Decluttering The Kids Rooms Rachel Jones
Introduction I have directed these tasks to the children, and really, it applies to anyone, but they are done so you can read them with the kids and then help them as they work on their room. Because children vary SO much in their personalities and what they are willing to do, each child is going to respond differently to different decluttering methods, so I ll give you the task, but it will be up to you to make note of all the different methods and approaches to that task, based on your individual child. I wish I could make it a simple guideline for you and your children, but that s just part of parenting: paying attention to their needs and guiding them accordingly. First off, it s going to help your child immensely if they have very little to pick up. Just like us, when we walk into a clutter filled room, we see everything and it s very difficult to chunk it down into manageable tasks and we re adults. So even when you tell your child to clean their room make it something they can focus on Get rid of 20 items, put away all the blocks, pick up the books, etc. Chunk down the tasks for them, rather than a general clean your room. All the items need to have a home, so I will talk about that in the task sheets, as well. I remember as a kid I had a place mat that had a circle for a plate and shape for the spoon and shape for the fork that s what we re going for. Everything is assigned a place. This makes children s lives easier. I ve seen suggestions to reward children with goodies when they keep their rooms picked up. Of course children like that, but that s not giving them a realistic view of the real world. When we grow up we have to do the dishes so we have clean dishes to eat off of. The reward for us, is simply eating off a clean plate and that should be enough reward. So as you go along when decluttering and cleaning- talk about how you feel. It feels good to have clean dishes. Doesn t it make you feel happy to have a bed made? You can get the children s room done in a week (or a day if you are determined), but there will be work to maintain it. Just like you have to implement routines into your life to maintain a tidy home, the children will have to implement routines to maintain their clean room. The fewer items they have to remember, the easier it will be for them.
For our kids the basic routine is: Morning: r Put away pajamas r Make your bed Evening: r Put all items in their homes r Put away clothes I prefer to keep the chores very minimal I do ask them to help through the day, set the table, clear the table, wash the dishes, etc. But the kids just have to remember to do 2 things in the morning and 2 things in the evening. The main reason I have these tasks directed to the children, is because it s our responsibility, as parents to teach them how to declutter and how to clean these are valuable life skills. So, do this with your children not for them. Doing this will give them the tools they need to maintain their own home. Be respectful. If the child is over 3 don t get rid of things without their permission. If you do, they will feel the need to hide things or hang on tighter to their belongings. Make sure that as you are decluttering, you are not catering to shame or shoulding the children. When you ask them to pick out the things they want to keep, don t tell them if they are right or wrong. I know it s tempting to have them keep the expensive sets, or the ones you think are fun, or something special from a relative if they want to let something go let it go. And often, they will keep things that seem worthless to you and get rid of the nicer items. But it needs to be up to them, not up to you. Be realistic they re kids, most of them will love a clean room, but most do not have the discipline to keep it up without us reminding them everyday. Be as consistent as possible with having them do their routines. Just like routines are what keeps the main part of the house organized and calm the routines of your children will keep their room clean and organized.
Day 1: Bed Hi there! Today, we re going to make the bed. It s nice to sleep in a clean made bed! And it feels good to walk into your own bedroom that has a nice bed in it all cozy and ready to sleep in. First off, you need to decide what you want on your bed. Some people like having lots of blankets and stuffed animals, but then you might not have room for yourself! So you have to decide what number of friends you are going to have on your bed. Make it a small number 1, 2, 3 or 4. Next, decide how many blankets you want on your bed. If you already only have a couple, then just keep them. But if you have 6 or 10 blankets, you need to decide how many blankets you will sleep with. Your parents can help you set the other friends and extra blankets aside somewhere. Now it s time to go and make your bed look really nice. You want to have sheets on the bed, lay your blankets out flat and put your pillow and your stuffed animals or dolls by your pillow. Bed nicely made? Check here r
Day 2: Clothes Today we are going to sort clothes. This is going to be a big job are you ready for it? First off, I need you to get all the clothes out of your room. Gather up everything from off the floor, under the bed, on top of the dresser, in the dresser and in the closet. Everything. Pile all the clothes up in the middle of the floor maybe in your room, the hallway, or the living room. Have 3 boxes ready a keep box, a giveaway box and a trash box. 1. Pick up each piece of clothes. If it has a hole in it throw that away in the trash. We don t want to keep holey underwear or socks! 2. If it s something you don t like, put it in the giveaway box. 3. If it s something that you do like, put it in the keep box. Work on the whole pile until it s all done. 4. Now, you have look at all the clothes you wanted to keep and see how many you have. Decide how many days worth of clothes you should keep. 5. Once you know how many days of clothes you need, pick out that number of outfits. Put them in piles one pile for each day. Pick out the same amount of pajamas and it s good to keep extra socks and underwear. Keep the clothes that you REALLY like and wear a lot. 6. Make sure you hang up any jackets or sweatshirts you need and put the rest into the giveaway box. 7. Fold your clothes up really nice and put them in your dresser, of, if they are dresses, hang them up in your closet. Remember, everything we own needs it s own home and if you can t give it a home, than maybe you should give it away so someone else can give it a home. Clothes sorted and put away? Check here r
Day 3: Books Today we are going to sort through the kid s books. Decide with your parents where the books should be kept if they are in your room, in playroom or living room, wherever you decide, we want all the books to only be in that place. After you ve decided where all the books are going to be stored, you need to get all the kids books from all over the house anywhere they are, make sure you get all of them from the bedroom, bathroom, living room, parent s room, kitchen the whole house. Get all the books and put them in stacks on the floor. Get out 2 boxes a giveaway box and a keep box. Pick up each book and ask yourself if you love it. If you don t, put it in the giveaway box. If you do love it, put it in the keep box. If no one wants to get rid of any books, then you need to decide together how many you should keep. Maybe decide on an amount like 30 or 50 books, or maybe you can decide on only one shelf, so if it doesn t fit on that shelf, then you need to get rid of more. Ask yourselves questions to decide if you really should keep the book that you re holding: 1. Do I read this very much? 2. When was the last time I read it? 3. Why do I want to keep it? After you ve sorted all the books organize them nice and put them in the book place if it s a drawer, a box or a shelf. Set all the books upright so you can get them out easy and look at them. Books simplified! Check here r
Day 4: The Big Sort Today, we re going to sort EVERYTHING in your room well, not the clothes, or the books because you ve already done that. But we re going to sort everything else. First off, think of all the things that belong in a group like Legos, wooden blocks, Lincoln Logs, etc. Get out the boxes or baskets for them and have them ready to sort into. If you don t have containers for them, then either find some boxes or get out some bags so you can put them into their own box or bag. Now, I want you to get all stuff in your room remember not the books and not the clothes, but everything else all the toys, papers, garbage, knick knacks, etc. Pile EVERYTHING in the middle of the floor. Now, take your containers for your category things and start sorting throw the trash and broken toys in the garbage, put the Legos in the Lego box, put the kitchen toys in the kitchen box. If you have toys that don t belong in a set that s ok, leave those on the floor, I just want you to take out all the toys that go in sets. Ok, now you should have all your boxes of categories (sets), right? And a big pile of stuff leftover on floor? For now, I want you to take the category boxes and put them somewhere someplace where we re going to just keep them out of the way until we are finished with this. Look at what is left on the floor, decide how many items you should keep. You can decide if you don t want to keep anything, or maybe you want to pick out 20 things just for you. Ask your parent for your own special box or drawer to hold your own stuff in it. Pick out the things that you love, the toys a special items that make YOU happy. So now, after that, everything that is left on the floor can be put into a giveaway box or trash. When you have all the giveaway stuff ready, help your parents take them out to the car so they can give them away right away. Then, vacuum or sweep your floor so your room is beautiful! The Big Sort completed! Check here r
Day 5: Sorting Categories r Pick up your toys Now that your room is tidy, you ll need to do some routines to keep it that way. So, now when you are going to bed you will need to pick up your toys and put them back into their home. You might have decided to have a couple stuffed animals or friends on your bed, but all your other things, like your toys and your clothes need to be in their home before you go to bed. Today, you ll need to decide some more things. Remember all the boxes or bags of categories you put away last time? Today, I want you to think about them and decide if you really like all of them. Ask yourself if you play with them very much, or if you ve outgrown them and maybe it s not something you really want to use anymore. It s not right or wrong if you want to keep them or get rid of them, I just need you to think about if you want them, and if you do use them. If you have categories that you just don t play with at all and they just make a mess in your room, then you and your parents should get rid of those. So go ahead and sit with your parents today and decide if there are some categories that you should get rid of. When you re done talking about it, go ahead and get those boxes or bags out and take them to the vehicle so you re parents can give them away. Categories Sorted? Check here r
Day 6: Minimalizing Categories r Pick up your toys Today, we re going to sort through the categories that you have decided to keep. This might take a couple days to work through, it depends on the adult that is working with you, so you can all decide if you want to sort one category every day, or one category every weekend, but whatever you decide to do, it needs to be done. Before you get started, make sure that you have all your routines done you made your bed, you put away your clothes and all your toys are put in their home. It s a LOT easier to work on a job, when your room is neat and clean. Then, bring out the first set you are going to sort. If you have a farm set for example, then just pick out animals to keep and give the other animals away. Then when you get out your barn, it s really easy to play with and it s REALLY easy to clean up when it s time for you to put it away. If you have dolls that have a TON of clothes, then you need to pick out your favorite outfits and give the rest of their clothes away. And if you have a whole bunch of dolls, just pick out your favorite 2-3 and give the rest away. Now when it comes to Legos and blocks, if you keep them organized then maybe you can keep the sets in their own special categories, so maybe you ll have a box with the Star Wars Legos and a box with the knights and dragon Legos. You want to keep them separated, so you re not getting down all the Legos at a time. If they are not organized, then just keep a small box of Legos that is easy to reach and once in awhile maybe your parents will get down the big box to sort through. After all the categories are sorted out. Your parents can decide where they want to store them. These are toys that can be rotated so you have only one category out at a time. And you make sure it s all cleaned up and put back into it s box before you can ask for another one. Categories minimalized! Check here r
