2 Retailer Merchandising Guide So you've come up with your designs and invested lots of time and money into making your product. How you display your product at the market is just as important as the product itself. It is really important that you take time to think through and plan out your market stall display... much like a retail shop... but on a smaller scale. In a crowded market place its essential that you create an inviting space that will get customers to stop, engage and buy from you. We have developed this Retailer Merchandising Guide to give you ideas and suggestions on what you should consider when designing your space. While this approach does take a bit more time and effort, I m sure you will agree that the results will show in your sales results. A merchandised space doesn t have to cost you a fortune to achieve a great result. Many of the ideas are simple and you can use things that you may already have or take a look on Gumtree or idea for well priced props. We love Pinterest. 3 Top 10 Display Ideas 1 2 Size Before you start planning out your space, confirm the size of the space and make sure your display fits within it. It is always a good idea if you are creating a new display to do mock set up at home before the event and look at it from every perspective. Space You also want to make sure you make best use of your space. Remember the saying, less is more. You want to capture the customer s eye, get them to stop and get them to stay and talk to you. Keep any excess items and storage boxes out of sight. Think about how you can best showcase your work so that it looks similar to how they would see it in real life. You might like to define your space with a rug or flooring to make it feel more like a studio feel. Also consider how you can create different levels and height. 3 Create a story about your brand When a potential customer looks at your brand, what do you want them to think of? Is your brand elegant, sophisticated, rustic, modern, industrial, quirky, vintage, relaxed or something else? Once you define the look for your brand, think about they types of materials, structures and props that may help to convey your brand message.

4 4 Shape You need to consider creating interest at different levels within your space to draw the customers eyes. Tiered levels or containers can help create this and make it easy for your customer to focus on your offering. Grouping of similar products or colours often gives a stronger presence. Signage It needs to be clear, who you are and what you offer within the first 3 seconds. Make sure you have clear visible signage that is consistent with your brand. If you are selling items on the day, ensure everything is clearly labeled and priced. Some customers wont ask if they don t immediately see a price. 5

5 6 Photos of your work You wont have room to show everything that you can do. Consider having framed photos of your best work (professional images) a photo album or even an ipad. 7 Samples or treats Consider drawing customers in with samples of your product/service. For example, mini gelato cones, cheese samples, small cake samples. It s a great way to engage with customers and find out more about them. If you don t have a product to sample, consider offering a treat of some kind and attaching your business card.

6 8 Colour Think about whether you want to have a colour scheme throughout your display. It can be distracting to have too many colours and textures going on. 9 You You are part of your display so dress to reflect the brand image you want to portrait. Dress in keeping with you brand. Where possible, wear your designs... ie clothing, jewellery or consider branded aprons or clothing. Borrow or thrift 10 If you need extra props, why not borrow them from a friend. Also check out Gumtree, IKEA or make your own. Pinterest has thousands of great ideas. Often using things that aren't for their original purpose looks great.
