1 Why You Still Need a By Mark Hutchins MIXER IN YOUR STUDIO Pretend that, through the magic of time travel, you could pluck a studio engineer or musician from 30 years ago and drop him or her into a modern project- or home-studio environment. Once the more pressing questions are answered, you re sure to get this one: Where s the mixer? Questions, Questions You explain the mouse/keyboard/interface relationship to give the befuddled guy or gal some perspective on modern recording setups. Sure, the interface/ converter makes sense as a conduit between analog and digital, and the control surface, with its faders and knobs, at least hints at tactile control to your intrepid new friend. But the questions keep flying fast and furious. Where do you patch in your outboard effects and signal processors? How do you route to different monitors? What if a player is trying to dial in a great sound before going into the recorder? What if you need more preamps than your interface can provide? Where are the flying cars? The Flexibility Factor Though the advent of high-resolution digital recording has brought pro-level production capability to desktop and laptop setups, the hypothetical old-school studio guy points out a flaw that s all too common among modern studio rigs. We ve come to rely on clicks, drags, multiple menus, and virtual worlds inside our computers. The fact is that a mixer is still essential to the studio environment.
