1 May 2017 CROSSFIT MONCTON Monthly Newsletter Why Having to Start Over AGAIN Is Great I received an a few months back from a NF reader that made me smile: I am going back to square one. I noticed the only habit that I changed and stuck with was drinking tons of water. Have you ever started playing a game and get a few hours in and go man I wish I knew these controls/tips from the beginning? So you restart and the game just feels easier from that point on. You start finding items that you missed before. I m restarting my journey now that I have a better idea of the controls. This resonated with me, because when I first played EverQuest (similar to World of Warcraft), the first character I created was terrible. It took me forever to level up, I assigned my stat points poorly, I died frequently, and I slowly crawled my way up to the more difficult challenges When I started again playing as a new character, I FLEW through the first 30 levels: I understood the controls, how the game worked, and what needed to get done; it was much easier the second time through! The same is true for any boss battle you first encounter in any game. You struggle to learn the patterns, you lose most of your health, but then you crack the code. When you face that boss again later, you win easily. Getting in shape is no different. Every time we try to get fit and fail, we learn a little bit more about how the controls work. Maybe we lost a few pounds with strategy A, but failed with strategy B. If we go to the gym for a few weeks and give up, when we come back next time we are familiar with the inner workings, and don t need to get over the fear of exercising in a public place like the first time. [! 1]

2 It turns out that this strategy might actually be crucial in giving us the motivation to push forward. Capitalize on the Momentum Wharton Professor Katherine Milkman highlights the behaviour in her Fresh Start study: The study showed that Google searches for the term diet (Study 1), gym visits (Study 2), and commitments to pursue goals (Study 3) all increase following temporal landmarks (e.g., the outset of a new week, month, year, or semester; a birthday; a holiday). We propose that these landmarks demarcate the passage of time, creating many new mental accounting periods each year, which relegate past imperfections to a previous period, induce people to take a big-picture view of their lives, and thus motivate aspirational behaviours. Long story short: there are specific points in our life (January 1st, birthdays, a Monday) when we say okay, today is the day that things are going to change. And it helps! When we decide to start anew on a particular day, something powerful can happen. We can look at today as the first day of the rest of our life everything else that has happened up to that point is in the past, and was indicative of our old selves. Instead: Today, moving forward, this new version of us will behave differently. The new version moves forward, levels up, and makes decisions differently than the old version of us. As the study highlights though, these fresh starts have a limited effect it doesn t last forever! That s why what we do when we re filled with this power-up is so important! How to Start Over When you next come to your Today is a new day moment, there are some great steps you can take to guarantee you make a tiny bit of progress towards permanent awesomeness: 1) Separate yourself from the Old You. Today you are somebody different. I don t care how poorly you made decisions yesterday; that was the old you. Change can happen in an instant, and it can be sustainable. So instead of thinking I m going to fail again, you can think that today there s nothing keeping you from achieving the health and fitness goals you re chasing. Why not today? 2) Capitalize on the momentum. Willpower and momentum and inspiration are running high during that first week of NEW ME! so use that to your advantage. During this week, begin to make any changes that will help you permanently. If you sign up for a gym membership and 50 personal trainer sessions NOW, then a few weeks from now when you re ready to start slacking, you ve already pre-paid and set up your appointments, etc.!2

3 Can you use your 20 seconds of courage to sign up at a Dojo for martial arts? Or sign up for a race? Can you use this week to clear out your cabinets of all your old junk food and buy lots of healthy replacements? Can you go out and buy new workout clothes? Can you take the time to schedule all of your workouts in your Google calendar with specific dates and times? Can you follow through on ONE thing for 7-10 days, proving to yourself you can change? Like completing a morning mile walk. Crush your self-limiting beliefs! Try a six week challenge. During the week when you are excited to exercise and excited about change, do as much as you can to seek out permanent wins. If your excitement starts to wane, then you ve at least taken steps towards a permanent change that can carry over to weeks of low motivation. 3) Fail differently. Now, this next attempt might not be the one that sticks either, and that s okay. What s important is that you try to change differently this time. After all, if you do what you ve always done, you ll get what you ve always gotten. So try something different! Take different types of classes. Try blogging your results. Track your calories. Go full Paleo. Change one thing. Change something. Aim for Perma-healthy Here at Nerd Fitness, we don t want you to reach health perfection for one week and then go back to the way things were. I d rather you find a balance of permanently being pretty damn healthy and pretty damn happy. As you are declaring today is Respawn Day! wear it like a badge of honour. You are starting over. You are now somebody different than the person who tried to get fit last time. Anything is possible. You are learning the controls. You are studying the boss battle patterns. And you are getting back in the fight. Your turn: What s one BIG WIN change you make today now that you re fired up and ready to capitalize on this momentum? What s a big win that will result in a LONG LASTING slight improvement? via Nerd Fitness!3

4 SIMPLE GARLIC AND LEMON SALMON Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: minutes Servings: 3 INGREDIENTS 1 pound salmon filet (skin on) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (or more) 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon organic garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper INSTRUCTIONS Note: Make sure to leave it alone when you first flip it, or it will stick to the griddle. Salmon is done when the skin pulls off easily and the fish is easy to pull apart with a fork. Try not to overcook! I like to leave the middle just a tiny bit pinker than the edges of my salmon it is so moist and delicious! NUTRITION INFORMATION Per Serving: Calories: 138; Total Fat: 1 g; Saturated Fat: 3 g; Monounsaturated Fat: 9 g; Polyunsaturated Fat: 5 g; Cholesterol: 54 mg; Sodium: 753 mg; Potassium: 501 mg; Carbohydrate: 2 g; Fiber: 0 g; Sugar: 0 g; Protein: 28 g Nutrition Bonus: Vit C: 8% 1. Heat a large cast iron pan or griddle over medium heat. No need to grease it. 2. Season your salmon. First squeeze the lemon juice on it, then sprinkle the seasonings on top. 3. Place the salmon on your griddle, skin side down, and cook for 5-10 minutes. 4. Flip the salmon over and cook for another 5-10 minutes. via Further Food!4

5 ATHLETE PROFILE When did you join CFM? Had you been involved in other gyms or fitness programs before? NICK SIMPSON June 23, 2015 was my first prep class. Do you have an athletic background? I played baseball in grade 6 and ball hockey in grade 10 but my wife says that doesn t count. What made you decide to join CFM? After Bros, Bars & Beers I realized I needed to change something in my life if I wanted to keep up with our daughter who was turning 1 in June What are your fitness or skill goals? Have you accomplished any of them? To gain more strength and do lifts such as snatch or cleans with proper technique. I have a tendency to muscle them. They have improved but still need work. Do you remember your first workout? It all started with John Gunn dragging me to Bros, Bars & Beer on May 15, It was horrible!! I remember at the end of the partner WOD, which involved running, squats and I think Russian KBS, just sitting there on a box thinking this is stupid, who does this to themselves. Then, unknown to me at the time, in true CFM fashion, the culture started to come out as people I had never met before high-fived me and congratulated me on how I did. This is Kevin s sales pitch, everyday members encouraging each other to do their best each Why tell people why they should join when I can show them before and after pictures! and every day. First prep class WOD was the burpee sandwich (10 burpees and then 5 rounds of 5 push ups, 5 sit ups, and squats followed by 10 burpees). I finished in 8:39 (fast forward to the end of the prep course and I had the time down to 5:44) If we are talking first actual WOD in a full class, it was FRAN on July 27, 2015 scaled to with Thrusters at 50# done in 10+5, 8+4, 6+3 Ring Rows done in same sets Time 6:32. This was nowhere near as horrible as the Bros, Bars, & Beers intro as I was in better shape. Stats CrossFitting since June 2015 Deadlift: 340 Press: 135# Grace C&J: 110# 500m row 1:37 82 rep PR on 17.4 over 16.4!5

6 Which of the 10 components of fitness have you found to be the most challenging? In which ones have you seen the most improvement? I find flexibility most challenging due to range of motion in my arms. I have had comments recently about my high elbows being much better. Strength and endurance have definitely been greatly improved. My deadlift went from 85# to 340# and I did the Remembrance Day WOD The Fallen RX and finished it in 49:03 (with a 50 minute cap) while in 2015 I did half the work in 34 minutes. Describe the atmosphere at CFM. Most welcoming members, very encouraging and understanding coaches. I often tell people that after marrying my wife and having our daughter, joining was one of the best decisions of my life. Give us a few words of advice for someone in their first month of CrossFit. Don t let the workouts or the amount of weight people are lifting frighten you. We were all there at some point. I am able to deadlift 255# more than what I did in prep class just under 2 years ago. That s significant and all thanks to the coaching. The coaches can scale anything to your ability. We have amazing coaches that know how to push you to your limits while knowing what they are. If you don t speak up about something bothering you they will not know. What would you tell someone who is hesitant to try CrossFit? I show them my before and after photos, ask them what is stopping them from trying it, what their goals may be and work with them from there. What is your best (and worst) WOD memory? Bros, Bars, and Beers would fall into both of those memories. It was a wake up call that I needed to change something along with a whole lot of suck. My actual worst memory would be the 2nd time I did sled pushes as I was close meeting Mr. Pukie and signing the wall. What is your favourite lift? Favourite WOD (or type of WOD)? Deadlift without a doubt but cleans and snatches are coming up on that list now as I work more on my technique with them. Doing Maritime Spring Fling didn t hurt. Who inspires you? Coach Shane Hayes. The changes I have observed from his training since I joined as well as looking at his older photos really inspire me to continue pushing my limits. Do you have any CrossFit competition experience? Did the Hopper in Did thrusters at 95# for the first time in a long time and my shoulders got really tight so when moving to the wall balls I wasn t able to hit the 10 target. I came in first in my division though as I was the only one who scaled the wall balls :-) Did Maritime Spring Fling in April 2017 and managed a clean at 175# which is a 20# PR and doing Isabel at 75# in 1:23 which was a 42 second PR. It was fun to be with everyone from CFM at it. What would you say is the greatest benefit you've received from joining, (not including fitness?) Sense of nutrition. My wife, Stacey signed up for the lifestyle challenge in September of 2015, and if I wanted to eat I had to eat what she ate. It really helped a lot with how we looked at food going forward. I have gone down from 255 to # since joining and I have been following Precision Nutrition for almost a year. It really makes you look hard at how you look at food. Am I perfect? Far from it, but I try to be better everyday.!6
