The Journey to Direct Payments 10 steps to getting the support you need This booklet is an easy read summary of the Journey booklet by ecdp and Essex County Council.
In this booklet, there are 10 steps to getting the help you need. I need some help I am going to make contact with someone I have an assessment I am means tested, to see how much money I am entitled to I make a choice to have Direct Payments I write down how I would like to be supported. This is my support plan I get a bit more advice I find out if my support plan has been accepted I choose how I want to receive the money I receive my Direct Payments
What is a Direct Payment? A Direct Payment is money from your local authority (your council) to help pay for your care. You control the money you get, instead of the council. The money can help you meet your needs in different ways.
If you want a Direct Payment You have to show you can manage the Direct Payment money on your own or with help. You have to show you will spend the Direct Payment money on the right things. It is your choice. You do not have to get Direct Payments and your council can still take care of things if you want.
Step 1 I need some help Living with a disability can be difficult sometimes. You might need some help. That s OK. Getting a Direct Payment might be able to help you to live more independently. This means you can do things for yourself.
Step 2 I am going to make contact with someone You can contact Essex County Council to get some help. You can call the Essex County Council Customer Service Centre. This used to be called Social Care Direct. Remember to write down names, phone numbers and dates of when you speak to people. You could ask someone to help you do this.
Step 3 I have an assessment Essex County Council will carry out an assessment to see what help you might need. Someone will visit you to talk about your needs. This is a list of things you might need help with to do. This is your chance to talk about what support you would like or what tasks you find difficult.
Step 4 I am means tested, to see how much money I need to support me Essex County Council will carry out means testing. They will see how much money they can pay towards helping you. They will see how much money you will have to pay towards your own care.
Step 5 I make a choice to have Direct Payments Remember you have a choice about how you get money to pay for your care. If somebody supports you to make decisions, like a family member or carer, you can still have a Direct Payment. Remember you can always change your mind at any point.
Step 6 I write down how I would like to be supported. This is my support plan In your support plan you can have your say about what kind of things will help you. You have 3 choices about how you write your support plan. Choice 1 Your social worker can write your support plan Choice 2 You can write the support plan yourself and send it to Essex County Council. Choice 3 You can talk to ecdp. We re here to help, and we have support planners who can write your plan with you.
Step 7 I get a bit more advice You may have lots of questions. You can speak to the ILA. This is an organisation that can talk to you and give you advice. You can call the ILA on
Step 8 I find out if my support plan has been agreed Essex County Council will read your support plan. If they agree with everything in the plan, they will agree it. They will say the plan is validated. If they don t agree with the plan, they might ask you to make some changes. They will say they have rejected the support plan. Don t worry. You can ask to speak to ecdp, and we will help you with your support plan.
Step 9 I choose how I want to get the money for my care You have 3 choices about how you can get the money for your care. Choice 1 You can set up a bank account and look after the money yourself. Choice 2 ecdp can set up a bank account for you and look after your money. Choice 3 Your family can set up an Independent Living Trust. This means your family will look after your money for you.
Step 10 I get my Direct Payments Congratulations! You have your Direct Payments now. If you have decided ecdp will look after your money, you will get a person to speak to at ecdp whenever you call us. This will be your Account Manager. They can help you look after your money. Remember you can always change your mind at any point.
