One of UC s greatest strengths is its long history of discovery; innovation that truly transforms our lives. Under our new strategic vision, UC 21, we are working even more aggressively to build research collaborations that transfer our discoveries into real benefits for our region, nation, and world. - Nancy L. Zimpher, President University of Cincinnati

The Intellectual Property Office is pleased to present its first annual report. In 2005 the Intellectual Property Office took a hard look at its operations and performance measures, and realigned itself to better serve the University of Cincinnati faculty and support regional business development. Our mission is to facilitate, advocate, and collaborate with UC faculty, students, and staff to support an environment with invention and innovation for the public good. By providing timely and quality service in assisting faculty with the capture and protection of the intellectual property associated with their discovery and invention, the Intellectual Property Office staff is dedicated to finding new and creative ways to drive the discoveries into the marketplace. We look forward to working closely with UC faculty staff and students to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and discoveries to benefit our region and our world. Sandra Degen Ph.D. Vice President for Research Anne H. Chasser Associate Vice President Intellectual Property Office

Meet UC Inventors: Dr. Ambikaipakan Balasubramaniam Obesity is rising in stature as a world-wide health issue, and has been identified as one of the most important risk factors for poor health outcomes in the United States. UC recently licensed a portfolio of cases and technologies developed by Dr. Ambi Balasubramaniam to a domestic biopharmacy company for development. The license agreement for the deal covered a number of UC technology cases and related patents in exchange for a significant up-front fee and numerous development milestones and royalties. Dr. Stephen Liggett Personalized medicine is one of the most prominent trends in health care delivery in the United States. UC researchers, led by Dr. Stephen Liggett, have developed patented technology to address important health care issues related to an individual s risk for cardiovascular disease. UC recently licensed multiple cases and patents related to CV diagnostics to a domestic start-up company backed by a well-known west coast venture capital group in exchange for a substantial license fee, as well as development milestones and royalties.

Meet UC Inventors: Dr. Theresa Reineke Dr. Theresa Reineke in UC s Department of Chemistry is at the forefront of research into the development of low-toxicity, self-assembling polymers for the efficient delivery of therapeutics to cells. In collaboration with Dr. Keith Jones of the Department of Pharmacology & Cell Biophysics in the College of Medicine, Dr. Reineke is working toward developing methods for the treatment for ischemic heart disease. UC s Intellectual Property Office is working with these two investigators to develop a patent strategy that will make UC an attractive partner for a commercial licensee. Dr. Wim van Ooij Dr. Wim van Ooij from the department of Chemical and Materials Engineering in the College of Engineering, is one of our most prolific inventors at the University of Cincinnati. In fact, he has just crossed a milestone for having submitted 100 invention disclosures for his work in Adhesion Science; Polymer-Metal Interfaces; Corrosion; Electrochemisty; Time-of-Fligh SIMS; Surface Analysis; Plasma Polymerization; Surface Modification of Materials; and Chemistry Of Organofunctional Silanes at Metal Surfaces and in Solution.

A Special Tribute Blood storage technology is one of the most important tools that modern healthcare relies upon to support in-patient health and recovery. Dr. Tibor Greenwalt developed some of the most significant advances in blood storage technology in the last thirty years. UC recently licensed multiple technology cases and patents as part of a UC-led management effort with the University of Maryland and the US Army to a domestic start-up company for development. After an illustrious career at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Tibor Greenwalt passed away in July Tibor J. Tibby Greenwalt, M.D. January 23, 1914 July 17, 2005

Meet the University Patent Committee Clockwise: Tom Mantei, Ph.D., Chairman, John Cuppoletti, Ph.D., Sandra Degen, Ph.D., Anne Chasser, Eric Gruenstein, Ph.D., and Doug Nienaber. Missing in the photograph are Theresa Reineke, Ph.D. and William Heineman, Ph.D. The University of Cincinnati's Intellectual Property Committee advises the Vice-President for Research on intellectual property issues, and acts as a fact-finding body on disagreements arising out of the administration of patent and copyright policies.
