2 Test Section 1.0 Finding The Listen to the chord sequences and try to find the root note (key) of the extract: If you found this difficult you can use any other backing track to continue testing yourself until you feel confident.
3 Test Section 2.0 Notes In The Major Scale Find the notes in each of these major scales using the following rules: You must have one of every letter between A and G in alphabetical order Never miss out any letters Never mix sharps and flats in a key Find out the sharps and flats by using intervals T T S (T) T T S Complete your answers using the table below: (root) T T S T T T S C D E F G A B C F Bb G F# D Bb Eb A E Ab B Db
4 Test Section 3.0 Hearing Intervals (Ascending) Test Section 3.1 Listen to the eight ascending intervals which will each be played twice on the piano. Name each interval accurately as possible Test Section 3.2 Listen to the next eight ascending intervals which will each be played twice on the piano. Again, name each interval accurately as possible
5 Test Section 4.0 Hearing Intervals (Descending) Test Section 4.1 Listen to the eight descending intervals which will each be played twice on the piano. Name each interval accurately as possible Test Section 4.2 Listen to the next eight descending intervals which will each be played twice on the piano. Again, name each interval accurately as possible
6 Test Section 5.0 Hearing Intervals (Ascending & Descending) Test Section 5.1 Listen to the eight ascending intervals which will each be played twice on the piano. Name each interval as accurately as you can (e.g. major 2nd, Perfect 4th etc.). You should initially concentrate on naming the intercal (e.g. 2nd, 4th etc.) and then, if you can, work out which variety of interval it is (i.e. major/minor, perfect/ augmented): Test Section 5.2 Once again, listen to the eight ascending intervals played twice each try to name them as accurately as you can. This time they are played on the bass:
7 Test Section 5.3 This time listen to the twelve ascending intervals which will each be played twice. Once again, try to name them as accurately as you can. These intervals are played at different pitches and on different instruments: Test Section 5.4 This test comprises of eight descending intervals played on the piano. Try to identify them as accurately as you can. Each interval will be played twice:
8 Test Section 5.5 Listen to these eight descending intervals played on the bass. Try to identify them as accurately as you can. Each interval will be played twice: Test Section 5.6 This time you will hear twelve descending intervals, each played twice, at different pitches. Identify them as accurately as you can:
9 Test Section 5.7 This test combines all of the previous Hearing Intervals tests (Test Sections ). You will hear twenty intervals which will be played twice each. These may be ascending or descending and will be at a variety of pitch levels. Try to identify each one as accurately as you can:
10 Test Section 6.0 Finding The Notes In Major And Minor Chords Using your knowledge of how to form major and minor chords work out the notes in each of the following chords: Chord Root 3 rd 5 th Cm D G A Eb Bbm Em F F#m Gm B Bm Ab Dm Fm
11 Test Section 7.0 Hearing Major And Minor Chords Listen to the series of chords (once each). Identify whether they are major (maj) or minor (min):
12 Test Section 8.0 Finding Chords In The Use the numbering system to identify the following chords. Be as precise as you can: Answer E 4 D 2 G 5 F 3 Bb 6 G 1 A 4 E 5 G 2 C 6 D 3 F 4 Bb 2 A 6 Eb 3 F 5 G 7 B 5 Ab 3
13 Test Section 9.0 Transcribing Simple Sequences Listen to the repeating chord sequences. They will start simple (using chords 1,4 and 5) and gradually add more chords. Try to identify the chord numbers (using either numbers or roman numerals): 9.1 D Major 1 (I) Chord D Chord 9.2 D Major Chord 9.3 G Major Chord

16 Test Section 10.0 Hearing Inversions Listen to the fifteen chords being played Some of them are played in root position whilst some of them are played in first inversion (with the 3 rd of the chord in the bass). Check the chords which are played in a 1 st inversion: 10.1 G 10.9 A 10.2 C Em 10.3 D F 10.4 Eb C 10.5 A Am 10.6 Dm E 10.7 Bb Cm 10.8 Gm
17 Test Section 11.0 Transcribing Longer Chord Sequences Listen to the seven repeating chord sequences. Try to identify the key, chords and chord numbers (using either numbers or roman numerals). 19 Test Section 12.0 Transcribing A Song Listen to the song Consuming Fire and transcribe the chords into the chart on the next page. We ve given you a head start by marking out each section of the song. One box represents one bar of music so the intro has 4 bars, the chorus 10 bars etc. As per the course we d recommend you start by working out the key and marking its seven chords before you start. (Hint: the easiest place to find the root chord is in the chorus)

21 Test Section 13.0 Transposing A Song Using Nashville Numbering Into 3 s In Test Section 12.0 you should have transcribed the song Consuming Fire. For this test look back at the completed chart and transpose the song into the keys of: D E Bb Put your answers in the following three charts. Hint if you haven t already done so, mark the Nashville numbers of the chords on your chart next to each chord in each section.
