1 DISCLOSURE STATEMENT Guitar Class/Mr. Griffey August 20, 2013 The beginning guitar class is designed to teach the basics of acoustic guitar styles. Students will learn basic open chords, strumming, and flat picking. Students will also learn basic music theory, how to read music, and basic guitar care. In addition, students will be exposed to various genres of music. Daily practice is essential for students to become proficient at reading music and playing their instrument. Practicing 20 minutes each day is better then practicing two hours every four days. Please set aside at least 20 minutes every evening for practice. Students are expected to have a guitar and a guitar book by August 26, Daily points will be deducted for students who show up unprepared after that. OBJECTIVES -Build self-discipline/self-confidence -Practice performance skills -Tune guitar strings -Experience the fun of making music DAILY EXPECTATIONS Arrive to class on time with an acoustic guitar and music book. Students will be expected to follow directions first time given. Students are also expected to be respectful and bring a positive attitude to class. All students have a right to learn and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Be prepared to participate! CONCERT PARTICIPATION Concert performances are part of the class curriculum. They are not extra-curricular events. They are quarterly finals. For this reason, attendance at the concert is mandatory. ONLY A PHONE CALL TO ME FROM A PARENT BEFORE THE CONCERT CONCERNING A DEATH, SEVERE ILLNESS, OR EXTREME FAMILY EMERGENCY ARE CONDITIONS FOR NOT ATTENDING. Please mark this date on your calendar. If a student s parent or guardian contacts the teacher about an unavoidable absence prior to or immediately after the absence, the student will receive an opportunity to make-up points that were lost. Concerts are worth 200 points and are added to the student s grade after the performance. Contact info (School: , rgriffey@wsd.net) Please call me the day of the concert if an emergency occurs and let me know if you won t be there! CONCERT DATE Winter Concert: Monday December 16, :00-8:00 PM RHS Auditorium GRADE BREAKDOWN Grades will be determined by the following percentage of possible points per quarter. The number of points possible will vary with the number of playing tests, quizzes, assignments, performances, and class participation. A = % C = 68-72% A- = 90-92% C- = 63-67% B+ = 87-89% D+ = 60-62% B = 80-86% D = 54-59% B- = 76-79% D- = 50-53% C+ = 73-75% F = 49% and below

2 BAND PARTICIPATION FEE The Weber School Board of Education requires a participation fee for Jr. High students who participate in performing arts classes. Students in band will pay $15.00 for the year. Students may pay the fee at registration or in the main office during the first week of school. SCHOOL/CLASS TARDY POLICY Students are allowed three tardies per quarter. 4 th Tardy - Citizenship dropped to N 5 th Tardy Citizenship dropped to U SUBSTITUTE POLICY A substitute will be necessary at times throughout the year. I expect students to behave appropriately by following school and classroom rules and policies. Anything less than exemplary behavior will result in the student receiving an unsatisfactory citizenship grade for the quarter. PRACTICE REPORTS I expect each student to practice at least 20 minutes a night, five days a week. Practice needs to be from their classroom book. I will give 1 point of credit for every 10 minutes practiced for a total of 10 points possible per week. You can create your own form or download a form from my blog. 100 minutes - 10 points 60 minutes - 6 points 20 minutes - 2 points 90 minutes - 9 points 50 minutes - 5 points 10 minutes - 1 point 80 minutes - 8 points 40 minutes - 4 points 70 minutes - 7 points 30 minutes - 3 points Practice reports are due each Monday and must be filled out completely and signed by a parent or guardian. ** I will accept practice reports up until Friday of the same week. That gives you a 5 day grace period. After that, it is too late. Make sure you get them in on time. TERM PROJECTS First Quarter- Students will be required to create a Bio Board on a famous Guitarist. Instructions are attached to this disclosure. Second Quarter- Students will be required to attend and perform at the band concert on Monday December 16, Concert participation is required. CLASS RULES -Bring guitar and music book everyday prepared to rehearse. -Bring pencil everyday. No pens! -Gum, candy, pop, and food are not allowed in the classroom. -Play your guitar only when directed to do so by band teacher. SUPPLIES Acoustic Guitar (No Electric Guitars)! 3 FILM (VIDEO) USE FOR INSTRUCTION The Weber School District Board policy on video usage prohibits films (that don t include public performance rights) to be shown for reasons other than instructional purposes under the fair use provision of the copyright law. Films shown in junior high schools must be rated G. A PG rated film may be shown with parent and building administrator approval. All films shown in Guitar class will be used to augment instruction; be correlated to instructional objectives; include relevant activities in addition to viewing the film or film segments (discussion, worksheet, etc.). Students will be accountable for actively viewing the film and any accompanying activities and assignments (i.e. worksheets, discussion, etc.). Live concerts will be shown to expose your student to different genres of music and hopefully inspire them to practice as well. As stated above, PG rated films may only be shown in junior high with administrator and parent approval. Please sign the accompanying permission slip if you are willing to allow your student to view a P.G. rated film at some time during the school year in guitar class. The use of videos during the guitar class period will be very limited and applied only when it will make a positive impact to achieve instructional objectives. Any film chosen for viewing in class will be screened in advance to avoid possible objectionable language or inappropriate scenes. SIGN OTHER SIDE AND RETURN!!!
