2 Message from the Committee Based on the goals and directions of IMIA, the International Medical Informatics Association, it is our privilege to submit recommendations to the General Assembly (GA) for several Board positions for an Honorary Fellow nomination 2

5 Secretary (Officer Position) Lyn Hanmer (South Africa) Dr. Lyn Hanmer has trained as a biomedical engineer and is currently a scientist and Division Manager, Health Informatics, at Medical Research Council in Cape Town, South Africa. She is the IMIA Representative of the South African Health Informatics Association. As Co-Chair of Medinfo 2010 in Cape Town, she significantly contributed to the success to the last World Congress of IMIA. In her first term as Secretary her contributions for IMIA and in particular IMIA s Board where highly appreciated. 5

6 Vice President Membership Michio Kimura (Japan) Michio Kimura, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine at the Department of Medicine, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine. He has contributed significantly to the progress of medical informatics, among others through his contributions in standardization and his membership in standardisation organizations. He is President of the Japanese Association of Medical Informatics, one of IMIA s most active member societies. As President of APAMI he has, among others, contributed to the success of CoMHI 2009 at Hiroshima. 6

7 Vice President Services Christoph Lehmann (USA) Christoph Lehmann, M.D., is Director, Clinical Information Technology, at Johns Hopkins University Children s Medical and Surgical Center, Baltimore, Maryland. He has published many journal papers and books in biomedical and health informatics. As a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Informatics Association, he is an active member in one of IMIA s largest member societies. Dr. Lehmann is editor of Applied Clinical Informatics (ACI), one of IMIA s official journals. 7

8 IMIA Requirements for President IMIA takes in particular the following requirements for nominations for President-Elect into account: The candidate should be an internationally well-known person with high reputation in the field of biomedical and health informatics should be well-established in her/his member society (e.g. as its representative) should have served on the IMIA Board 8

9 President Elect (Officer Position) because of the change of the IMIA statutes in 2010 being effective after this GA meeting Lincoln de Assis Moura (Brazil) Dr. Lincoln de Assis Moura is a well-known and highly respected person in biomedical and health informatics. He has achieved great merits both as a scientist as well as a practitioner in our field. He is for many years active in the Brazilian Health Informatics Society, among others as its President, and has significantly contributed to the successful development of IMIA-LAC. 9

10 President Elect (Officer Position) because of the change of the IMIA statutes in 2010 being effective after this GA meeting Lincoln de Assis Moura (Brazil) He has successfully served on the IMIA Board, currently as its Treasurer. Considering that the Latin American member societies have made considerable progress during the last years and that IMIA has until now had no president from this region, his election would also acknowledge the achievements in this upcoming region. 10

11 Treasurer (Officer Position) In case of the election of Lincoln de Assis Moura as President Elect, the election of a new Treasurer, being effective after the GA meeting in 2012, i.e. for , is necessary. Sabine Koch (Sweden) Sabine Koch, Ph.D., is professor and director of the Health Informatics Centre at Karolinska Institutet at Stockholm, Sweden. As director of this center she is also experienced in financial matters. Dr. Koch is IMIA representative of the Swedish Federation for Medical Informatics. With Sabine Koch, a young scientist with high reputation, there would be another female colleague in the Board. 11

13 Recommendation of Professor William Edward Hammond II for IMIA Honorary Fellow Dr. Hammond is Director, Duke Center for Health Informatics, Durham, NC, USA 13

14 Professor Hammond has been an ambassador for the field of medical informatics for over 44 years. In particular, as a member of AMIA s International Committee, Dr. Hammond has worked internationally throughout the Asia-Pacific region, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Africa spearheading numerous efforts to advance the field of medical informatics. Dr. Hammond has an extensive background in medical informatics having done considerable teaching and research in the area. He has worked tirelessly to advance the development of electronic health records, health data standards, and integrate medical informatics into the domains of biomedical research and clinical care. Dr Hammond has worked across many differing health care organizations, many of the medical specialties and with institutions, healthcare enterprises and regional health care systems throughout the United States and internationally. Professor Hammond is a leader in informatics as exemplified by his work. 14
