government offices to their employees, over 25 community clinics to their patients and over 10 churches to their members during on site screenings. The mobile wellness center is staffed by an Outreach Educator and a new Patient Navigator funded specifically by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This new position has greatly enhanced the program s effectiveness and quality of care to our patients.

43 Judy Block has been and continues to be a vital member of the Stamford Hospital volunteer organization and a long time community supporter. She has strong feelings that a prospering city like Stamford needs to have an exceptional hospital as its population continues to expand. Her generosity and compassion for others has underscored her gift that helped launch the No One Dies Alone program. In keeping with our Planetree philosophy, the program specifically ensures that no patient in their final days is without caring companionship. Planning for the future of the hospital, Judy has graciously arranged a bequest to specifically help meet the challenges that Stamford Hospital will certainly face. This planned gift has enabled Judy to become an honored member of The Clason Guild. The Clason Guild was created by the Stamford Hospital Foundation as its planned giving society to recognize individuals who make bequests or other estate gifts to meet the future health needs of the community. We are grateful to Judy Block for her personal commitment to Stamford Hospital and her vision to have us thrive for generations to come. The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. Nelson Henderson Judith B. Block The President s Circle was created to recognize donors that share our mission to provide high quality healthcare services to our entire community. Launched in 2004, the President s Circle program honors our annual leadership donors and assists members with services at Stamford Hospital. Foundation Board Director Ginny Landle was fortunate to have only utilized Stamford Hospital on a handful of occasions for her family s healthcare needs. This all changed in May 2010, when Ginny s mother suffered a devastating stroke. Ginny s mother, who resides in Brooklyn, refused to go to her local hospital so Ginny drove her directly to Stamford Hospital s Emergency Department. Ginny and her mother were met at the Emergency Department by a President s Circle navigator a non-clinical staff member able to provide additional support for President s Circle members. As the team went to work, the President s Circle navigator interfaced with the Emergency Department staff serving as a liaison for Ginny and her mother, explaining the testing being performed and streamlining admittance to the Hospital. Throughout her mother s stay, a President s Circle navigator met with Ginny every morning and served as an additional point of contact with knowledge of her mother s medical care as the nurses and doctors changed shifts. Through this experience, Ginny came to appreciate the value of the President s Circle program. For Ginny, the personalized assistance provided invaluable support throughout the hospital experience enabling her and her family members to focus their energy on supporting their loved one. 44 Dear Friends, On behalf of the Stamford Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming community support for Stamford Hospital. Your philanthropy has been critical in shaping the way we deliver patient care, and for that, we thank you. STAMFORD HOSPITAL FOUNDATION 42 People have a choice in their charitable giving and over the past fiscal year, more than 12,450 donors chose to support Stamford Hospital. Despite the current economic conditions, donors gave more than $5 million demonstrating a special affinity for our institution and our mission. We are fortunate to live in a community that fosters a spirit of giving and commits to the importance of health and wellness for their family, friends and neighbors. From the baby s life that was saved through the use of a newly acquired high-tech incubator to the children who learned to lead healthier lives through our KIDS FANS Fitness and Nutrition Services program, your gift gave them a better life. We are so grateful that you gave back. Thank you for your continued support of Stamford Hospital. With all of us working together, we can achieve the best in healthcare for our patients and our community. H. Darrell Harvey Co-Chair Stamford Hospital Foundation George Sarner Co-Chair Stamford Hospital Foundation

45 Dear Friends, Once again, the impact of philanthropy has made a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Thanks to the support of a generous community, Stamford Hospital has been able to provide the highest caliber of medical care, giving patients the ability to regain their health and improve their wellness. The President s Circle Program, the Foundation s leadership giving society, continues to set extraordinary heights in philanthropic support for Stamford Hospital. This exceptional core of donors leads by example with their annual unrestricted gifts of $10,000 or more and helps us to raise the level of care for all we serve. Over the past year, the Foundation s fundraising initiatives surpassed expectations. In particular, two of the Foundation s special events generated recordbreaking results thanks to the tireless efforts of our event committees, participants, volunteers and most importantly, our donors. The sixth annual Dream Ball, which was held on November 6, 2010, headlined music legend Paul Simon, attracted more than 900 guests, and raised more than $725,000 for hospital programs and services. Hope in Motion, which benefits patients of the Bennett Cancer Center, celebrated its 15-year anniversary by raising a record-setting $973,000. More than 4,000 participants came together on June 6, 2010 for this Walk, Run & Ride event. As we look ahead toward the upcoming year, we are both encouraged and honored to have the commitment of our philanthropic family to further advance the Hospital s initiatives. We thank you for choosing to support Stamford Hospital and our community. Christopher J.
