The resulting list showcases a variety of female attributes. As well as being talented lawyers and leaders, they are also role models for younger lawyers who find encouragement in their achievements ARGENTINA Patricia Lopez Aufranc, Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal Part of Harvard s Advance Leadership Initiative, Lopez Aufranc is a champion for gender diversity in Latin America. Patricia is inspiring for young women entering the legal profession. Hearing her and reading her works is truly a driving force, says one voter. She organises women networking events to coincide with the IBA annual conference and has carried out research into the role unconscious bias plays in the career development of lawyers. BRAZIL Adriana Braghetta, L O Baptista, Schmidt, Valois, Miranda, Ferreira, Agel Braghetta earns praise for her prominence in the international arbitration world. She is a former president of the Brazilian Arbitration Committee and currently vice president of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration. Braghetta is credited with growing her own firm s team to more than 30 professionals in the last five years. She is an excellent coach to the team, says one team member. Eliana Chimenti, Machado, Meyer, Sendacz e Opice Advogados

2 Chimenti believes that women should promote their assets, rather than trying to behave like men. One of Chimenti s mentees places huge value on having her as a mentor. Having the opportunity to discuss day-to-day issues with Eliana was a very enriching experience as she showed me the path to achieve balance between my personal life and my professional commitments, as well as to increase assertiveness and self-confidence, she says. Esther Flesch, Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados (in cooperation with Baker & McKenzie) Flesch is playing a leading role in the investigation into Petrobras the state-owned oil company at the heart of the corruption scandal that has engulfed Brazil. As head of Trench Rossi s compliance group, which she set up over a decade ago, she has counselled clients through some of their most testing times. Esther practises inclusion and diversity on a daily basis, says one voter, pointing to Flesch s decision to hire and promote two pregnant women to the partnership. Paula Garcez Corrêa da Silva, independent practitioner Garcez Corrêa da Silva has been recognised for her commitment to social impact causes. In particular, her dedication to developing public policy on recycling waste material is highlighted. Based in Porto Alegre, she has visited numerous cities in Brazil to help local governments improve their recycling systems. Barbara Rosenberg, BMA - Barbosa, Müssnich, Aragão A reference in antitrust law, Rosenberg has been involved in some of Brazil s most complex competition cases, while maintaining a work-life balance that is aspirational to the younger generation. Barbara knows how to be available to clients, solve our problems, and contribute to the partnership and, at the same time, make sure this does not sacrifice her family life, says one voter. Raquel Stein, Carvalho, Machado e Timm Advogados Stein has been championing diversity in the city of Porto Alegre. She became the first female partner of her firm in 2010 and now sits on its board. Stein draws on her own experiences to create support for others; she was the first lawyer to take maternity leave at Carvalho Machado and implemented a policy on the back of it. She is also a great advocate of mentoring female lawyers.

3 Luciana Tornovsky, Demarest Advogados Tornovsky combines her M&A practice with coordinating Demarest s pro bono and social responsibility initiative. Harvard-educated Tornovsky received a high volume of nominations, with people coming forward to praise her leadership, work-life balance, M&A skills and social conscience. She stands for the women at the firm and works for them to be recognised, says one. Maria Elisa Verri, TozziniFreire Advogados Verri sits on the management committee of one of Brazil s largest firms. She has leveraged her leadership role to raise awareness of the value of gender diversity at her firm and shared best practices with other firms in the region, such as Galicia Abogados in Mexico. Voters single out Verri s visionary leadership skills and mentoring of the younger generation. CHILE Lorena Pavic, Carey Competition partner Pavic works on high-profile antitrust cases in Chile and is noted for her leadership and organisation skills. She takes time to develop her young associates and has exacting high standards. Pavic has also played a key role in launching a landmark mentoring initiative in Chile and works with the leadership of her law firm, Carey, to develop ways of supporting young female lawyers. Nicole Nehme, FerradaNehme In a country where examples of women at the top of the legal profession are few and far between, Nehme stands out for having co-founded her own firm over 15 years ago. Not only has she built a successful firm of 40 lawyers, Nehme also has a top-notch competition law practice that sees her work on Chile s landmark contentious and non-contentious antitrust cases. ECUADOR Sandra Reed, Pérez Bustamante & Ponce Abogados When Reed was made partner at the age of 25, her first client was Citibank. She has gone on to work for similarly high-profile clients in the field of infrastructure and project finance,

4 assisting in the privatisation of Ecuador s telecoms and electricity industries. She is nominated for her sharp legal skills, hard work and understanding of clients business, as well as being brilliant and generous. GUATEMALA Ruby Asturias, Pacheco Coto (Guatemala) Ruby is a natural leader among female lawyers in Latin America, says one nominator. Asturias has a clear view of the value women bring to the legal profession and believes demonstrating those skills is key to changing perceptions: women should leverage their unique assets to ask their law firm for support to balance their responsibilities at home and the work place. MEXICO Gabriela Alvarez-Avila, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle SC Alvarez-Avila has made a name for herself in the challenging world of international arbitration, as well as being one of the few female partners in Mexican law firms. Alongside representing governments in their investment treaty disputes, she also acts as a mentor to younger female lawyers. Gabriela is my only female role model in my area of practice and she has had an enormous influence on my career, says one voter. Valeria Chapa, Honeywell A game changer for women in the Mexican legal profession, Chapa is the driving force behind Abogadas MX, an NGO aimed at tackling the low representation of women in the partnerships of law firms that won Latin Lawyer s most recent Diversity Initiative of the Year Award. Chapa is helping firms in Mexico to understand the business costs of failing to retain female lawyers. Cristina Massa, González Calvillo, SC Massa has already chalked up a few important firsts in her career. The ex-cleary lawyer was the first female commissioner at the Mexican competition commission and is one of the few women to act as a senior advisor to the president s chief of staff. More recently, she became partner-elect at González Calvillo, where she will be the first woman to join the partnership in 2017.

5 PANAMA Gisela Porras, formerly Arias & Muñoz (Panama), now part of a panel on transparency Until recently, Porras was the managing partner of Arias & Muñoz in Panama. As former Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Panama, her strong connections were singled out. She has since been selected to join an international panel charged with looking into the country s legal and financial practices in the wake of the Panama Papers. A true rock star, says one voter, who points to Porras support of female entrepreneurs looking to start businesses. PERU Liliana Espinosa, Estudio Echecopar member firm of Baker & McKenzie International Espinosa has been appointed head of Baker & McKenzie s regional M&A practice a core area for the firm across Latin America. She is also on the executive committee in the Lima office and is the first woman to enter the firm s management level in Peru. Liliana is an exemplary, hard-working lawyer who was a trailblazer at her firm, reaching firm leadership at a time it was unheard of for a woman, and at the same time she is genuine, funny and a pleasure to work with! URUGUAY Verónica Raffo, Ferrere (Uruguay) Raffo sits on Ferrere s local and regional leadership committees. She also holds senior roles in various local and international associations promoting women in business and was recently recognised for her achievements by Uruguay s El Observador newspaper. She is currently organising an event that will provide training for female lawyers on law firm management. VENEZUELA María Eugenia Reyes, Baker & McKenzie (Venezuela) Reyes provides younger lawyers with inspiration thanks to her ability to balance a career with family life. Voters came forward to praise her values, mentoring of lawyers and commitment to the firm s social responsibility. For young attorneys like myself, María Eugenia represents

6 a role model in the office because she is evidence of how women can stand out in their career and still be able to achieve their family-oriented goals, says one lawyer. Methodology The list is based on votes from readers of Latin Lawyer. We allowed for one lawyer per firm. Lawyers who received the highest number of votes and strongest nominations appear.
