1 Biography 1 Eleanor Roosevelt Occupation: First Lady Born: October 11, 1884 in New York City, New York Died: November 7, 1962 in New York City, New York Best known for: Being an active first lady who worked for human rights. Interesting Facts about Eleanor Roosevelt She was born Anna Eleanor, but went by her middle name. Franklin asked Eleanor to dance when she was fifteen at a family Christmas party. President Harry Truman once called her the "First Lady of the World". While First Lady she wrote a newspaper column called "My Day" where she told about the daily life in the White House. Eleanor often carried a handgun with her for protection. While touring the south to lecture against segregation, the FBI told her that the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) had put out a $25,000 reward for her assassination. 2 Biography 2 Clara Barton Occupation: Nurse Born: December 25, 1821 in North Oxford, Massachusetts Died: April 12, 1912 in Glen Echo, Maryland Best known for: Founder of the American Red Cross Fun Facts about Clara Barton Clara was giving a soldier a cup of water when he suddenly died. She then noticed a hole in her sleeve from a bullet that narrowly missed her and killed the soldier. After the Civil War, Clara worked to track down missing soldiers. The army had kept little record of lost soldiers. After leaving the Red Cross in her 80s, Clara traveled the country teaching people first-aid skills. There are numerous elementary schools and high schools throughout the country that are named after Clara Barton. She never married nor had children. 3 Biography 3 Sally Ride Occupation: Astronaut Born: May 26, 1951 in Encino, California Died: July 23, 2012 in La Jolla, California Best known for: First American woman in space Interesting Facts about Sally Ride She was married for a time to fellow NASA astronaut Steven Hawley. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Sally wrote a number of science books for children including Mission Planet Earth and Exploring our Solar System. She was the only person to serve on both committees that investigated the Space Shuttle accidents of the Challenger and the Columbia. 4 Biography 4 Sir Edmund Hillary Mount Everest Occupation: Explorer and Mountain Climber Born: July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand Died: January 11, 2008 in Auckland, New Zealand Best known for: First to climb Mount Everest Fun Facts about Sir Edmund Hillary Hikers are often called "trampers" in New Zealand. Sir Edmund was 6 feet 5 inches tall. He was a navigator with the New Zealand Royal Air Force during WWII. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II after reaching the top of Everest. This is why you often see him referred to as "Sir". Mount Everest is 29,029 feet high. It is named after a British general who surveyed India named Sir George Everest. The local name for the mountain is Chomolungma, which means 'Mother Goddess of the Sky'. Edmund wrote several books about his adventures including High Adventure, No Latitude for Error, and The Crossing of Antarctica. 17. What is Edmund Hillary best known for? 18. 5 Biography 5 Daniel Boone Occupation: Pioneer and Explorer Born: October 22, 1734 in the colony of Pennsylvania Died: September 26, 1820 in Missouri Best known for: Exploring and settling the frontier of Kentucky Interesting Facts about Daniel Boone Daniel likely never attended school. He learned to read and write at home. However, he enjoyed reading and often took books with him on the trail. When Daniel was still just fourteen years old, he spotted bear tracks near his father's herd. He tracked the bear down and killed his first bear. Boone's rifle was given the nickname the "Ticklicker" because it was said that he could shoot the tick off of a bear's nose. One of his nicknames was the Great Pathfinder. In 1784 a book was written about Daniel called The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon. It made him a folk hero (even though his last name was spelled wrong). 24. When was Daniel Boone born? 25.
