Len Alexander Diane Frankel Gregory Kandel Louise Kane David Mallette Linda Sweet Christy Wall Background Job Profile Director of Development La Jolla Playhouse La Jolla, California La Jolla Playhouse is recognized as one of our nation s most important theatres, renowned for its high standards of production; the quality and extent of its development of new work; an innovative and free spirited approach to productions; a broad-based aesthetic; and its ongoing success in having productions transfer to not-for-profit and commercial venues. The Playhouse has received more than 300 awards for theatre excellence, including the 1993 Tony Award as America's Outstanding Regional Theatre. La Jolla Playhouse is nationally acclaimed for its innovative productions of classics, new plays and musicals. Now led by Artistic Director Christopher Ashley and Managing Director Michael S. Rosenberg, the Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer. Scores of Playhouse productions have moved to Broadway, garnering a total of 31 Tony Awards, including Big River, The Who's Tommy, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, A Walk in the Woods, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Dracula, Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning I Am My Own Wife, fostered as part of the Playhouse's Page To Stage New Play Development Program. Currently the Tony Award-winning Jersey Boys, the smash hit musical and world-wide phenomenon about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, is running on Broadway, and Memphis, the exuberant theatrical event that combines the splendor of Broadway with the roots of rock and roll and which won the Tony for Best Musical in 2010, is on a national tour. The Playhouse commissioned musical Hands on a Hardbody will join Jersey Boys on Broadway in February of Located in the San Diego coastal suburb of La Jolla, the Playhouse is an independent organization situated on the University of California San Diego (UCSD) campus. The Playhouse operates in four venues: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, a 492 seat proscenium arch theatre; the 400 seat thrust stage Mandell Weiss Forum; the Theodore and Adele Shank Theatre, a 98-seat 65 HIGH RIDGE ROAD #128 STAMFORD,, CT FAX Specializing in Executive Search, Planning and Organizational Analysis
2 theatre adjacent to the Mandell Weiss Forum; and the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center, which opened in 2005 as the centerpiece of a permanent, year-round theatre village designed to create a dynamic synergy between theatre artists and theatergoers and to support the expansion of the Playhouse's acclaimed education and outreach programs. The Jacobs Center serves as a community center where artists, audiences and UCSD students, staff and faculty interact and share creative resources. It includes the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, a state of the art flexible theatre space seating up to 450 people, as well as state-of-the-art offices for Playhouse staff and a restaurant, bar and central courtyard. In 2010 the Playhouse launched an exciting new program that takes theatre off the stage and on the road - Without Walls (WoW). Supported by a generous grant from The James Irvine Foundation, WoW places cutting edge, site-specific theatre directly in the San Diego community, bringing acclaimed national and international theatre artists to share their groundbreaking work with San Diego, as well as commissioning original theatre pieces that will be inspired by local neighborhoods. Building on the excitement and success of its first three WoW productions Susurrus, The Car Plays: San Diego, and Sam Bendrix at the Bon Soir the Playhouse will host a WoW Festival in October, 2013, featuring several site-based pieces by artists and companies from around the world. In addition to its productions, the Playhouse offers extensive education and outreach programs that directly impact some 40,000 children and adults each year, including a major program that each year tours a commissioned new play to the schools. The Playhouse has a full-time staff of 60, nearly 1,100 volunteers, and more than 10,000 subscribers. The theatre is governed by a board of about 50 business, civic and social leaders representing the diverse La Jolla and San Diego community, and has an annual operating budget of approximately $14.5 million. The fund raising goal for is $4.9 million. The local audience draw is from the greater San Diego region which has a rich cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic landscape, including a demographic of 35 per cent Caucasian, 20 per cent Hispanic, 20 per cent Asian/Pacific Islander, and 15 per cent African American. For more information about the theatre, please visit Position and Responsibilities The Director of Development plays an active role in donor cultivation and solicitation. The position reports jointly to the Managing Director and the Artistic Director and also works closely with the Board and other theatre staff. The Director of Development supervises a full-time staff of 8, including: Associate Director of Development, Corporate Relations; Associate Director of Development, Government & Foundation Relations; Associate Director of Development, Individual Giving; Special Events Manager; Development Associate, Individual Giving; Special Events Coordinator; Development Coordinator; Assistant to the Director of Development and Board Liaison; as well as a part-time Institutional Giving Assistant. 2
3 The Playhouse is currently planning a $50 million endowment campaign, with the quiet phase slated to begin at the end of The Director of Development will play a key role in the campaign. The Director of Development will: 1. With the senior leadership of the theatre, establish and execute a strategic and comprehensive development plan that will support the operating needs of the theatre for the present and the long term. 2. Aggressively lead and direct the organization and implementation of the theatre s fundraising from individual, foundation, corporate and government sources. Key initiatives include: increased identification and cultivation of individual and corporate donors, with particular focus on expanding the pool of major gift prospects and identifying and cultivating the next generation of donors; participation in the upcoming endowment campaign; and the development of a planned giving program. 3. Work with the theatre s senior leadership to motivate and strengthen the Board in its role in development; expand, manage and coordinate the trustees and other volunteers involvement in fundraising activities; take an active role in serving and supporting the Board and Board committees. 4. Work closely with staff, trustees, and other volunteers to maximize the effectiveness of the theatre s diverse special events, which range from small cultivation dinners and opening night parties to the big annual gala, in order to help develop, attract, and retain donors. 5. Foster ongoing, collegial relations among the development department and other departments of the organization and work to better integrate fundraising into the culture of the Playhouse. 6. Build, train, mentor, and supervise an effective, professional, diverse development team and support staff, and recruit and replace as necessary, in consultation with the theatre s senior leadership. 7. Supervise and manage the research and preparation of all foundation, corporate and government grant proposals, and oversee grant administration and reporting. 8. Manage and oversee the formation and maintenance of necessary development reports and records; prepare and manage the department's financial reports and budget; monitor budget and control expenditures. 3
4 Qualifications The successful candidate will: 1. Have a background in the cultivation and solicitation of individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors, with proven ability to develop, solicit, and steward leadership gifts, and a demonstrated track record in the management of successful development programs, including staff and volunteer management. 2. Be a strong leader with effective operational and strategic management skills, demonstrated experience managing, mentoring and motivating a multi-person department, and the ability to inspire those working with him/her toward accomplishing common objectives. 3. Be very well-organized, able to plan strategically, set priorities and focus on details while not losing sight of the big picture, with the flexibility to welcome and embrace change, and the ability to balance the many challenges inherent in an active and lively theatre environment. 4. Be a personable, mature, and diplomatic individual, who works effectively with trustees, donors, volunteers and inside staff and is comfortable dealing with people of wealth, and who relishes taking an active, public role in the cultivation and solicitation of donors, and as a representative of the Playhouse. 5. Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of non-profit accounting and financial principles. Experience with integrated database systems and fluency in Tessitura a plus. 6. Be someone with initiative, creativity, nimbleness, and energy, who enjoys working as a team player but also has the capability to work independently and as a self-starter. 7. Have a genuine interest in theatre and the arts in general, understand and support the theatre s mission and appreciate the important role cultural institutions play in the life of a vibrant community, and have the ability to articulate this mission and role to others. 8. Have, at minimum, a Baccalaureate degree, though a Master s degree and CFRE is preferred, and at least seven to 10 years of development experience, with prior experience in capital/endowment campaigns preferred.
