Chapter 1 : Development of Rock 'n' Roll by Adir Baxi on Prezi Rock 'n' Roll came from the United State in the early to mids. It was a composite of different types of music. In, singer Fats Domino recorded several tracks for Imperial Records, including "The Fat Man," a rhythm and blues track that is today regarded by some as the first rock and roll record. Rock represents the point where white and black music blended together. Blues was a major influence on Elvis Presley, and country music had a profound impact on Chuck Berry. Rhythm-and-Blues Rhythm-and-blues was one of the most significant influences on rock music. Rhythm-and-blues produced a number of stars who had a direct influence on the early pioneers of rock music. Louis Jordan had 18 number one records between and Fats Domino had 59 singles on the rhythm-and-blues charts, and his crossover appeal to white audiences made him one of the first rock stars. Blues Blues was another major influence on rock music. The vocal and guitar styles were substantially different. The rhythm-and-blues singers and bands had a significant jazz and swing element that was influenced by the big band tradition. The Delta blues usually centered around one or two guitars, often played with a very percussive style, and a harmonica. Delta players often used a slide to play "bottleneck" guitar. Muddy Waters transformed Mississippi blues into cranked-up electric Chicago blues. He had a number one hit with "Hoochie Coochie Man" in Rockabilly is a blend of country and hillbilly music with blues and rhythm-and-blues. Gospel music, both white Southern gospel and black gospel, was another essential ingredient. Les Paul Les Paul had one of the strongest impacts on the development of rock music. Les Paul built one of the first solid body electric guitars, he incorporated jazz guitar and country guitar licks in his playing and he was the leading pioneer in recording studio technology. All of these elements had significant influences on rock music and on rock guitarists in particular. The Gibson Les Paul guitar is one of the iconic guitars of rock music. He holds a Ph. Russell travels with his laptop and writes many of his articles on the road between gigs. Page 1

Chapter 2 : ROCK AND ROLL The Impact of the Electric Guitar at Music Industry Rock and Roll can be defined as a new wave of music, which later grew into what we call today "Rock Music." Since the s, rock and roll has changed drastically. During the s, rock and roll really started to pop up in the music industry. Rock and Roll became the most popular music in the twentieth century. It made such a bigger impact on American society because the music was being used in motion pictures and on television. Rock and Roll introduced us to a new innovative sound that was never heard before in music. For the very first time electric guitars were amplified through loudspeakers. The amplifier eventually replaced the acoustic soundbox of the guitar. This was huge because the electric guitar had unlimited power. Think about going to a concert today to see Metallica today and you could not hear the loud guitar playing in the background. I could not imagine not hearing Metallica play as loud as they do at live events could you? Anyway, the power chords of the electric guitar became the trademark of rock n roll. The guitar sound made rock recordings different than jazz music. Imagine hearing an echo on all rock and roll records. I feel that music would not be what it is today if we did not have the electric guitar. All my favorite bands today use a guitar and at some of the concerts I went to they play solo acts that got a standing ovation. The reason why I choose to do this reading is because I attended the rock and roll hall of fame last October. The experience I remember most was Jeff Beck playing his electric guitar for about 45 minutes as a soloist. He was so amazing and got a standing ovation before leaving the stage. What made Jeff Beck so good on stage? Jeff Beck was able to change the beats while playing the guitar. He said that he played specific beats to get the right tune. I never knew that electric guitarist use specific beats to play the guitar. I always thought a guitarist would just play really fast to impress the crowd. That night I learned a lot about how the electric guitar is suppose to be play and I wanted to share my experience with the class. I experienced an epic event and wanted to know the history of recorded sound of the electric guitar. It in fact was once a enjoyment account it. Glance complicated to more introduced agreeable from you! However, how could we communicate? Page 2

Chapter 3 : Origins of rock and roll - Wikipedia The Rock'n'Roll helped to build a bridge between the black and white racial barriers among the teenagers. It was also the start of the 'Youth Revolution', to separate teenagers from the adults. Elvis Presley in a promotion shot for Jailhouse Rock in "Rockabilly" usually but not exclusively refers to the type of rock and roll music which was played and recorded in the mids primarily by white singers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis, who drew mainly on the country roots of the music. His style of music combined with black influences created controversy during a turbulent time in history but that did not stop them from creating what we call Rock n Roll. Although only a minor hit when first released, when used in the opening sequence of the movie Blackboard Jungle a year later, it set the rock and roll boom in motion. If everything that came before laid the groundwork, "Rock Around the Clock" introduced the music to a global audience. Later rockabilly acts, particularly performing songwriters like Buddy Holly, would be a major influence on British Invasion acts and particularly on the song writing of the Beatles and through them on the nature of later rock music. Doo wop Doo wop was one of the most popular forms of s rhythm and blues, often compared with rock and roll, with an emphasis on multi-part vocal harmonies and meaningless backing lyrics from which the genre later gained its name, which were usually supported with light instrumentation. Exceptions included the Platters, with songs including " The Great Pretender " [62] and the Coasters with humorous songs like " Yakety Yak ", [63] both of which ranked among the most successful rock and roll acts of the era. Cover version Many of the earliest white rock and roll hits were covers or partial re-writes of earlier black rhythm and blues or blues songs. Songwriting credits were often unreliable; many publishers, record executives, and even managers both white and black would insert their name as composer in order to collect royalty checks. Rock and roller Little Richard performing in Covers were customary in the music industry at the time; it was made particularly easy by the compulsory license provision of United States copyright law still in effect. The more familiar sound of these covers may have been more palatable to white audiences, there may have been an element of prejudice, but labels aimed at the white market also had much better distribution networks and were generally much more profitable. Buddy Holly and his band, the Crickets. Some commentators have suggested a decline of rock and roll in the late s and early s. Marketing frequently emphasized the physical looks of the artist rather than the music, contributing to the successful careers of Rick Nelson, Tommy Sands, Bobby Vee and the Philadelphia trio of Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian, who all became "teen idols. British rock and roll In the s, Britain was well placed to receive American rock and roll music and culture. Social effects of rock music Rock and roll influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and language. The lyrics of rock and roll songs described events and conflicts that most listeners could relate to through personal experience. Topics such as sex that had generally been considered taboo began to appear in rock and roll lyrics. This new music tried to break boundaries and express emotions that people were actually feeling but had not talked about. An awakening began to take place in American youth culture. Supreme Court ruling that abolished the policy of " separate but equal " in, but leaving a policy which would be extremely difficult to enforce in parts of the United States. The youth culture exemplified by rock and roll was a recurring source of concern for older generations, who worried about juvenile delinquency and social rebellion, particularly because to a large extent rock and roll culture was shared by different racial and social groups. Teenagers found the syncopated backbeat rhythm especially suited to reviving Big Band-era jitterbug dancing. Page 3

Chapter 4 : Rock and Roll History Rock and roll, also called rock 'n' roll or rock & roll, style of popular music that originated in the United States in the mids and that evolved by the mids into the more encompassing international style known as rock music, though the latter also continued to be known as rock and roll. Article from Education Department, Saatchi Gallery Contemporary Art in London It is hard to believe, but there was once a time when there was no rock music. Most historians trace the beginning rock back to the year, when a new type of music, then called Rock and Roll, appeared and revolutionized musical tastes, at least among young people, and pretty much changed the world. This new music, of course did not develop in a vacuum, but resulted from the convergence of two musical styles, Rhythm and Blues and Country, as well as a series of technological developments that created a new market for music. Like Jazz, Rhythm and Blues developed from the music called the Blues. The Blues, to review what you have already learned in the Jazz unit, "grew out of African spirituals and work songs sung by African-Americans in the South. Many of these people had been brought to the United States as slaves, and before the Civil war they labored in difficult situations on the Southern plantations. Couples dancing at jittteburg and vintage photography While music was developing, technology was also changing. Stereo had not yet been invented. Record companies marketed music to adults and radio stations played music that would appeal to the entire family. The advantage of the new technology was that more musical information could be put on a record, and it was of higher technical quality. These, as you might guess, were called singles. Also during this period, the "transistor radio" was invented and became popular. Car radios were also becoming more popular, and more people were listening to the radio while driving. For a long time, the radio was an expensive option in a car. It is hard to imagine a car without a radio today, just as sometime in the not to distant future, it will be hard to imagine a car without a telephone. Radio stations began to program their music to fit the demographics of a new audience. This all meant that some radio stations played music for adults and some stations played music for the teens. Not surprisingly, young people were tired of the music their parents listened to and they started to look for something new. The white teens of the major metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles began to turn to the stations that played music they had never heard before. This music, was of course, familiar to the black population in America, but was brand new for many whites. Music became a consuption good for tue hew generation available for listening at their rooms or take to parties. These influences combined in a simple, blues-based song structure that was fast, sexy, catchy and could be danced to easily and with excitement. These qualities, along with the fact that it horrified adults in general and parents in particular, caused Rock and Roll to become immensely popular with teenagers, who then, for the first time had their own music. We recommend to visit Saatchi Education article on the subject: Page 4

Chapter 5 : The Roots of Rock & Roll Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Indeed, when considering the development of rock 'n' roll music, Longhurst notes that 'the development of rock 'n' roll in the s is often presented as a kind of liberation from the dullness of American and British life of the period.' (). Popularized by disc jockey Alan Freed in, the term "rock and roll" came to be used to describe a new form of music, steeped in the blues, rhythm and blues, country, and gospel. Teenagers fell in love with this new sound, listening to it on transistor radios and buying it in record stores. Many parents believed that this music was simply noise that had a negative influence on impressionable teens. Either way, it became clear that rock and roll was here to stay, bringing with it important changes. Examine the impact of rock and roll, and explore how the birth of this new music influenced and was influenced by technology, teen culture, race, and geography. Objectives Students will be able to: Evaluate the significance of the birth of rock and roll in s America. Identify key musicians that helped shape the sounds and style of early rock and roll. Give examples of how the birth of rock and roll influenced and was influenced by technology, teen culture, race, and geography. A seven-inch phonograph record played at 45 revolutions per minute r. A body of learned human knowledge, belief, and behavior; shared values and attitudes, customs, and styles for living Deejay: A money-operated phonograph or compact disk player, equipped with pushbuttons for the selection of particular recordings Juvenile delinquency: Conduct by a juvenile characterized by antisocial behavior that is beyond parental control and subject to legal action; many linked juvenile delinquency to rock and roll and those who listened to it. A dominating, widespread, or prevailing viewpoint or influence often projected to be an overall "norm" for a community or society Musical style: A broad term for music that appeals to large numbers or whole communities of people and may often be sold on recordings or sheet music Racial segregation: Separation of racial groups by law and custom, which restricted the access of black Americans to jobs, schools, neighborhoods, stores, etc. The timing of sound in musical patterns, such as pulses, beats, etc. A style of upbeat popular music blending big band swing and blues that attracted large numbers of African American audiences after World War II, in the mids through the s; a root of rock and roll Rock and roll: African American slang dating back to the early twentieth century; in the early s, the term came to be used to describe a new form of music, steeped in the blues, rhythm and blues, country, and gospel. Today, it refers to a wide variety of popular music. A small residential community established outside of a city; post World War II, families often fled cities to the safety and comfort of suburban areas. Neither urban nor rural, suburban towns were a compromise between the two extremes. An individual between the ages of thirteen and nineteen also known as an adolescent ; teenagers shaped popular culture in the s by rebelling against the tastes of the older generations. Customs, beliefs, or practices valued by one generation and taught to the next Transistor radio: Small, portable radio popular among teenagers in the s that allowed them to listen to whatever music that they wanted whenever they wanted Lesson Activities Technology and Society This activity is designed to hone research and analysis skills. In this class, students are asked to consider the implications of technology in the birth and growth of rock and roll in the s. The Evolution of Audio Technology. For example, students may choose to research the transistor radio, stereo system, eight track machine, the Walkman, and the ipod. Who developed each one of these innovations? How did they change and evolve and why? How did consumers respond to them? How did these innovations change the way musicians approach the act of making and recording music? And how did this change how audiences listened to music? Why was there a need for new and different technology? Finally, have students predict what future listening technology might involve. How might it be different from contemporary devices? How might we interact with it? What could be its advantages and disadvantages? When do you think this technology will become reality? Have students read the quotes below. Ask them to identify whether they think each quote refers to music in the early days when rock and roll first emerged or in later years when heavy metal and hip-hop became popular. Continue the exercise by having students try to match each quote to its source. Finally, discuss with students the controversies that have surrounded rock and roll since its inception. Encourage them to share personal experiences they or their parents may have encountered regarding their own music choices. If one of the current heroes is announced. Page 5

This is a very, very professional style of music. It means a great deal to many millions of people. We treat [our] music with respect. Judas Priest and the Scorpions," Musician, September "You had to know where [everyone] was gonna be playing. To the rest of the world they were very little radio stations that came in staticky and the show was on in the middle of the night, but you were in the know and things were really exciting. Someone needs to take it and blow it up, give it the respect it deserves. I do not intend to marginalize them or demean them. Rather I take responsibility for trying to understand what they are saying. I want to embrace them and transform them. I just think we should stop pretending we are hearing them for the first time. Have students research important African American artists who were crucial to the development of early rock and roll. Ask students to design a concert poster advertising a performance in the s. Examples of vintage concert posters can be found online. Students should consider the following: Who is the headliner and who is the opening act? When is the concert and where? What is the venue of the concert? What are some major hits by their chosen artists? Students should remember the climate of the times when making their decisions i. Rock and Roll Landmarks As rock and roll became a national phenomenon, many cities across the country became key to its development and expansion. Many of these were discussed in class. They should be prepared to defend their choices with solid evidence given their research. The class can then vote on 3â 5 sites that should be designated as historic rock-and-roll landmarks.
