29 The Girl Who Danced With The Brolgas 1. The people lived on the plains and in the hills. They saw the brolgas dance each evening. 3. One young girl loved the brolgas. She loved them more than she loved her mother. Every evening, she went out to the plains to watch the brolgas dancing and she danced together with them there. 5. One evening, the brolgas danced and danced. They moved further out onto the plains. When it grew dark, they stopped dancing and flew away. The girl ran after them. Wait for me, she called. 7. She tried to go back to her camp but could not find the way. The night grew darker and darker. She crept under the grasses and slept until morning. 9. In the morning, the brolgas returned, and the girl woke. She called to them but they moved away from her. The girl followed and ate food with them. All day she stayed with them. 11. In the evening, she began dancing with them again. 13. When it was dark the brolgas flew away again. The girl slept under the grass again. Each day, she walked and ate with the brolgas. Each night, she slept under the grass. 15. The water began to dry up. The people called and called the girl but she did not hear them. They thought she was dead. So they went away without her. They went to another place in the hills where there was plenty of water. 17. Then, one day, when the water was almost gone, the brolgas did not come back. They flew to another pool. The young girl called and called the brolgas. Everyday, she looked for the brolgas but they had gone. 19. When the rains came again, the people and brolgas came back. The girl was no longer a girl. She had grown small and changed into a small brown bird that fluttered near the brolgas. It called to them during the day. At night it slept in the grass. 21. Each year, when the brolgas fly away, the little brown bird stays. It digs a hole under the grass. It stays there away from the heat of the day and the cold of the night. 23. Each year, when the brolgas come back, the little brown bird come out. It flutters about near the broglas and calls to them as they feed.
