1 G U I T A R lessons and ideas PRACTICE JOURNAL NAME telephone: richard@deyn.co.uk copyright R. Deyn 2014
2 Using Your Journal Preparation Before you begin each new journey, get clear on the REASONS for playing. Each page in this journal is a standard practice page apart from the first page. Compete this page before you begin. It will help you gain clarity, better understand yourself and make sure your are driven to play rather than feeling pushed! Do not underestimate the power of this exercise. At the end of the Journal, you will find useful pages you may wish to print out and use. Practice Each page is a standard template for you to use and to help you gain momentum and stay focused on your goals. The reason people achieve where others don t is very simple - they practice regularly! This doesn t mean they practice endlessly each day, it simply means they do little and often with the occasional longer session for good measure. The successful people (at whatever they put their mind to), are also the folks who have a clear understanding of their goals so please ensure you spend some considered time completing the first page of this journal. Other advice Humans are like plants - we are either growing or dying! This means that if we are not expanding ourselves with personal development, we become stagnant, uninspired and bored with life. Equally, if we push our own boundaries and try new things, we flourish a learn more exciting things about ourselves every day! There are a few things you can do to improve your playing and step outside your comfort zone. 1. Practice regularly. Aim for at least 4 days a week and sessions of at least 15 minutes 2. Practice the songs and music that inspire you. Most of us believe that practice must be a test of endurance. This is not the case - make a list of what you love to listen to and let this be your wish list of songs to learn. 3. Play along to the original track. When you can play a new song, put on the CD and play along. This is the true measure of your initial understanding of the song and your sense of timing. Such a simple yet overlooked part of playing. 4. Jam with other player at least once a month. You heard me - get out there! 5. Perform in public twice a year. This is likely the most uncomfortable of the ideas here but the one that will give you the biggest boost to your playing. RICHARD DEYN!
3 My Ultimate Guitar Dream Name Date Please answer as honestly and thoroughly as you can. Use a separate sheet in necessary Understanding yourself is the first step towards self expression... Your life is a mirror of your consistant thoughts - so make sure that you focus on the things you want rather than the things you don t! - Anthony Robbins Why are these goals, ambitions so important to you what would it mean to you to reach these goals How will you feel, how will it affect your life, relationships, self belief, confidence, stress levels, etc. Have fun and be creative with your answer these answers will help pull you through any moments of frustration and potential turning points you may find challenging! Write down between 3 and 6 songs/pieces that you woudl like to play or that best represent your goals: What are your plans to continue playing the guitar once you have reached your goals/songs are completed? Any additional comments, feelings or thoughts before starting the Guitar? Any other Goals or Dreams you want to write down and document relating to your self expression and sharing who you truly are?
