Teaching Kids to Program Lesson Plan: Interactive Holiday Card
Step 1: 1. Open your web browser and go to SCRATCH ( ) 2. Sign in to your Scratch account by clicking on the button on the top right hand corner of your screen. 3. Click on the Create button to start a new project. Step 2: Name your project. Type the name of your project in the box. Step 3: What images and sounds come to mind when you think about your favourite holiday memories? Think about the type of card you would like to design. Combine interesting images and sounds to create an interactive holiday card that you can send to someone you care about. Step 4: Delete the cat sprite: We can do the following to delete the cat sprite: 1. Click on the scissors then click on the cat sprite. OR 2. Right click on the cat sprite and select the delete option. Step 5: Add sprites to your holiday card. For our card we will use any sprite from the library. There are four ways to add sprites to your program: 1. Library: Choose a sprite from the sprite library by clicking on the library button : 2. Paint: Draw your own sprite in the paint editor by clicking on the paint button : 3. Computer: Upload an image from your computer by clicking on the computer button : 4. Camera: Take a picture (if you have a webcam) by clicking on the camera button : Page 1 of 5
Step 6: We will now bring our sprites to life by adding instructions (a.k.a. computer code) that will tell our sprites what to do. Some ideas we can use are: 1. We can get our sprites moving with blocks from the palette. We can try these blocks from the, and palettes to make our sprite dance back and forth: 2. We can get our sprite to say something with blocks from the palette. We can try these blocks from the and palettes to have one of our sprites share holiday greetings when it is clicked: 3. We can add sounds to the holiday card by doing the following: To add sound, click on the Sounds tab. Page 2 of 5
We can add a sound by: 1. Using sounds from the Scratch library by clicking on, 2. Uploading sounds from our computer by clicking 3. Recording your own sounds with a microphone by clicking We can experiment with some of the sound-related blocks located in the add music and sound to your sprite: palette to 4. We can play with the images in the holiday card by using the graphic effects blocks from the palette : We can add these blocks from the,, and palettes to add a colourful effect to a dancing sprite: Page 3 of 5
5. Our sprites can have different costumes (visuals). We can add costumes to our sprite by clicking on the Costumes tab: We can then repeat Step 3 to add our costumes. We can switch between costumes by from the block. palette using the switch costume Step 7: We will now add a background image to the card. 1. To add a background image click on the Stage: For our card we will use any background from the library. There are four ways to add a backdrop to your program: 1. Library: Choose a backdrop from the backdrop library by clicking on the library button : 2. Paint: Draw your own backdrop in the paint editor by clicking on the paint button : 3. Computer: Upload an image from your computer by clicking on the computer button : 4. Camera: Take a picture (if you have a webcam) by clicking on the camera button : Page 4 of 5
Step 8: How will people learn to interact with your holiday card? Give help by adding instructions that appears when someone plays your card. Our projects starts when the green flag is clicked. Try adding these blocks from the and palettes to explain what the viewer should do: Step 9: Save your project. To save your project, click on the button on the top right hand corner of your screen. Other options: You can share your project with the community by clicking on the button on the top right hand corner of your screen. You can also view your project page as it will be seen by the community. You can do this by clicking on the button on the top right hand corner of your screen. Step 10: Explore! Think about ways to expand on your card. Page 5 of 5
