1 St. Pius X Catholic High School Annual Report

2 Our Mission... St. Pius X, an archdiocesan high school, provides a college preparatory education for the formation of the mind, body and spirit of each student in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Annual Report has been prepared by the Development Office for the supporters of St. Pius X Catholic High School. Every attempt was made to ensure accuracy in this publication. If you find any inaccuracies or omissions, please accept our apology. Contact the Development Office with any corrections. We would like to extend a special thank you to Peachtree Portraits, Billy Howard, and the numerous students, parents, faculty, and staff who submitted photos for this publication.

3 Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of St. Pius X: It is with tremendous gratitude and great pleasure that I present to you the Annual Report. This report highlights one of the most successful years in the proud fifty-five year history of St. Pius X Catholic High School in all phases of our operation. It validates once again how blessed we are to be associated with a school dedicated to our Catholic faith and a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. A Letter from the Principal These blessings, illuminated by the comprehensive effort of the entire St. Pius X family, resulted in many outstanding achievements throughout the year. The attainment of record setting academic performance data, the production of a memorable set of fine arts performances, and the recognition of our athletic program as the third best in the nation confirms our longstanding commitment of producing young men and women sound in their faith, their character, and their bodies. Your kindness and generosity toward this wonderful school also led to another record by exceeding the challenge grant established by an anonymous donor. This donor challenged our parent community to meet an 80 percent participation level of giving to our Annual Fund, a level that we have not previously attained. As you well know, the Annual Fund is a priority as it allows us to meet our budget each year, a necessity when tuition only covers about 90 percent of operational costs. Challenged, our families came together in such a collective effort that it resulted in us not only achieving that goal, but exceeding it while obtaining an 85 percent rate of giving to the campaign. I hope that everyone in the St. Pius X family is proud of this wonderful accomplishment. These kind gifts allow us to continue to support our students and teachers by providing them with the resources they need to be successful and to take St. Pius X to new levels of excellence. As the leader of this school and on behalf of our faculty and students, I thank you for your kindness. I have great pride in the St. Pius X community for always living our motto of Faith, Family, and Futures: Pius Pride for Life. We continue looking to the future and are constantly seeking ways to elevate this exceptional Catholic, college preparatory school to new levels of excellence. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you for continuing to include St. Pius X in your financial plans. I hold a special place in my prayers for the many blessings you continue to bestow upon this wonderful school. 8 08 Year in Retrospect In September 2012, the Flannery O Connor Library began offering digital downloads to the St. Pius X community. Students, faculty, and staff were able to download books and audiobooks directly to their personal ereaders, computers, or smart devices through the Overdrive system. Theology teacher Ms. Theresa Johnson joined 17 participants from the United States to complete the Bearing Witness Advanced Program culminating in a trip to Israel. The program, which is sponsored by the Anti- Defamation League as well as the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, is a professional development opportunity for Catholic school educators in the United States. The group visited sites Year in Retrospect... sacred to Jews and Christians such as the Old City of Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Dead Sea, and the Sea of Galilee. St. Pius X hosted the fourth annual Claws for a Cause volleyball event in September. At this match, the St. Pius X and Marist School volleyball teams work together to raise money for different charity programs. This year, as host, St. Pius X selected the Save-A-Limb fund, which is run by alumnus Dr. Shawn Standard 87. On September 21, 2012 the St. Pius X Home and School Association welcomed acclaimed motivational speaker Mr. Kyle Maynard, who presented No Excuses to the students and faculty. Maynard, born a congenital amputee, addressed students about his struggles and perseverance in life in a captivating and engaging presentation. St. Pius X was proud to announce the participation of seven finalists in the National Merit Program, Phineas Andrews, Mary Hildreth, Claire Homrich, Barbara Anne Kozee, Catherine O Neill, Keefe Osment, and Amalia Pedersen. In addition, Aneek James was named in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, and seven other students were named National Hispanic Scholars, Jessica Aponte, Alexandra Barton, Alicia Guyton, Stephen Landry, Kassandra Solsrud, Emilia Suarez, and John Weber. Head football coach Paul Standard 80 recorded his 100th career win on September 28, 2012 at the Homecoming game against Towers High School. Coach Standard s record at the helm of the football program at press time was Rachel Ponce de Leon 12 won top recognition on the 2012 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing program. Her submission was evaluated by one high school teacher and one college English teacher. Ponce de Leon was one of four Georgians selected for the award and has received a certificate of accomplishment. This honor has been received by only 37 St. Pius X students since Students of Mr. Killebrew Bailey s Marine Biology class took their annual trip to Dauphin Island, Alabama for hands-on experiences in the field. According to Mr. Bailey, You cannot truly appreciate the subject without doing some field work at the coast. Upon their return, students turned in a full lab writeup of their experience. Members of the Class of 2016 became the first class at St. Pius X to receive Nexus 10 Android tablets to use on a daily basis at school. A generous donor and supporter of St. Pius X offered teachers this wonderful opportunity to bolster the use of technology in the curriculum. The pilot program was led by a volunteer group of faculty who worked to incorporate the new tablets into their teaching, expanding resources through a variety of channels, including video lessons, audio lessons, work books, and collaborative exercises. For the sixth consecutive year, the Mothers Club sponsored the Dresden Christmas Project. This year, the program was expanded to include a complementary project for CHRIS Kids. The St. Pius X community collected gifts and decorations for Dresden families and CHRIS Kids, and hosted decorating parties which brightened the holidays for those in need. In January 2013, the Lion Leader Program was designated as a Certified Peer Program by the National Association of Peer Program Professionals. St. Pius X became the first private school in Georgia and just the second Catholic school in the United States to receive the title. The program, in its seventh year, was founded to establish a positive high school experience for incoming students. The Mothers Club was proud to welcome Ms. Lauren Winborne of SteerSmart to St. Pius X in January. Ms. Winborne offered a compelling

9 presentation aimed at educating parents and students about safe teen driving. Mothers Club also teamed up with Home and School to present a special assembly led by FBI Special Agent Keith Kabrhel discussing internet safety. their artwork (3D design, ceramics, mixed media, 2D design, photography, painting, and drawing) earlier in the year. The Best in Show ribbon was awarded to senior Collette Brunner for her piece entitled Egg. Monsignor Richard Lopez hosted the 22nd annual Dad s Morning of Recollection. Each year, fathers are invited to this event to discuss the special privilege and challenge of fatherhood, work, and faith. After Mass, the group reflected on the theme of the year, Preparing Our Kids for Eternity. Msgr. Lopez challenged the fathers to learn how to become better parents, husbands, and spiritual leaders by incorporating laughter, prayer, fellowship, and Scripture readings. Sophomores Emily Brady and Anna Kelly participated in the 2013 American High School Honors Performance Series in New York. The girls spent five days working with renowned music conductors, rehearsing with other finalists from around the world, and finally performing on stage at Carnegie Hall. The Ninth Annual Juried Visual Arts Exhibition was held in February and was judged by Erin Dixon, Rich Gere, and Linda MacArthur. Students submitted In March 2013, St. Pius X hosted its spring blood drive in honor of English teacher Mr. Matt McIntyre, who is currently fighting a difficult battle against cancer. The school received an overwhelming amount of support, with 252 members of the community stepping up to give blood. The American Red Cross was able to collect a school record of 204 units of blood. This was the fifth largest donation amount collected among Catholic high schools in the United States. Four St. Pius X students were selected to participate in the Governor s Honors Summer Program. Josh Chatfield was selected to represent the school for mathematics, Ana Haynes for visual arts, and Grace Obiofuma and Lydia Pedersen for communicative arts. The students were selected from a pool of nearly 3,000 students across the state. Seniors Matt Angulo and John Weber successfully qualified for the national debate tournament after discussing the topic of China. The duo became one of only four Georgia partnerships to qualify for the tournament. The team is led by Mr. Sean Hiland. Senior Keefe Osment and sophomore Joey Kilpatrick joined 300,000 students nationwide who qualified to take the American Mathematics Competition. Both students scored within the top percentile, allowing them the opportunity to join elite students around the nation in taking the American Invitational Mathematics Exam; a three-hour, 15 question test. The mission trip program was expanded to include three trips over spring break, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and Washington, DC. Students raised money through two major fundraisers, the Spaghetti Dinner and Rock the Mission. In April, the missionaries traveled to assist in farming, building, and teaching projects. The Pius Players held another outstanding season, beginning with their performance of Neil Simon s Fools. In November, the actors put on an unforgettable performance of Charlie Brown s Special Christmas for their younger audience. The group enthralled audiences with their sold out musical performances of Disney s Beauty and the Beast featuring senior Alicia Guyton as Belle and junior Henry Young as the Beast. Each year, nearly 100,000 students are selected by their teachers to participate in the National French Contest. Despite the fierce competition, sophomore Catherine Corwin, a French II student, year in retrospect

10 10 achieved high distinction and was awarded a Gold Medal. In addition, students taking the National Latin Exam set a school record, bringing home over 100 awards and 19 gold medals. Monsignor Richard Lopez celebrated the 40th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood on April 28. Msgr. Lopez was recognized at an all school Mass that same month where he was presented with an all-expense paid trip to Rome from the St. Pius X community and the Cathedral of Christ the King. The Marching Golden Lions moved up to Class AAA and placed first at the West Forsyth competition. The group took best overall in the Silver Division, while the drum line placed second in the competition. The marching band has been led by Mr. Chad Paetznick since The fine arts department had a very successful year, selling out all three dance performances, the Christmas Concert, and several plays. Students worked hard and displayed their many God-given talents. The St. Pius X Golden Lions experienced another successful year with six region titles, three state runner-up titles (football, volleyball, boys tennis), and seven state championship titles (boys and girls cross country, water polo, girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, boys track and field). Early in the school year, the Development Office was approached by a generous donor to challenge the parent community to achieve a minimum of 80 percent participation in exchange for a $100,000 gift to the school. The parent community met this challenge with flying colors, reaching a record breaking 85 percent participation. The biggest fundraiser of the year was an overwhelming success, raising over $700,000 for the school. St. Pius X was awarded the 2013 Georgia Athletic Directors Association Regions Director s Cup for the fourth time in the last five years. This prestigious award is given annually to the top athletic programs in the state in each classification. In addition, St. Pius X was recognized as having the third best athletic program in the nation in the MaxPreps Cup national rankings. This award caps off one of the most successful athletic years in school history. The Alumni Association sponsored three events, Trivia Night at SPX, The Finish Lion 5k and Family Fun Run, and The George B. Maloof Golf & Tennis Classic and was able to raise over $20,000 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Over 300 participants came out to support the programs. Junior Asia Durr was named the Most Valuable Player at the FIBA Americas Cup Tournament in June as the United States U16 Women s Basketball Team captured the gold medal by defeating Canada in Cancun, Mexico. Durr took AAA girls basketball state player of the year awards from three different organizations and led the Golden Lions to the AAA state championship and a 30-3 record. Two-hundred and forty-two members from the Class of 2013 graduated on May 18 at the Cobb Energy Centre, becoming the 55th graduating class of St. Pius X. Principal Steve Spellman, valedictorian David Spratte and salutatorian Barbara Anne Kozee addressed the group, reminiscing on their successful years. Father Bryan Small joined the faculty on stage as he was honored as the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus. Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory distributed diplomas and proudly presented his annual Archbishop s Award to Lauren Massey and Frank Martin.

36 36 Scholarships Newly established scholarships... The following scholarship awards were either newly established or newly endowed in the past year. We thank those St. Pius X supporters who through their generosity made these scholarships possible. BRAD GAY 07 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The memorial scholarship for Brad Gay 07 was established in December 2012 by his family, following his tragic and untimely death a few months prior. This scholarship honors the memory of Brad, a four year member of the football team, known for his personal qualities of kindness and quiet confidence. He was also known as a dedicated teammate and a very loyal friend. Inspired by desire and determination, he made himself into an outstanding young man both in the classroom and on the gridiron. Gerry and Mary Gay OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION - KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP Established in March 2013, this funded scholarship is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council from Our Lady of the Assumption parish.
