Composing in mixed metre/odd time signatures. Being able to recognize and identify the Phrygian scale in modern pop music. Being able to decipher complex rhythm patterns.

3 Rationale: Music 1 + Music 2: Flamenco is a very useful topic to study in both music 1 and Music 2, as it is a good introduction to music from non western cultures. It allows students to understand the social and cultural aspects of the music through musicology studies and performance activities. These experiences allow students to understand the harmonic characteristics of the Flamenco style with the flat 2 nd interval giving an identifiable Spanish flavor. The unit expands the student s knowledge of the concepts of music by expanding their idea of pitch from major and minor, into an ability to identify the flat 2 nd interval, and the Phrygian mode and duration by exposing them to mixed metre and unusual flamenco time signatures. The use of flamenco guitar as the focus in the unit gives students who play the guitar additional options for their repertoire and exposes those who don t play guitar exposure to modes and unusual time signatures. By studying music from other cultures apart from their own students will be more prepared for using the concepts of music to describe any unusual musical examples in the HSC aural tests. 3 selected songs for study: Solea Traditional David Bowie Man who sold the World. Lole y Manuel Tu Mira.
