2 FROM Inequality Equality TO Policies and Programs that Work New York City faces huge challenges relating to extreme differentials in access to affordable health care, quality public education, affordable housing and jobs that provide a living wage. The distribution of income and wealth has become more polarized as the continually restructuring economy shrinks the middle and working classes, resulting in a reduction of the consumer spending power that is a major driver of economic growth. To correct for the economic and social deficits that feed inequality, carefully calibrated policies and programs must be embraced by government, nonprofit service providers and the private sector to create a city in which all New Yorkers can thrive. This conference will address public initiatives and model programs that advance economic, gender, and racial equality. We will examine key problems of availability, affordability and access in four critical areas: health care, education, housing and employment. We will explore the interconnectedness of public policies, private programs and community engagement in shrinking the scale and scope of disparity in our city. It will be a unique opportunity to strengthen current relationships, create new alliances and move a progressive agenda forward.
