Rules HO 1 CAN I CHEW GUM IN CLASS? AND OTHER COMMON QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK Directions: Answer the following questions and write down you answers. Be sure and write down the rule that applies to each situation. Questions Asked By Students Answers I Found, Including Restrictions or Conditions 1. Can I chew gum in English class? Why/why not? 2. Can I have my cell phone in class? 3. What happens if I am caught sending a text message during class (because sometimes I just HAVE to respond to my girlfriend s text or she ll think I m ignoring her and get all crazy weird on me!)? 4. When is it OK to use my cell phone, because I will *totally* die if I can t use it!? 5. Can I use the restroom during class cuz this is normally the time I like to meet with my homies at the drinking fountain each day? 6. What do I need to bring to class each day? I mean, am I going to need to start doing back exercises just so I don t strain my back carrying a bunch of books or what!? 7. I forgot to bring the required materials to class. Now what do I do? 8. Yo, I ll be dismissed from school early on Friday for football and will miss English class (darn!). What am I supposed to do?
Rules HO 2 9. I missed class this morning for an ortho appointment. I think we had a quiz! What do I do? 10. I got sick in P.E. class after running the mile and went home early. (I didn t KNOW we were going to run when I ate the 5 slices of pizza beforehand!) What do I do about my English paper that is due tomorrow? 11. Instead of typing my paper in class, I typed it at home. I m trying to print it & my printer is out of ink. It s due tomorrow & I know you will be upset if it s not done at the beginning of class. What do I do? 12. I thought for sure my mom was going to call in for me yesterday when I decided to sleep all day & not go to school. But now all of a sudden I have to grow up and be more responsible. Will I get to make up the journal writing assignment & test we had in English class? 13. OMG, I totally forgot about the homework assignment due today!! I ll just copy my friend s during free reading/journal time. Besides, what s the worse that can happen? 14. I completely forgot to turn in my essay. Oh well, it s only been a week and a half. I can still turn it in, right? 15. I HATE to read! I ve decided not to read this stupid book you assigned. You can t make me read one single word of it. You can t punish me for that, can you?
Rules HO My best friend and her boyfriend just broke up in the hallway. I must get all the details from her, so I decide to ask her very quietly during our silent reading & writing time. We won t be punished for this, will we? 17. Excuse me, but I cannot wake up in the morning unless I have my French Vanilla Cappuccino from Diamond Expresso. It s 8:15 A.M., and I still have ¾ left in my cup as I head to my locker. What s wrong with that? 18. I just downloaded this new song from Jason Derulo because he is sooo H-O-T! I can listen to my ipod in class, right!? 19. It s my 16th birthday & I really want to bring everyone in English class cupcakes! Can I? 20. Dude. I got some killer jeans at the mall this weekend with my detasselling money. Ya, all the girls will be able to see my sweet Bud Light boxers cuz they hang so low. What do you mean I can t wear them? Why not, man? 21. So, I m telling the class about this book I read & really liked. One of my classmates blurts out, That book is so retarded! and another one chirps in, Ya, it s so gay! Are they going to be punished?
Rules HO Getting up during class is so lame. This is supposed to be English, not P.E. So what s wrong with me just sticking the newspaper and my English folder under the desk everyday? I mean, seriously, is it that big of a deal? 23. I heard from someone in the other class that one of my so-called friends totally wrote a bunch of crap about me in her journal. I know you won t notice if I grab her journal & read it. And who cares, anyway? I mean, I have every right to read it if it s about me, don t I??? 24. I can t stop thinking about my boyfriend! I love him sooooooo much! I can t wait until after class so I can give him a kiss on his beautiful lips! Why are you giving me that look? What s wrong with kissing my boyfriend as long as it s in the hallway & not during class??? 25. I can t believe you kicked me out of class for giving my classmate a wedgie. It was so funny, and everyone laughed. I thought humor was allowed in class! What did I do wrong? And why are you so mad that I stopped off at library to tell my friends before I went to the office? They thought it was funny, too! 26. You said we could read whatever we want during free reading time and now you re taking away my Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue! What is up wit dat!?
Rules HO I m really offended by the language and adult content in this novel. Can I read a different novel instead? 28. My dad is really ticked off that you assigned homework the night of a big game. How can he get ahold of you to give you a piece of his mind? 29. I really don t get this assignment. When could I come in for some extra help? 30. Why do I have to take this class? When will I ever need to use this in the real world?
