Inspired by the Senior Day of Caring, a tradition at Borger High School in which seniors participate in various service projects around the community, Tyler Wright organized a senior football player day of caring. Tyler helped organize the event by contacting the organization that helps with the Senior Day of Caring to connect them with a home in need of attention. We wanted to be able to give back to the community as a team. It also gives us a chance to bond as a team, Tyler said. The 2018 varsity football team includes Luke Ammerman, Zach Armstrong, Jared Brittain, Josh Deleon, Isaiah Garza, Rey Heredia, Jayden Lasley, Ivan Medina, Ryley Moyer, Alex Ortiz, Robert Ramirez, Keller Rhoton, Isaak Segovia and Taylor Wright. Coach Brian Coker says he hopes to continue to senior football day of caring in the future and turn it into a tradition. At first, my oldest son, Kendall claimed her as his own, but he soon discovered Shiro loves everyone in the household. My youngest son, Dylan, who has Asperger s, has always had a special bond with dogs, so when he saw Shiro for the first time, it was love at first sight. Shiro is a loyal friend to Dylan, which is what he s needed for a long time. Shiro is part Lab, Husky, and Border Collie. We re not exactly sure of her age but think she s around two or three. She is mostly white with brown spots. Kendall named Shiro, and her name means white in Japanese. She s extremely smart and tries to talk. Her favorite words are oh and out. She loves sitting beside my dad when he s in his favorite chair and spend time with him. I always learn life lessons from Shiro. She exudes so much joy and always does something to make me smile. Every day, she exhibits patience and unconditional love. When I m upset, Shiro is right there to offer comfort. 2 2 Texas military veteran arrested for allegedly mailing bombs BORGER NEWS-HERALD BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) A 40-year-old military veteran was arrested in connection with two explosive devices found in southeast Texas in recent weeks, federal prosecutors said Friday. Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI said in a news conference that they had linked the devices and postcards with cryptic messages referring to the bombs that were sent to the Beaumont Police Department to Jonathan Matthew Torres. Investigators found mousetraps, screws and other components of the devices and postal materials while executing a search warrant Thursday at Torres Beaumont home. After the search, Torres was taken into federal custody without incident. A device exploded May 10 outside an Episcopal church, shattering windows and causing other damage. No one was hurt. Another device that didn t detonate was found April 26 inside a U.S. Postal Service mailbox near a Starbucks. The device consisted of a mailing package containing explosive material and a mousetrap that was designed to be triggered when the package was opened, according to a probable cause affidavit. Police found a note in the package reading Haji die U.S.A., and signed J.H. U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas Joseph Brown said during the news conference Friday that evidence found in Torres home suggested he was preparing and had the capacity to mail a more damaging device. Brown said that with Torres in custody, he was very confident that there s no further threat to the public. He said investigators are still determining a motive, but they had ruled out international terrorism or racial or religious animosity. Shiro Continued from page 1 She s even, on occasion, watched brief moments of Texas Rangers games with me, so it seems she s a baseball fan as well. My mom, Eva Aikin, says, She s obedient, friendly, and is a great pet all around. My dad, Homer Aikin, adds that She s very attentive to what goes on in the house as well as outside, especially in her territory. If I rattle a piece of paper, Shiro comes running from the opposite end of the house to see if I have something for her to eat. Shiro loves her treats. Since Shiro was a stray, my mom emphasized the importance of pet adoption, saying that, You ll get a great dog that needs a home. That s so true, and we re blessed to have Shiro in our lives. Torres was charged with using an explosive to cause property damage, possession of an unregistered destructive device and mailing a threatening communication. He is scheduled to appear in court May 29. If convicted, Torres faces between five and 20 years in prison. Earlier this month, police said they were working to ensure the incidents didn t mirror the recent events of Austin. The discovery of the devices in Beaumont followed a series of package bombs that exploded in the Austin area over a three-week period, killing two people and severely wounding four others. The suspect used one of his own devices to blow himself up as authorities approached his stopped vehicle on March 21. Torres alluded to the Austin bombings in postcards mailed to Beaumont police, according to the affidavit. Police received a postcard a day after discovering the device near the Starbucks that was stylistically similar to the note found with that device, the affidavit said. Do you want (Beaumont) to become another Austin, it read. It was signed J. Hancock. Investigators said they later learned Torres had reported to Beaumont police in 2016 that his then-roommate, John Hancock, had stolen four firearms. Brown said authorities are not pursuing other suspects. 1-year 2-year 3-year *Annual Percentage Yield (APY), effective May 17, 2018 offered by Edward Jones are bank-issued and FDIC-insured up to $250,000 (principal and accrued interest accrued but not yet paid) per depositor, per depository institution, for each account ownership category. 3 Borger News-Herald 3 Corn producers receiving Syngenta litigation settlement notices have options KAY LEDBETTER Submitted AMARILLO,TX U.S. corn producers may be seeing a light at the end of the tunnel related to the ongoing Syngenta class action suit, and many are trying to figure out how to proceed, said a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service specialist in Amarillo. I ve been receiving many phone calls and the main questions have been, Why am I getting this notice? and What does this mean for me? said Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, AgriLife Extension agricultural law specialist in Amarillo. The answer is all corn producers who fall within the class definition are included as part of the class in the proposed settlement and will be affected by this settlement, regardless of their knowledge of or action in the case up to this point, Lashmet said. The settlement agreement has a broad class definition, which includes anyone who owned any interest in corn priced for sale between Sept. 15, 2013 and April 10, The lawsuit originated as a result of Syngenta s release in 2010 of seed varieties approved in the U.S. but not in China. In 2013, U.S. corn shipments arrived in China and were rejected due to the presence of the MIR-162, a genetically modified trait found in Viptera and Duracade. Shortly after the shipments were rejected, U.S. corn prices fell, Lashmet said. Farmers who did not plant the seeds filed suit claiming Syngenta s false assurances about imminent approval by the Chinese government constituted fraud and the rejection of corn by the Chinese caused the drop in the market, causing monetary damages. Tens of thousands of lawsuits were filed across the U.S., and the vast majority were consolidated in multidistrict litigation in the District of Kansas federal court. In that litigation, the plaintiffs sought to certify 21 classes of farmer plaintiffs, divided by state; Texas was among them. During the course of the litigation, the parties reached a tentative settlement Lashmet explained the federal court handling these lawsuits against Syngenta has granted Solo Continued from page 1 The Star Wars franchise had new life breathed into it with the release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and since then its movies have garnered massive attention, albeit not entirely positive. The latest film in the series is not an episodic title, but rather a look into the backstory of one of the franchise s most beloved characters. In Solo: A Star Wars Story, we hop into the cockpit with young Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich. The opening scenes on the ship-building planet of Corellia thrust the audience into a movie filled to the brim with action and witty remarks as we witness the beginnings of the charismatic outlaw a young, smart-mouthed scumrat who aspires to become the best pilot in the galaxy. Encouraged and aided by his beautiful companion Kira; played by Emilia Clarke; Solo finds himself leaving his home-world and signing up with none other than the Imperial Navy. Solo: A Star Wars Story takes place earlier in the timeline than the movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The galaxy is in the midst of the rising power and influence of the Empire, and the Rebellion is just a whisper on the wind. From Corellia, we follow young Solo as lady luck shines or frowns upon him and he finds himself labeled a deserter. A chance encounter sets the stage for the beginning of the galaxy s greatest dynamic duo, as Solo meets the Wookie Chewbacca. Han Solo s adventures land him entangled with a group of galactic smugglers as they prepare for one of their heists. When the deal goes south due to the arrival of an enemy known as Enfys Nest, the gang finds themselves needing to settle the score with Dryden Vos. A daring plan is put together to obtain a payload of coaxium fuel from the mining planet of Kessel. To accomplish their mark, however, the group will need a fast enough ship that can make the Kessel Run. The only way to obtain a ship like this is none other than to seek out Lando Calrissian, portrayed by Donald Glover. preliminary approval to a proposed settlement agreement that would award $1.51 billion to over 600,000 class members. Class members are people eligible to receive settlement proceeds and who will be barred from pursuing additional claims or litigation against Syngenta in this matter. If any corn producer or a landowner who was part of a crop-share lease involving corn meets that broad definition, he or she is a member of the class and will receive notice, Lashmet said. She said this means corn farmers or landlords meeting the requirements to be considered class members are now receiving notices in their mailbox and instructions on how to proceed. When producers receive the official court notice in the mail, it will outline the facts of the underlying lawsuit, explain the settlement between the parties and then allow class members to make some decisions. Lashmet explained that producers essentially have four options: Option 1: Submit a claims form and remain in the class. The deadline for returning the claims form is Oct. 12. This option allows the producer to receive his or her share of the settlement funds and waive the right to make future claims against Syngenta related to this litigation. This form also authorizes the claim administrator to gather necessary data to calculate a producer s share of the settlement funds, specifically the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency form 578 or USDA Risk Management Agency data. If a producer did not report corn acreage to FSA, he or she can include the information on the form to allow calculations to be made. It also seeks information related to leases to determine if the landlord will qualify as a producer based on the structure of the lease agreement. Option 2: Opt out of the class. Members have the right to opt out of the class by submitting written requests for exclusion. By Aug. 10, any member who does not submit a timely exclusion request will be included in the class and deemed to have waived their right to opt out. Lashmet said persons who opt out will not receive any of the settlement funds, but will retain their right to file suit against Syngenta individually, subject to any applicable statutes of limitation. The actors and actresses that makeup Solo s cast maintain an excellent level of performance throughout the film. Ehrenreich brings the witty and arrogant personality of the beloved outlaw to life believably and entertainingly. Clarke and Glover each portray their characters in such a stylistic manner that it keeps the viewers entertained throughout the movie. Even the character of Tobias Beckett, played by Woody Harrelson, is delivered solidly. Despite being a movie entirely dedicated to the more grounded history of the Star Wars universe, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a movie to be enjoyed by viewers of all ages. Though you won t see any flashy lightsaber battles or discussions about the Force, the film plays out in an entertaining manner. At several points in the movie, characters express having good feelings about their situation an interesting play on the franchise s catchphrase I have a bad feeling about this that fits the nature of Han Solo and his eventual role in the original trilogy. Likewise, remaining true to Solo and his beliefs that the Force is a nothing but hokey religion, not a single character uttering May the Force be with you is to be found. The omission of the two most well-known phrases in Star Wars history is an interesting stylistic choice, but one that makes sense when you look at the context of the characters and the movie. This is not a movie about the Jedi and the Sith; nor is it a movie about a Rebellion fighting to bring light back to the galaxy. It remains a film about the middlemen; the smugglers and the oppressed, and the lifestyles of those who favor neither side in the intergalactic schism. All in all, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a movie that is worth the time to watch. The runtime comes in a little over two hours long, and it is sure to keep you entertained as any Star Wars film worth its merit should. So, the next time you are in the market for a movie to enjoy, give Solo a chance. Importantly, even if a class member previously opted out of the case when class notice was sent, they will be required to opt out again if they do not desire to be part of this settlement class. Option 3: Object to the settlement. Any party who does not opt out of the class has the right to object to the settlement terms by filing a written objection with the court. Objections must be filed by Aug. 10. Option 4: Do nothing. Producers who do nothing will be included as a class member since they did not effectively opt out, which means they will lose their right to sue Syngenta separately for these claims and will not receive any money from the settlement. Lashmet warns, however, this is not the end of the judicial review and producers will not be seeing checks in their mailbox anytime soon as a fairness hearing and final approval will be required before the settlement can be entered and payments made to the class members. The final approval hearing will be held Nov. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. At that time, the court will determine whether the settlement is approved as fair, reasonable and adequate, enter a final judgment in the case, and consider any applications for attorneys fees. Any class member filing the required notice of objection will be heard at this time. If, at that time, the court grants final settlement approval, the claims payment processing will begin, Lashmet said. For the 58th year, the House has passed an NDAA, one that puts the men and women in uniform first and is another large step in rebuilding and repairing our longneglected military, Thornberry said. Our servicemembers selflessly fight LEGALS for our freedom every day, and in return, we must ensure that they have the best training, equipment, and support our nation can provide. This bill also continues to reform the Pentagon to help speed up decisionmaking and get equipment to our warfighters faster. The NDAA authorizes $717 billion in spending for defense needs, including significant increases for readiness recovery, and it fully funds a 2.6 percent pay raise for our troops, the highest increase in 9 years. It also extends special pay and bonuses for servicemembers in high-demand fields to combat the high turnover of these jobs. Other Highlights include: Authorizes $18.5 billion to begin to rehabilitate and replace worn our Army equipment, $39.4 billion to begin address the military aviation crisis, $36 billion to restore our at sea strength, and $23.3 billion to rebuild military buildings and infrastructure; Funds the growth or our Army, Navy, Air Force, Naval and Air Reserve, and Air Guard; Increases funding for training in each service; Creates a Chief Management Officer (CMO) who will be charged with finding newspaper will not the Air Force and increases and otherthisfacilities across NO CREDIT CHECK! knowingly accept any advertising for real estate which funding for flying hours the enterprise, theis in bill OVER 150 violation of the law. by $24.2 million, which provides anare hereby additional All persons informed Vehicles In that all dwellings, advertised are will allow for more time $150 available million above on an equal opportunity Stock! basis. in the air for Pick-ups our pilots. the budget request and Vans It includes an additional Cars SUV srequires the National $10.0 million to help Nuclear Security accelerate technology Administration (NNSA) development required to to report to Congress on See entire stock of vehicles at it is implementing mitigate physiological how episodes and $2.8 billion the Infrastructure for the procurement of Modernization Initiative LEGALS LEGALS spare airplane parts for that Congress mandated the Navy, Marine Corps, last year. and Air Force.
