Source: Monroe County News, May 31, 1948 Long, Long Journey Home Ends 500 Attend Funeral Rites for Richard Ward, Army Captain A long, long journey home ended for a soldier Monday. They brought Richard Ward back for burial in Mount Calvary cemetery, high on a hill overlooking Melrose. The son of Melrose postmaster James Ward, Captain Ward was killed June 13, 1944, at Normandy, in the action which spelled the beginning of the end of the great war in Europe. More than 500 persons, including veterans in uniform from Melrose, Albia, Lovilia, Russell and Chariton, joined in final tribute to Captain Ward. The solemn requiem mass in St. Patrick church was sung by the Rev. Leo Ward of Notre Dame university, assisted by the Rev. Henry Geer of Weller and the Rev. F. J. Lenoch, assistant pastor of St. Patrick. The impressive words of the mass carried through the open doors to the overflow portion of the mourners gathered on the steps and on the lawn surrounding the church. In his sermon, Father Lenoch said no flowers, no words no announcement can equal the spirit of prayer which prevail today. He said that while monuments perpetuate memories, prayers show our love and our gratitude. And as we pray for Captain Ward, let us not forget the others from this community, this state, this nation who died that this nation and its children might enjoy freedom. Father Lenoch said posterity may forget the war or the battle or the names of the men who died, but it will never forget why they died. The theme of the sermon was the cross which mars the soldier s grave, and the sacrifice which it symbolizes the death of Jesus Christ.

5 The flag-draped casket was carried by Paul Dinneen, James Kenworthy, Joe Lahart, John Moran, John Conway and James Foster. Military honors were under the direction of the Richard F. Ward post of the American Legion, Melrose. Captain Ward was born in Melrose September 5, He was graduated from Melrose public schools and Albia Junior college and received a degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State college in He entered military service in August of that year. At the time of his death, he was a company commander in the 38th infantry regiment of the second division. Source: Albia Union Republican, June 3, 1948 Captain Richard F. Ward The fortieth anniversary of D-Day this year, brought into focus once again, the agony and the anticipation of the last days of World War II. It was on D-Day plus seven, on the Cherbourg Peninsula in France when one of our sons, Richard F. Ward, as commander of his unit died while leading his troops in an attack on the enemy. He was twenty-seven years old on that battlefield in France forty years ago. Dick Ward grew up in Melrose, ran around on our streets, fished in our ponds, skinny-dipped in Cedar, and died on a field of war so that his son and his grandchildren and other children could live in peace. His handsome face is seen now in the yellowed newspaper clippings that tell of his heroic death and the impressive ceremonies of his military burial in Mount Calvary. The Melrose American Legion Post was named in his honor, and he has become the symbol of all our sons - from all the wars - the brave ones and the frightened ones - who went where they had to go, and did what had to be done - for all of us. Source: "But of Course They Were Irish", by Evelyn Sinclair Tierney, page 107.

6 ~~~~ Died June 13, 1944 in Cherbourg Peninsula, France. Was killed in action shortly after D-day while serving as an Army lieutenant. He was reportedly shot in the back of the head by a German soldier who had just been captured. After WW II was over, his body was brought back to Melrose, Iowa and he was buried in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The American Legion Post at Melrose was named for him. He was an engineering graduate of Iowa State College. Source: Notes of Tom Kenworthy, Aug. 10, ~~~~
