Nelson was in the Civil War in 1862 and 1863 as a Private in Company G, 29th Infantry, Division from New Jersey with many of his cousins, in-laws, etc. He married Catherine Walton in Atlantic Township, Monmouth, New Jersey, February 17, Catherine was born in Atlantic Township, Monmouth, New Jersey September 8, Catherine was the daughter of John L.
