The reality is that for years there has been obstacles resulting in a misalignment of interests with limited transparency into key business factors, like pricing and compensation structures. Today, however, leaders across the legal industry are no longer debating about the need for change, but rather are collaborating to embrace change in new and different ways. With the voice of the client serving as a driving force towards more diverse and creative matter staffing, value-based billing, hybrid service models and alignment of reporting and metrics, this session will build off the previous day s discussions and provide an opportunity for leaders to start with a blank slate and design a mutually agreed upon relationship that will benefit both parties. 6 SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS Rochael Adranly Partner + General Counsel IDEO Rochael Soper Adranly is a Partner and General Counsel at the international design firm IDEO. A JD/LLM graduate of Duke Law School in Durham, North Carolina, Rochael has been representing creative and innovative individuals and organizations as well as pursuing her own creative projects for close to 20 years. She has been a lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, an adjunct professor at UC Hastings College of the Law, and recently taught Designing Creative Legal Solutions at Duke Law School s Winter Session. Rochael has been featured in Modern Counsel magazine for her role as a creative counselor, walking the fine line between the rules based world of law and the non-rules based world of innovation, as well as in GC Magazine as a lawyer who thinks like a designer. Rochael was chosen by the Financial Times as one of 20 top general counsel worldwide. In 2015 Rochael worked closely with her IDEO colleagues to create IDEO s Legal Design + Innovation practice. Through LD+I, IDEO is bringing its human-centered design offering to clients in the broader legal industry, building on IDEO s work in the fields of healthcare, government, professional services and education. Today IDEO is working to solve some of the most pressing challenges of the legal industry. Ronaldo Borger Chief Talent Officer Faegre Baker Daniels LLP Ronaldo Borger is the chief talent officer at Faegre Baker Daniels, where he leads a team focused on enabling individuals, leaders, teams and the firm to perform at their highest levels. Ronaldo designs and implements people strategies to create a culture of high performance, aligned with firm s overall strategy. Ronaldo works with FaegreBD s management board and executive committee to attract superior talent and develop FaegreBD s 750+ legal and consulting professionals and operations teams. Before joining FaegreBD, Ronaldo was chief human resources officer at Seyfarth Shaw where he helped transform the talent and human resources functions, rolled out innovative competency models and training and development programs for attorneys, led an executive coaching program for high-potential partners, and co-chaired the Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Team. A native of Brazil, Ronaldo has international experience leading talent management. He previously worked 5

He began his career working as a management consultant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Karen Braun Executive Director Sullivan & Cromwell LLP Karen L. Braun is the Executive Director of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. Working with the Management Committee and members of the firm, Ms. Braun oversees the strategic planning and administration of the Firm. Recognized in Empire s Who s Who Among Executive and Professional Women, Ms. Braun is a frequent lecturer and author. She has spoken on topics for Thomson Reuters, American Bar Association, Association of Corporate Counsel and Marketing Partner Forum. She currently serves as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Law Firm, Inc., an ALM Media publication, the Senior Business Women s Forum and other organizations. Michael Caplan Chief Operating Officer Goodwin Procter LLP Mr. Caplan, who joined Goodwin in 2014, serves as the firm s chief operating officer. As COO, he manages the firm s business, financial and administrative operations. He serves on Goodwin s Executive and Management Committees, and focuses on the firm s growth strategy and execution. His background includes roles in both corporate and consulting management positions where has worked with over 30 general counsels in managing data analytics, technology project implementation, law firm relationship management and financial management. In consulting, he focused on managing engagements related to intelligent cost reduction for non-compensation expenses, program management, compliance, risk management and legal spend management. These practice areas focus on building relationships with corporate legal, sourcing and finance departments. With legal, he focuses on teaching attorneys to use technology solutions to drive optimal return on investment for the business through the use of metrics, reports and trend analysis. Additionally, Mr. Caplan has worked with general counsels, legal CAOs and CIOs to develop reporting metrics and dashboards to focus on key spend areas such as litigation, e-discovery, outside counsel accruals and alternative fee savings. 6

8 Lauren Chung Managing Director HBR Consulting Lauren serves as a managing director for HBR Consulting with over 15 years of management consulting experience. She leads the Law Department Advisory practice and works with general counsel and law department leadership on strategic, process and operational improvement initiatives. Clients value Lauren s expertise in assisting law departments to drive transformational efforts that achieve organizational and operational efficiency through the alignment of people, process and technology. Since its inception, Lauren has been leading the HBR Law Department Survey, a leading source of benchmarking data for law departments. She publishes and speaks regularly to industry groups on law department management best practices and the use of metrics to demonstrate the value of the legal function. Prior to joining HBR, Lauren was a management consultant in corporate strategy at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Outside of work, Lauren and her husband are proud parents of four children. She is also actively involved in community initiatives focused on helping children and youth. Robert Craig Chief Information Officer Baker & Hostetler LLP Bob Craig reports to the Chairman and oversees strategic and emerging technology plans to support the firm s business needs. He is responsible for all aspects of the firm s Information Technology and Information Resources, including Library, Legal Research Services, Litigation Services, IP Services and Practice Services. Bob s primary role is to leverage and protect the firm s knowledge capital as well as create operating efficiencies through the effective use of sophisticated information technology. Bob s entire career of more than 32 years has been in the Information Technology arena with 25 of those years in the legal industry. 7

9 James Desjardins Associate Director of Practice Technology Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP As Cravath s Associate Director of Practice Technology, James Desjardins works closely with the Firm s legal staff and technology departments to evaluate and deploy the most current and effective tools from across the rapidly-evolving legal technology landscape. James also monitors and advises on the strategic opportunities presented by emerging technologies in such areas as artificial intelligence and blockchain, among others, to help ensure that the Firm remains at the forefront of innovation in its delivery of legal services. Mr. Desjardins, an attorney, spent five years as a corporate associate in Cravath s New York and London offices representing multi-national corporations and global financial institutions in transformative M&A and capital markets transactions before transitioning to his present role. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Desjardins spent several years as a professional programmer and software designer in Montreal, Canada. He holds an LL.B. and a B.C.L. from the McGill University Faculty of Law, and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering summa cum laude from McGill University. Peggy Giunta Chief Legal Personnel and Development Officer and Chief Practice Management Officer WilmerHale Peggy L. Giunta is the Chief Legal Personnel and Professional Development Officer and the Chief Practice Management Officer at WilmerHale. In these roles, Ms. Giunta is a member of a six-person executive leadership team and works with firm management to support WilmerHale s strategic objectives in the areas of legal talent and legal department and practice group management. Ms. Giunta oversees all legal personnel and development functions, focusing on the firm s goal to maintain its reputation for excellence in the delivery of client service by attracting, developing, managing, and retaining the highest quality attorney talent. Ms. Giunta leads a team of directors who have functional responsibility for all attorney recruitment, compensation, evaluation, development and training and attorney diversity programs. Ms. Giunta also leads the Practice Management Department, which has functional responsibility for managing the people, technology and business needs of the firm s legal departments and practice groups. In this capacity, she leads a team of directors and managers who work with the firm s legal department partner chairs to manage these groups business functions, including business and strategic planning, budget and financial reporting, and attorney workload management. 8

10 Ms. Giunta also oversees the activities of WilmerHale DiscoverySolutions, for which she had a leadership role in developing, which provides clients with expert e-discovery services. Ms. Giunta is a graduate of the Harvard Business School General Management Program and received her Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Steve Harmon Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Legal Cisco Steven is a member of the Cisco Legal executive management team where he manages the Legal Technology Solutions ( LTS ); Global Export Trade ( GET ) teams; the global process for Trademarks and Corporate Marketing, and the Global Center of Excellence an industry-leading example of the use of captive Legal Process Outsourcing. The LTS team is chartered with developing and maintaining systems and process that support the efficiency and accuracy of legal functions at Cisco. These systems and processes include contract management, export compliance tools, regulatory compliance, legal knowledge management, web-based resources, and file room operations. The GET team is responsible for expediting Cisco s worldwide trade by ensuring global compliance with global export rules and regulations. Steven is also a co-founder and Board member of the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (cloc.org) whose broad mission is to promote industry collaboration among in-house legal operations professionals. Steven holds a B.S. degree in Business Management (Information Systems emphasis) and a J.D. degree, both from Brigham Young University. Sean Hewens Senior Design Lead IDEO As a Senior Design Lead in IDEO s Design for Change studio in San Francisco, Sean helps organizations use human-centered design to be more futurefacing and purpose-led. Sean is fascinated with designing systems that allow organizations to make bold decisions based upon bottom up insights from customers or employees, and less on top-down intuition from far away offices. Sean also co-leads IDEO s legal innovation practice, where he is bringing the legal profession kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Prior to joining IDEO s organizational change studio, Sean spent many years at IDEO. 9

During his time at IDEO.org, Sean also led design projects to spread human-centered design in the social sector, including the launch of the HCD Connect on-line platform (funded by the Gates Foundation!) and the creation of the Human-Centered Design for Social Innovation course, which has been taken by nearly 100,000 people around the world. Sean holds an undergraduate degree from Columbia University, a law degree from Georgetown, and attended Massachusetts College of Art & Design. Milos Kresojevic Founding Partner AI Legal Milos is the founder of AI.Legal Labs and a thought leader on use of AI in legal industry. Prior to entering Silicon Valley, Milos was the Global Innovation Lead at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as well as worked with the IBM Research Lab. He is a regular speaker on AI and Big Law across the world and presented at ICAL 2017 at King s College. Milos has an MBA from Columbia University and London Business School and a Masters of Science in aerospace engineering from the University of Belgrade. Milos s current primary focus is researching the impact of AI and wider disruptive technologies on Big Law and Access to Justice. Joshua Kubicki Founder & President Legal Transformation Institute LLC Josh Kubicki is the founder of the Legal Transformation Institute, a strategic design firm. Josh is a veteran of building new services and products in the legal market. Over the last 20 years, he has merged his experience in design thinking, lean six sigma, and strategy execution to become one of the most capable builders and doers within the business of law. In 2007, he was recognized with an innovation award from The Adecco Group for designing and building a new and highly successful business for the company. He has been the focus of numerous publications on design, strategy and law firm leadership, authored the ebook Six Suggestions for Legal Intrapreneurs, and was an adjunct professor at Michigan State University College of Law, where he taught the first law school class on design thinking for lawyers. He is also a writer, keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, and former Chief Strategy Officer to a leading global law firm. 10

12 Juanita Luna Director of Legal Operations and Administration, Office of the General Counsel Pacific Gas and Electric Company Juanita has been the Director of Legal Operations & Administration at Pacific Gas & Electric for over five years. Previously she was the Executive Director, U.S. & Asia at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. She has also served in senior management roles at Bain & Company and Latham & Watkins. Juanita is a frequent public speaker in Corporate Legal Operations industry best practices and also broader company initiatives in Diversity & Inclusion. In 2016 she was awarded the Legal In-House Impact Award Winner by The Recorder/ ALM Media. A graduate of Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., she also holds an Executive Management Certificate from the Drucker Graduate Management Center at Claremont. She has been an instructor in Law Firm Management at the University of California at Irvine Extension Program. Juanita is active in San Francisco community activities. She is a Board member of the Center for the Art of Translation, dedicated to finding important and underrepresented voices brought into English by the most skilled translators. Molly Tynan Perry Chief Operating Officer, Office of the General Counsel Hewlett Packard Enterprise Molly Tynan Perry is the Chief Operating Officer for the Office of Legal and Administrative Affairs at Hewlett Packard Enterprise based in Palo Alto, California. Prior to her role as COO, Perry was Director of Operations for HP s Intellectual Property team and held positions in HP s Corporate Strategy group, as well as strategy and planning roles in HP s Enterprise business. Prior to joining HP Perry held financial management positions with Convex Computer Corporation, including worldwide controllership functions, public reporting, and worldwide tax strategy and compliance. Before the move to Convex Perry was a director with Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young) in Dallas, Texas where she practiced as a Certified Public Accountant, focused on airlines and technology industries, and multinational tax planning. Perry is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin. 11

13 Nick Quil Chief Executive Officer HBR Consulting Nick serves as chief executive officer of HBR Consulting. He oversees and drives strategic planning and works closely with practice group leaders, the leadership team and operations to align services with broader strategic objectives. He also leads all business development, sales and go-to-market activities. Recognized as a thought leader, Nick has 20 years of experience collaborating with clients on strategic sourcing, procurement and process improvement engagements. Nick regularly conducts industry briefings for law firm leaders to share insights on how developing trends from within corporate law departments are influencing future law firm operations and strategies. Prior to co-founding HBR, Nick was instrumental in the development of Huron Consulting Group s legal consulting practice. Nick serves as a member of the Accountancy Advisory Group (AAG) for Miami University. Chris Ryan Managing Director HBR Consulting Chris serves as a managing director and leads the Law Firm Advisory practice for HBR Consulting. Chris focuses on process improvement, business operations leveraging technology for the matter lifecycle, and expense management for clients. He has worked with clients around the globe, from Fortune 500 companies to professional services firms, and has acquired over 15 years of strategic and operational consulting experience across a variety of industries. Prior to joining HBR, Chris was founder and managing principal of Overwing and a director of Huron Consulting Group s Strategic Operational Consulting Practice. Chris is an active member of the Chicago nonprofit community and currently serves as an executive council member of The Cara Program, as well as an ambassador for the venture philanthropy fund, A Better Chicago. 12

14 Gregory Smith Chairman Husch Blackwell Greg became Chairman of Husch Blackwell in 2018 after serving as the CEO and Managing Partner from In his new role, he is responsible for chairing the Chief Policy Committee of the firm, developing and communicating the firm s strategic direction and ensuring that its policies and culture align with this direction. A recognized and trusted dealmaker in the real estate industry, Greg has played a critical part in some of the biggest property transactions in the Midwest. A member of the Real Estate, Development & Construction team, Greg counsels public and private clients in all facets of real estate transactions, with particular emphasis on public / private partnerships. He has been active in identifying and structuring public incentives for corporate relocations, commercial real estate developments and public infrastructure projects. He has represented both private and public parties in some of the most significant tax increment financing (TIF) projects in the St. Louis region. He is consistently recognized as one of the top lawyers in his field by numerous publications. Shelley Sylva Director, External Counsel and Knowledge Management TD Bank Shelley Sylva is Associate Vice President, Director External Counsel and Knowledge Management for TD Bank Group. Shelley is responsible for hiring, onboarding and managing all external legal firms that perform legal work on behalf of the bank. In addition Shelley s mandate includes overseeing Legal s strategic technology and process improvement initiatives as well developing Legal s knowledge management capabilities. Shelley joined TD in 2013, as Senior Manager, US Legal Operations and Governance. Shelley serves on the Minorities in Leadership-Employee Resource Group and COLA Diversity Leadership Council. Shelley brings more than 15 years of legal experience and over a decade of Executive Leadership. Shelley was previously Deputy Executive Director of Administration (COO) for the Philadelphia Housing Authority, the 4th largest housing authority in the United States with an annual budget in excess of $360 million dollars. 13

15 Timothy Triplett General Counsel Black & Veatch Timothy W. Triplett serves as General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and President of the Company s Legal, Risk Management and Governmental Affairs Division. Mr. Triplett works actively with the Board of Directors serving in both a legal role, and as management s representative to the Board s Governance & Nominating Committee. His work with this Committee includes on-going Committee activities, including the Board s on-going study of corporate governance best practices. 14

Following graduation from the New York University School of Law in 2001, Adrian joined Latham s San Francisco office as a litigation associate. He practiced litigation for seven years, primarily in the areas of antitrust and securities litigation, and also was extensively involved in Latham s pro bono program. Melanie Green Chief Client Development Officer Faegre Baker Daniels LLP Melanie loves working with lawyers. As chief client development officer, she partners with firm management to guide the direction of Faegre Baker Daniels business development and marketing programs and initiatives. Her team is responsible for media relations, corporate identity and advertising, business development, website, e-marketing, client entertainment and appreciation, contributions and sponsorships, alumni programs and market research. Melanie s goal is to help the firm move from transactional to relational thinking and strategically invest in business development and marketing activities. Melanie is an industry leader on client feedback programs, conducting 15
