Carolina CORNERSTONE Winter 2017 Donor Spotlight DOUG AND SHARON ROTHWELL In this Issue: Donor Spotlight: Doug and Sharon Rothwell Upcoming Dates to Remember Student-Athlete Thank You: Destiny DeBerry Former Student-Athlete Spotlight: Karen Greenberg Campaign Priorities 2017 Fall Scholarship Dinner Maximize Your Carolina Athletics Impact Using Blended Gifts by Speed Hallman As Tar Heel expatriates settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Doug and Sharon Rothwell enjoyed living in a university town. It had a nice feel, Doug said. Not too big. Arts, athletics, events, culture, diversity. And for people our age, the youth around town keep you young. The only problem, according to Doug: It was not our university. SUE WALSH Associate Executive Director - Scholarship and Legacy Gifts SUE@RAMSCLUB.COM Their university is UNC. The place where they met on the first day of orientation for master s degree students, and where they married 37 years ago. Sharon grew up in Dunn and earned a bachelor s degree in political science from Carolina. Doug was a Philadelphia native and University of Delaware graduate. Their paths crossed in the School of Government s Master s in Public Administration program. They graduated together in 1980 and left Chapel Hill for careers in business and politics. RAMSCLUB.COM

Sharon served as chief of staff to a governor of Michigan and retired as a vice president of Masco, a global producer of home and building products. Doug was chief of staff for a governor of Delaware and worked for GM and Bank of America. He founded and serves as president and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan, an economic development group. The Rothwells followed Carolina basketball from afar, and Doug joined the School of Government Foundation board. That was the first step for us, Sharon said. We had given some funding, but we said we d really like to do something more significant to help the MPA program. It was suggested that we think about endowing a scholarship. That decision, along with our decision to get involved with the Rams Club, coincided with the time to plan our retirements. We went through all the normal choices, she said. Arizona? No. Florida? No. Finally I said, What about Chapel Hill? Once Sharon mentioned Chapel Hill, it was a no-brainer, Doug said. The quid pro quo was that we had to get basketball tickets. They came back to Chapel Hill three years ago and looked for more ways to engage with UNC. We obviously loved Carolina athletics, so the Rams Club was the next choice, Sharon said. Doug is now serving on the Rams Club Board of Advisors and chairing the UNC Board of Visitors. Sharon is on the Carolina Performing Arts Board, and both are on the Chancellor s Philanthropic Council. Their involvement with Carolina reflects their philosophy that great academics, great arts and great athletics make great college towns. First we decided to give back to the program where our careers started, Doug said, and athletics and the arts make Chapel Hill a great place to live. The university and the town wouldn t be what they are without having the arts and athletics to complement a great academic program. The Rothwells knew that student-athlete support is a top priority for the Rams Club, and they decided to create a volleyball scholarship. We liked the sport, we saw that they had done well, and we thought that, with help, they could do even better in terms of recruiting talent, Sharon said. They endowed the Rothwell Volleyball Scholarship with cash gifts paid over seven years. About a year ago they decided to add to the fund through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) as part of their commitment to The Campaign for Carolina. They received a tax deduction and will receive an income stream for life. After their deaths, the trust assets will be added to their scholarship fund. It s important for folks to know that there are so many ways to give back at different levels, Doug said. You have a lot of options more than just writing a check to allow you to participate in this campaign. A CRUT, for example, provides donors with income and helps the university with long-term needs. Sharon said the staff at the Rams Club and the Office of University Development helped them explore options. They were willing to sit down with us and go through our needs, our interests, our priorities, and help us tailor our giving to fit our personal financial needs and capacity, as well as our interests, Sharon said. They made it simple and explained our options. Their giving is more than an investment in the quality of their retirement life. They are grateful for UNC s impact on their entire lives. We get to wear this brand on our sleeves, Doug said. We have the jobs and the relationships and the ability to root for championship teams. What is the value of UNC s brand on your resume? You realize the benefit you got and continue to get from going here. Our responsibility is to pay it forward for the next generation and help them get that same benefit. I love this university and have since I was a small child, and I feel privileged to have two degrees from here, Sharon said. I m also cognizant of the changing needs of the university, the diminishing public support for the university, and I feel a sense of obligation and responsibility to help it continue to be one of the best public universities in the country -- and be even better. It s more and more up to us alumni to support it and help it be what it can be.

2018 DATES TO REMEMBER TO ME, BEING A TAR HEEL MEANS... challenging myself physically, mentally and intellectually in ways I never thought were possible. It means being the first member of my family to graduate from a four year university, not just any university, but one of the top universities in the country. It means meeting life-long friends that I consider family, and making connections that will help guide me through my career path and life. It means creating memories and gaining experiences of which others could only dream. Being a Tar Heel means being a part of something greater than yourself. It means representing my family, my team, my university and myself with class. Wearing Carolina across my chest is a privilege and honor, one that has allowed me to turn my dreams into reality both on and off the field. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a team that makes my bad days good, and my good days great. To be able to be a student-athlete at the University of National Champions and attending such a prestigious school means the world to me and has been the best decision I have ever made. Thank you Rams Club donors for providing me this opportunity! 4 Former Student-Athlete Spotlight: KAREN GREENBERG I AM A TAR HEEL... A case of abdominal pain, a couple of chest pains and a brain bleed came through Dr. Karen Greenberg s emergency room before she could pause to answer a question about how varsity athletics shaped her life. As it turns out, her time on Jenny Levy s first Carolina women s lacrosse teams served her well. Greenberg, a 1999 UNC graduate, is an osteopathic physician and a specialist in emergency neurological complications, particularly strokes. Now living in her native New Jersey and practicing in Pennsylvania, she s also making a name for herself on the national lecture circuit, speaking to medical groups on acute stroke care and neurologic emergencies. In early November at a conference in Denver, she delivered five lectures in two days to rooms full of 500 physicians. Greenberg is also the first recipient of a Practice Innovation Award recognizing her work with a neurologic emergency department. Greenberg relishes the opportunity to save lives and make a difference for her patients. The beauty and curse of being an ER doctor is you never know what s coming through the doors. You have to be on your toes all the time, she said. It s a very hectic lifestyle, but one I would not trade. In 1994 when Greenberg was looking at colleges, UNC was launching a women s lacrosse team to help meet Title IX requirements for equity in men s and women s sports. Despite also looking at Duke and Vanderbilt, Nothing could compare to the recruiting trip to Carolina she said. I stayed with a couple of field hockey players and saw the camaraderie of the athletes. The campus is unbelievably beautiful, and I knew that was where I wanted to be. A torn ACL injury side-lined Greenberg during her freshman year, but through perseverance and determination she returned to play her sophomore through senior years taking advantage of all the opportunities and lessons athletics provides.

The Tar Heel biology major/chemistry minor and Phi Beta Kappa graduate said the transition from playing four years in Carolina blue to working 12-hour shifts in blue scrubs was not so difficult. An ER doctor has to multitask, and I do think athletics at Carolina prepared me for that, she said. Being a student athlete makes you very regimented and organized. You have class in the morning and practice in the afternoon. You go home and get work done for the next day. There s not a lot of free time. It made me very focused, very driven. I knew what my goals were because I had a limited amount of hours in the day. Among her happiest memories from UNC are going to the Women s Lacrosse Final Four in 1997 and 1998 a spectacular achievement for a new program watching Carolina basketball, spending time on Franklin Street and in the Pit, and making friendships outside of athletics. She also remembers the leap from high school to Division I. The biggest thing is perseverance, she said. Our first run around campus in the fall felt like a three-mile sprint. You think you can t do it anymore, but you re surrounded by teammates and the Carolina motto: We play hard. We play smart. We play together. You find a way. The University s For All Kind campaign kicked off its public phase in October amid great fanfare on campus and the Campaign for Carolina Athletics will be a big part of the $4.25 billion effort. Our goal is to raise $500 million and provide student-athletes opportunities by focusing on the four priorities below. SECURING THE FOUNDATION The cost of providing scholarship opportunities is growing at an unsustainable rate. The primary focus of campaign efforts will be on building the Scholarship Endowment, and securing the foundation of our athletics program. Goal: $200 million BUILDING FOR CHAMPIONS Some of Carolina s most storied programs look to take the next step in pursuit of championships with new facilities currently under construction a Football Practice Complex, a Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium, a Field Hockey Stadium, and a Track & Field Complex. Goal: $115 million MAKING AN IMPACT Donors can make a direct impact on a sports program by giving to an individual sports endowment or a sport s expendable account. Funds from these sources allow our coaches to answer specific needs which may pop up such as travel, recruiting, staffing help, and more. Goal: $65 million GROWING THE TEAM Annual members of The Rams Club provide unrestricted funding that currently supports: scholarships and other expenses and with growth, can provide funding that answers the most pressing needs of the program. Goal: $120 million and 22,000 members For more information on the Campaign for Carolina Athletics, please visit RAMSCLUB.COM.

2017 FALL SCHOLARSHIP DINNER THANK YOU There are very few times you can walk into a room with student-athletes, and not see them in Carolina gear. The Scholarship Dinner is an exception. This past fall, I had the honor and opportunity, along with 250 other student-athletes, to enjoy a night with our donors in the Concourse Club of the Loudermilk Center. Nearly 200 donors enjoyed getting to know their scholarship assignees for the first time or perhaps spent time with them for the last time in the case of the graduating seniors. This night has always been one of my favorites since I first attended the dinner three years ago as an eager freshman. Now in my fourth year representing the Heels, I still find the joy in going. My name is Caroline Baldwin, and I m a senior on the Swimming and Diving team. It is extremely heartening to walk into a room full of strangers, and know that each and every one supports you and is genuinely interested in who you are as a person, not just a student-athlete. For that, I want to say thank you to all Educational Foundation donors. Our time here is limited as student-athletes, but the opportunities you all have made possible for us are limitless. This dinner is the perfect example of what it means to be a part of the Carolina Family. I think I can speak on behalf of all of the student-athletes here that we cannot say thank you enough. You all have helped make our dreams become a reality, and we hope we make you proud in everything we do. Thank you, and Go Heels! Caroline Baldwin UNC Swimming & Diving 18

MAXIMIZE YOUR CAROLINA ATHLETICS IMPACT USING BLENDED GIFTS Blended gifts combine cash or other outright gifts, which make an impact now, and deferred gifts through bequest, beneficiary designations, charitable trusts or charitable gift annuities, which provide additional resources to fund or bolster a gift in the future. With a blended gift, donors can make their giving go further. Educational Foundation donors Sharon and Doug Rothwell (see article on page 1) made an outright gift to fund a scholarship that is awarded in their names. In addition, they established a Charitable Remainder Unitrust that provides an income stream to them for life. When the charitable remainder vests at the end of their lives, the proceeds will be used to augment the scholarship awarded in their names. Blended gifts and how they are structured are unique for every person the gift structure and strategy match your philanthropic interest with your personal financial situation. Here are some examples of ways you may choose to structure a blended gift: EXAMPLE STRATEGY 1 TOTAL GIFT CURRENT PORTION DEFERRED PORTION CONTINUED ANNUAL SUPPORT IN PERPETUITY Annual Big Ram Plus Membership Level Gift $2,000 per year with periodic increases for membership level increases $40,000 estate gift to be invested in The Educational Foundation s Endowment to provide annual support at the Big Ram Plus membership level in perpetuity. EXAMPLE STRATEGY 2 TOTAL GIFT CURRENT PORTION DEFERRED PORTION PLEDGE GUARANTEED VIA BEQUEST $100,000 Field Hockey Naming Opportunity $20,000 per year for five years Estate provision to ensure any outstanding pledge amount is satisfied if unforeseen circumstances arise. EXAMPLE STRATEGY 3 TOTAL GIFT CURRENT PORTION DEFERRED PORTION VIRTUAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT $500,000 Scholarship Current Pledge of $50,000 per year for 5 years to fund an endowed half scholarship $250,000 IRA beneficiary designation that will vest through the donor s estate plans Where your charitable plans include The Educational Foundation, consider a planned gift as a potential funding option to bolster or establish your Carolina legacy. The Educational Foundation and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill s Office of Gift Planning are available to discuss options and strategies to realize your charitable objectives in Chapel Hill. Please contact Sue Walsh at the Rams Club ( /sue@ramsclub.com) or Beth MacKethan at the Office of Gift Planning ( /bmackethan@unc.edu) to discuss options. As always, please consult a financial professional and/or legal advisor before pursuing any charitable strategy.

Dear Legacy Donors, As many of you know, we have launched The Campaign for Carolina Athletics as a part of the University s comprehensive campaign. We are pleased to announce that we raised nearly 40% of our $500 million goal during the silent phase. Despite our excitement, we have a long way to go to make sure we can continue to provide the same level of scholarship support to our 28 teams and we will need everyone s participation. It was former Educational Foundation Executive Director Ernie Williamson s goal that one day the Scholarship Trust would produce enough income to cover the entire cost of the athletic scholarship program here at Carolina. This year alone, the cost to educate our student-athletes is expected to be more than $17 million. The Scholarship Trust will provide a distribution that will cover only 60% of the total cost, so it s imperative that we grow it through additional contributions. Every Rams Club member can help us close the scholarship funding gap. We hope you will consider making a gift before year-end and while the current tax laws are still favorable. The Educational Foundation s mission is to provide educational and athletic opportunities to Carolina student-athletes. We can t do so without Rams Club members, the team behind the teams. For further information on the scholarship initiative, please contact me. I look forward to speaking with you further about the transformational impact your support can have. GO HEELS!
