4 CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE FY 2014/15 was a milestone year for us. Lions Befrienders celebrated 20 years of friendship and care to the seniors, and marked the occasion during our annual Appreciation and Awards presentation event in October. Without the hard work, dedication and commitment of all the Lions, volunteers, staff, partners, organisations and individuals, the Association would not have come this far. We are grateful to everyone for the good work that you have done over the years. With the continued support of all those who have been with us throughout the years, we are confident that the Association will do even better, as we further expand our services to better meet the socioemotional needs of the ageing seniors, many of whom are pioneers who have contributed to nation-building. NEW DEVELOPMENTS In FY2014/15, we were appointed by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) as one of the Cluster Operators to run Senior Cluster Networks (SCNs) in three zones, namely Queenstown (August 2014), Tampines/Changi (January 2015), and Clementi/Bukit Timah (May 2015), where we are already operating Senior Activity Centres (Rental) [SAC (R)] and SACs (Cluster Support) [SAC (CS)]. The three key services within the SCN are SAC (R), SAC (CS) and Senior Group Home (SGH). The SCN concept was introduced to provide a continuum of integrated localised services to support vulnerable seniors. It will focus on maintaining seniors self-care abilities and building neighbours capability for mutual support. Our key role as a Cluster Operator is to facilitate the integration and provision of services available within the SCN. FINANCIAL POSITION AND FUNDRAISING LB s financial position remains strong. Income received from various sources such as fundraising activities and grants totalled $5.59 million, while expenditure totalled $4.52 million, resulting in a surplus of $1.07 million. At the end of the financial year, our accumulated fund was $7.45 million, which is equivalent to 1.65 years of reserves. PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS The Elderly Monitoring System (EMS), our collaborative effort with Ngee Ann Polytechnic and The New Paper, was being progressively rolled out and installed in the homes of our seniors living alone. We also partnered with Singtel, who supported this initiative by sponsoring 500 units of mobile and data SIM cards for the SMS-based system. We are immensely grateful to all our donors and friends who have supported the initiative so generously. We are also happy that our partnership with ComfortDelGro continues to stay strong since the launch of the Home Improvement Programme (HIP) in With the HIP fund, we have been able to purchase essential household items for more than 500 seniors. In addition, the 4
5 ANNUAL REPORT 2014/2015 ComfortDelGro staff have also brought the seniors for outings, as well as raised funds for our programmes. For that, we are extremely grateful. REACHING OUT TO MORE SENIORS AND VOLUNTEERS To reach out to more seniors who may be at risk of social isolation, our staff and volunteers increased the frequency of door-to-door visits outside office hours. We also organised outreach events at HDB void decks to encourage seniors to take part in activities and interviewed them to assess their suitability for our services. In addition, we worked closely with community partners that refer potential seniors to us. These efforts helped us to increase the number of beneficiaries under our programmes. As a result, we had to step up our vounteer recruitment efforts to attract more volunteers. To encourage potential volunteers to join us as befrienders, we organised experiential home visits in such areas as Henderson to give them hands-on experience in befriending. Our radio campaign in January on UFM100.3 s Ushine programme also helped us reach out to new befrienders. At the same time, these recruitment activites allowed us to also recruit Caring Assistance from Neighbours (CAN) volunteers for our Cluster Support programme. During the year, we organised several events to show our appreciation to the volunteers for their service commitment, including movie screenings, tea sessions and our annual Appreciation & Awards Night. In addition, we also continued to improve our support for our volunteers, including the review of the Lions Befrienders Volunteering 101 guidebook. IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE LIONS The Lions Clubs in Singapore continued to play an increasingly important role in the running of the programmes, as we transit into a new service model under the cluster operator scheme. They continue to untiringly provide support at the management committee and SAC board levels, as well as carry out service projects regularly and participate in fund raising programmes for the Lions Befrienders. We look forward to the support of the 80 clubs in the new financial year. RECOGNISING THE PIONEERS To empower seniors to age-in-place as valued members of the community is a constant work in progress. As Singapore celebrates her 50th year of independence this year, we continue in our efforts to reach out to touch the lives of the pioneers in Singapore; and we invite more Lions, friends and volunteers to join us as we work toward our vision of building a nation where every senior is active, healthy and happy! Thank you. - Lion Richard Koong Picture on the right: UFM100.3 deejays and volunteers taking a selfie with our senior at the experiential home visit.

16 PARTNERING THE COMMUNITY TO COMBAT LONELINESS AND IMPROVE SENIORS LIVES BEFRIENDING IS MORE THAN HOME VISITS Recipient of Lions Befrienders Befriender of the Year Award 2014 Mr Lee Thian Pau (left in photo) shares one of his befriending stories. Befriending is more than home visits. Sometimes, it can even save lives. On one of Mr Lee Thian Pau s regular home visit to his befriendee, he knocked the door to find no response. Mr Lee noted that the meal delivery service had placed the senior s packed lunch at the door. As the food was still at the door, this indicated that the senior had not stepped out of the house. Concerned, Mr Lee checked on him again the next morning, but found the same packet of food at the door. Mr Lee thought that his befriendee could have been very tired and was perhaps still asleep. Undeterred, Mr Lee made a third trip to his residence that night. Sensing something amiss with the senior s disappearance, he alerted the befriender executive in charge. The police were called in to investigate. They found that the senior had fallen in the toilet and was severely dehydrated. Thanks to Mr Lee s keen observation and persistence, a life was saved in the nick of time. The value of weekly home visits cannot be overstated, and forms the basis of the befrienders work in building a meaningful relationship with the seniors. 16
17 ANNUAL REPORT 2014/2015 GOING BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY OF A CENTRE VOLUNTEER SAC Volunteer of the Year 2014, Mdm Tay Soon Cheh (photo: 6th from left) seems to be everywhere. Mdm Tay Soon Cheh is a shining example of what volunteerism is about. Rain or shine, she is at the Bendemeer Senior Activity Centre (SAC) where she helps out almost five days in a row, or at organised events bringing seniors out. Mdm Tay also willingly travels across the island to other SACs wherever she may be needed, and has served at Mei Ling SAC and Tampines SAC as well. Indeed, her steadfast commitment and rapport with seniors has been invaluable. On many occasions, Mdm Tay had patiently coaxed seniors to join the SAC activities. Numerous seniors had shared their reservations about going to the SAC because they did not know anyone there. Mdm Tay helped them overcome their reservations by visiting them at their homes to build a relationship with them. Over time, the seniors saw her sincerity and began to take part in the SAC activities. Many seniors have benefited because of Mdm Tay s efforts, and are now more engaged in the community. They have also found comfort in the company of fellow peers, staff and volunteers at the SAC. Beyond helping out with activities at the centre, she goes the extra mile to help seniors run errands. She is also in touch with them through phone calls and home visits. Mdm Tay readily shares her knowledge of the seniors with newer volunteers, and helps to make the SAC a comfortable second home for the seniors. VISIONARY CORPORATE SERVICE RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) INITIATIVES Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Gleneagles Hospital Singapore were awarded the Distinguished Friend of Lions Befrienders at our annual Appreciation and Awards Presentation 2014 for their exemplary contributions toward the seniors well-being. Sponsored by Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund, the Life Renewed Project at Mount Elizabeth Hospital performed cataract surgery on 43 of our needy beneficiaries, restoring the clarity of sight to 64 eyes in total. In addition to the cost of the procedure, the sponsorship included surgeon fees, pre- and post-consultation fees, hospitalization fees and medications. As part of Gleneagles Hospital s Strength for Life women s health campaign which aims to encourage women to take greater care of their health, Gleneagles embarked on a corporate social responsibility initiative to provide complimentary cataract surgery to 17 of our needy female beneficiaries from the Pioneer Generation. Sponsored by Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund for Life Renewed, the sponsorship covered the cost of the procedure, surgeons fees, pre- and post-consultation charges, hospitalisation fees and medications. 17
