We are thrilled to welcome civic, national and international speakers to discuss creatively building community. as citizens in the twenty-first century, we need to embrace ways of including the imaginative arts, diverse ideas and various cultures into our civic lives. all of our distinguished keynote and public affairs speakers will suggest the possibilities. at each meeting, members of Madison Civics Club have the opportunity to question the keynote speakers. throughout the luncheon please engage in discussions with your table companions. Madison Civics Club is honored to continue the fine tradition of providing financial Youth grants to recognize individual and student organizations that are engaged in activities that enrich our community. finally, the Madison Civics Club offers the opportunity to enhance our lives through this educational and entertaining luncheon series. 4 K EYNOtE SPEa KErS Mimi Gardner Gates Jonathan Overby Mimi Internationally renowned Asian art historian, author, lecturer, curator, philanthropist, and civic-minded Director Emerita of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), Mimi Gardner Gates changed the face of Seattle, envisioning and oveseeing the expansion of the Seattle Art Museum on First Avenue, the renovation of the Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park, the creation of the Olympic Sculpture Park on Puget Sound and the establishment of a conservation studio. Her vision for the role of the Northwest s largest museum in Seattle s civic life has made a lasting contribution to the vibrancy of the community and built bridges among its diverse cultures. Dr. Gates earned a Ph.D. in History of Art from Yale University, a Masters in Oriental and Chinese Studies from the University of Iowa and a B.A. cum laude in Asian History from Stanford. Some of her many honors include fellowships from the Asian Art Council, National Endowment for the Arts, the American Oriental Society, the Ford Foundation and the Social Science Research Council. While serving as the director of the SAM, Dr. Gates also served as a Yale Corporation Fellow, on the Board of Directors of the Northwest African American Museum, on the National Endowment of the Arts Indemnity Panel, and President and Trustee for the Association of Art Museum Directors. Jonathan As an ethnomusicologist, baritone, lecturer, producer, director, host and distinguished broadcaster, Jonathan Overby wears many hats to investigate the world of music and its impact on humankind. As executive producer and host of Wisconsin Public Radio s Higher Ground, Dr. Overby s program explores world music with African roots and more. According to Dr. Overby, his extensive travel has helped him to research sacred world music to better understand the human condition and the potential for building bridges between diverse groups while illuminating and celebrating cultural diversity and the inclusion of marginalized groups. Dr. Overby earned a Doctorate in Administrative Leadership in Higher Education from Edgewood College, where he is currently a member of the doctoral faculty. Overby has a Post Doctoral Fellowship from Edgewood to advance his research on sacred world music. In April, Dr. Overby was elevated to the status of Chief in the Wameru tribe of Arusha in Tanzania.

5 Rebecca Blank Rebecca Dr. Blank has led Wisconsin s flagship university since Her appointment as UW Madison s Chancellor followed four years serving in top positions at the U.S. Department of Commerce, including Acting Secretary of the agency. Chancellor Blank distinguished herself by her efforts to connect research and innovation with job creation and economic growth. Prior to her time at the Department of Commerce, Chancellor Blank had served as dean and professor of public policy and economics in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan; as a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington; as a member of the faculties at Northwestern University and Princeton University, and as a member of the President s Council of Economic Advisers. Dr. Blank earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her B.S. in Economics, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota. Jessica Fellowes Jessica Journalist, public speaker and author of the companion books to PBS s Downton Abbey, Jessica Fellowes has researched the real life inspirations for the show. She has documented the issues of the period and historical figures including characters from her own family, as niece of the Downton Abbey creator and scriptwriter, Julian Fellowes. Jessica Fellowes is best known for her work as author of three official companion books for the popular Masterpiece production: A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey (2014), The Chronicles of Downton Abbey (2012) and The World of Downton Abbey (2011). Her books have reached the bestseller lists for The Sunday Times, New York Times and The Globe & Mail (Canada). She has also made numerous appearances on radio and television, as well as co-hosted a Downton special for BBC Radio Oxford.

Each luncheon meeting features a keynote address preceded by a brief public affairs talk by a local speaker on a topic connected to the keynote presentation. In accordance with our nonprofit status, the Madison Civics Club provides generous grants at each luncheon meeting to outstanding youth-led projects that benefit the wider community. these Youth grants are funded by contributions from community organizations, member donations and other fundraising efforts. Madison Civics Club is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Your contribution over the cost of the Regular Membership fee is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
