Co-Founder and Previous President/CEO of Ocean Nutrition Canada Limited Robert Orr is a serial entrepreneur who is passionate about Atlantic Canada. With a $540 million exit from Ocean Nutrition Canada Ltd. on his portfolio, and current investments in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Panama for environmentally sustainable aquaculture through investing in technologies and platforms, he has unique perspectives on innovation, commercialization, and how Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada fit into the global picture. 11:30 12:00 p.m. Facilitated Discussion: Applying Robert s Perspectives 12:00 1:00 p.m. Networking Lunch 1:00 2:15 p.m. Tour of the Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE) Members will tour the new Dalhousie Ocean Science Building, which is home to the Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE). This new 70,000 square foot building provides state-of-theart laboratory and research facilities, as well as opportunities for industry engagement in ocean research. In addition to IORE, it is currently home to the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Ocean Science and Technology, to MEOPAR (Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network), which is a $25 million nation-wide ocean research network, and to the Ocean Tracking Network, which is a $150+ million global research program using Canadian technology to track fish migration and behavior. The tour will highlight those programs and their associated labs, including the Container Lab, the CERC Ocean Chemistry Lab, and the Aquatron Tank facility, Canada s largest ocean biology wet lab. 2:15 2:30 p.m. Health/Networking Break 2:30 3:45 p.m. Industry/University/Government Collaboration: Ocean Science Commercialization Jim Hanlon, CEO Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE) Jim was hired to lead the IORE given his strong background in industry as an entrepreneur. He was previously a partner in the tech firm MISL that was acquired by Ultra, a large British, publicly traded multinational. He stayed on with Ultra as President of operations in Atlantic Canada, until leaving in February of 2012 to join IORE. He also had a previous exit when selling Seimac Limited to another large British public company called Cobham in His exit and other industry experiences has given him a unique perspective in leading IORE as they seek to build collaborative partnerships among industry, academia, and governments. IORE is a non-profit spin-out from Dalhousie and represents an association of a number of Atlantic Canadian universities, ten companies, and major government institutes (NRCan, Environment Canada, etc), with a goal of pulling together talent in universities, matching it to the needs of private sector, and pulling out innovation that is going on in labs. Stakeholder Engagement 9:15 10:15 a.m. Innovation, Exploration and Development in Newfoundland and Labrador s Offshore Richard Wright, Manager Exploration, Oil and Gas, Nalcor Energy Richard Wright joined Nalcor Energy Oil and Gas in 2009 and presently holds the position of Exploration Manager. His team is responsible for undertaking Nalcor's oil and gas exploration activities to delineate the province's undiscovered oil and gas resources. Before joining Nalcor, Richard worked in the frontier exploration team for Chevron focusing on the Canadian Arctic and offshore Labrador. 5 on a number of oil fields in California, South America, North Sea, Middle East, and Offshore Australia. Richard attended Memorial University of Newfoundland where he attained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and a Ph.D. in Geophysics with a thesis studying 4D seismic at the Hibernia oil field. 10:15 10:30 a.m. Networking/Health Break 10:30 11:30 a.m. Inspiring a Culture of Creation and Innovation Gerry Pond, Co-founder & Chairman East Valley Ventures As Co-Founder of Mariner, Gerry has over 45 years of in-depth experience in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. As the CEO of NBTel and the President of its successor, Aliant Telecom, Gerry was at the helm during a period of significant deregulation in the Canadian industry. Under his leadership, NBTel embarked on a decade of innovation, and in the process transformed NBTel into an international ICT leader. He was the driving force behind the formation of Mariner Partners Inc. and has co-founded a number of successful ICT start-ups in Atlantic Canada including imagictv, Q1 Labs, Brovada Technologies, Radian6, Shift Energy and Cirrus9. As a proven innovator in ICT, Gerry is the Co- Founder of Propel ICT, a start-up accelerator, and East Valley Ventures, an advanced accelerator for Atlantic Canadian start-up companies with a mission of helping passionate Atlantic Canadian entrepreneurs launch meaningful and enduring technology companies. There are currently over 30 companies connected to East Valley Ventures. Designing a personal plan, a team strategy, or an organizational mission all starts from the same place; an inspiring vision of what the future can be. It s the glue that maintains commitment to a defined set of goals, especially as roadblocks and unforeseen circumstances develop. Gerry will walk through his personal story of building this inspiring vision and the commitment required to stay the course to execute on the planned strategy while at the same time having the wisdom and backbone to alter course when circumstances change. 11:30 11:55 a.m. Roundtable Discussion: Extending the Learning Through an interactive roundtable discussion, the Council will identify ways to action what was learned, including follow up items to be considered and addressed at future sessions.
