Series at a Glance for Elevate About this Series: What is something you would give anything to have? Some people would say they want to live like a king, with money, fame, and power. In this series, we will travel around the world and even through time to find the greatest king ever. On this quest, we will learn that there is more to being a great king than just riches and power. In fact, what makes a king great is something much more valuable: Wisdom. Memory Verse: Look for wisdom as you would look for silver. Search for it as you would search for hidden treasure. 3 Series at a Glance (continued) June 10/11- Week 1: What Makes a King? Our journey on the way of wisdom begins with King Saul. Have you ever watched someone make a really bad choice, and just wanted to yell Stop!? Reading King Saul s story in the Bible may make you feel uncomfortable. How could someone so important make so many bad choices? Saul had it all, riches, power, and he even looked like a king. The one thing he didn t have was the thing he needed to be a great king: wisdom. June 17/18- Week 2: A Wise King If it takes wisdom to be great, a great king must be really wise. King David is an amazing example of someone with wisdom. He wasn t the perfect king, but he followed someone who was. David followed God. Even though David lived about one thousand years before Jesus came to earth, he believed that God loves us. David wanted to be God s friend. Following God is the first step toward living wisely and making good choices every day. June 24/25- Week 3: Wise Friends Unwise choices can hurt our relationships. King David had a problem. He had asked a man named Nabal to feed his soldiers, and Nabal had rudely refused. Instead of talking it over, David decided to attack Nabal. His army was stopped by a wise woman named Abigail. Her story reminds us that one of the first steps on the way of wisdom is finding wise friends. - Week 4: Wisdom Works King David s son, Solomon, was an incredible leader. He was known as the wisest man in the world. Solomon even wrote books about wisdom that we still have today. One of the things Solomon wrote about the most was work. He knew that part of being wise is using that wisdom to do something good. This week we will see how important work is through the story of Solomon. July 8/9- Week 5: Wisdom has Courage Even if we make wise choices, bad things can still happen. For King Hezekiah, that thing was an enemy army marching on Jerusalem, where he lived. He didn t start the fight, but now he was a part of it. This week, find out how God can give us courage, and help us make wise choices, even when it is hard to do. July 15/16- Week 6: Wisdom has Integrity Josiah became king when he was only eight years old! Right away, he had some tough choices to make. The kings before him didn t follow God or listen to what he said. They had actually lost God s law, so no one was sure what it was. When Josiah found the law again, he showed integrity and chose to follow God s law, no matter how hard it was. Integrity means being honest with our words, but also honest with our actions. The incredible integrity King Josiah had is something we can only get by following God. 3

What You Need to DO and KNOW Each Week Opening Do This: Encourage everyone to gather near the stage, and have FUN! Give high-fives, welcome the kids by name, dance to the music, and let kids know we re going to have fun today! Interact with the crowd! Create a buzz about what is going to happen. Know This: This is intended to be a fun time! You as the leader need to set that standard so kids can feel comfortable. If you re not willing to open up and be silly, they won t either. It s ok if some kids are shy or stand-offish, but YOU should model what we d like to see! Welcome Do This: Greet the kids with enthusiasm without being overwhelming. Know This: During this time you are working to gain the kids trust. Something as simple as telling them what is going to happen during the hour can help relieve some anxiety that they may have. We will also gain their trust by showing them that this is a place that is not weird or different from what they see in other places. Worship Do This: Perform the provided actions to the songs and demonstrate enthusiastic worship for kids. Encourage kids to join in, but don t force them to participate. Read aloud any verses that are on the screen (unless the song features a voice over). Direct the kids attention towards God. Call out upcoming lyrics when appropriate and help the kids engage in singing. Know This: It s okay if some kids don t sing or do actions to the songs. They may worship by just reflecting on the lyrics and listening. Our music set is generally made of high-energy songs to help kids get engaged in worship. Media Do This: Sit or stand to the side of the screen(s). Watch the media and appear engaged using appropriate non-verbals. Know This: Although this is a good time to catch your breath and gather your thoughts, you are still technically on. Kids may be looking at you to see if you are watching the videos, and if you don t look engaged, they may not choose to engage either. Prayer Do This: Ask the kids to be respectful and quiet; you will pray out loud, while they pray quietly in their hearts and heads. Sit or crouch down and engage the kids as you pray. Know This: We want the kids to learn how to pray by seeing you model this. Feel free to say your own prayer this one is simply a suggestion, but do keep it short. Bible Verses & Memory Verse Do This: Read any verses from the side screen aloud. Make the memory verse fun! After you ve read it, do something silly like challenge the boys to be louder than the girls, jump up and down, add actions, or have the kids recite the verse using different voices. 4

Opening Song 2:00 (Roll when directed) Elevate Opener Hey everyone, welcome to Elevate! Throw away your popcorn and find a place to sit, let s get ready to go! (Auto advance) Elevate Slide and Underscore Welcome and Opening Activity 8:00 My name is. It is so awesome that you are here! Let s get started with something fun. I m going to need four people to play a game! Do This: Select four volunteers, and bring them up to the stage. Give each of them a popsicle stick and five dice. Game Title Slide: A Little Dicey This activity is called A Little Dicey. They are going to put a popsicle stick in their mouths, then, they will have two minutes to stack as many dice on top of it as possible. If someone gets all five dice stacked, and holds it for three seconds, they are the winner! You all have a popsicle stick and five dice, are you ready? Get set, go! Do This: If you want to, you can add some drama by creating a competition between the boys and girls, or even just the left side of the room and the right side of the room. Encourage kids to cheer for their side. 2:00 Countdown with game music Great job! That is tougher than it looks. We ve been learning about wisdom for the last few weeks. Wisdom means making good choices. We ve learned that wisdom is important, that it comes from God, and that it helps our friendships. Today, we get to see what a difference it makes when we use wisdom in the things we do. That s what our question of the day is about, too! Question of the Day Video 6

(Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What is something you have worked really hard at? What is something you have worked really hard at? It could be a project you are proud of finishing, something you have practiced for a long time, or something that you have done that took a lot of effort. Tell someone near you what you are thinking of, and listen to their answer, too! Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with those around them. If time allows, you can ask a couple of kids to share their answers with the larger group. It feels great to finish something that you have been working hard on. We ll be talking about why that feels so good in a few minutes, but first, we get to do something else that feels great, worship God! Worship Worship 5:00 When we use the word worship, we really mean showing God respect and love. Every time we talk to God, sing about him, give generously, and share his love with other people, we are worshipping God. Singing is a really fun way to show how much we love God. This is a song about God s love for us. Stand and get ready to jump! Song 1: Jump. (Auto advance) Worship It is so much fun to sing with you. As you sit down, let s bow our heads and close our eyes to show respect to God, and talk to him for a moment. God, thank you for how much you love us. Thank you for giving us this amazing world to live in and take care of. Help us to show that we love you every day. In Jesus name, Amen. Run the Bumper Video as the prayer ends. 7

Lesson Intro 1:00 Elevate Bumper Video (Auto-Advance) Series Title Slide: This series is called. Wisdom is super important to have, but it s not something you can just carry around. Being wise means making the right choices. Wisdom is like a way, a trail for us to follow. All throughout your life, you will have to make new, exciting, and sometimes difficult choices. God shows us how we can make wise choices, and he helps us every step of the way. Today, we get to talk about a wise choice you can make today, tomorrow, and every day, the choice to work hard. Share Your Story 3:00 I don t mean working like getting a job. When I say working hard, I mean choosing to do your best, whatever you are working on. That is one of the best wise choices you and I can make. Do This: Share an engaging, relevant, age-appropriate story about something you did that took hard work above and beyond what you would normally do. Talk about something you are proud of finishing. Why did you do it? How did it feel when you completed it? What would have happened if you did only a halfhearted job, or didn t finish? It s always worth it to do your best, no matter what you are doing. Bible Story 4:00 One of the wisest people in the world was also one of the hardest working. Let s check out the story of King Solomon. : Solomon (Auto advance) Fast Break! 8

Fast Break 2:00 Solomon s hard work helped people learn about God, and gave them an amazing place to worship him. This is a great place for a fast break! This activity is simple. I m going to clap. All you have to do is clap at exactly the same time as I do. If we get it right, it should sound like one giant clap. You have to watch me very closely. Stand up, stretch, and let s try! Do This: Clap, and encourage the kids to clap at the exact same time. With practice, you can all do it! Try clapping in rhythm, then changing it up, starting and stopping, or acting like you are going to clap, then stopping. Encourage the kids to watch your hands closely. Nice work! Stretch one more time, then sit back down. Message 7:00 Series Title Slide: Solomon worked really hard to build something for God. Building isn t the only thing we do that takes a lot of effort. Anything we do that we can be proud of takes work. If you want to be a great piano player, it takes a lot of practice. If you want to be the best basketball dribbler, it will take work. If you want to be really great at a video game, or learn a new language, it will take hard work. The big question we are going to ask is, Why? Why is it so important to do my best? I ll show you. Do This: Bring out a set of giant Jenga blocks, and place them on the floor. Doing the best you can is a wise choice. It takes some time to build a sturdy tower. Three blocks this way, then three that way. Do This: Assemble three or four layers of the Jenga blocks, laying three facing one direction, then three on top of those facing the opposite direction. Show how sturdy the tower is by kicking it gently and shaking it with your hands. That seems to be working pretty well. This is a strong tower. Now imagine I m a different builder, one who just wants to get done as fast as I can. This seems silly to use all these bricks. I could just stack one on top of the other, and have a way taller tower! Do This: Make a second tower by laying one brick, and putting another right on top of it. Put as many bricks on the tower as fast as you can. Build until your tower falls over. If it doesn t fall, check it for strength and kick it lightly. It will collapse. That was way faster, but my tower fell over. Can you imagine if Solomon had only halffinished the temple? People wouldn t have been able to get to know God there, because it 9

was unfinished. If he didn t build it right, it might have even been a dangerous place to be inside. What if Solomon tried to take a shortcut, and thought I can save money by using fake gold, instead of real gold. People would have found out, and the temple would have been a lot less amazing. Thankfully, he did the best job he could, and the temple stood as a place where people could learn about God for hundreds of years. Maybe you are thinking, The things Solomon did were important. I don t have to work hard if something isn t important, do I? That is up to you. Even if something doesn t seem important now, doing the best you can is always a wise choice. Think about how practice works. If you want to be the best at something, you need to practice doing small things well. If you want to be a great football player, you don t just practice scoring, running into the end zone day after day. You practice running, passing, catching, watching for the ball. If you want to be a great violin player, you don t start by playing a difficult song. You start by learning the notes, then the chords, then playing simple songs, and after a lot of work, you can do amazing things. The choices you make now, in small and big things, are practice for the choices you are going to have to make in the future. What small things are you doing this week? How hard you work at homework or chores now is practice for the future. If you clean your room really well, your parents might trust you to do bigger jobs. If you work hard on your homework, it will be easier to pass the next test you have. Everything you do can be important, if you choose to do your best. That silly project you have to do? You will be proud of it if you choose to do a good job. That chore that you are tired of doing every week? Your parents might be surprised and happy if you do it, then ask if you can help in other ways this week. That instrument, sport, or any other thing you are tired of practicing? It may be something you are glad you can do in the future, if you choose to do your best at it now. Doing your best, working hard, is always a wise choice. I ve got a challenge for all of you, to get you working on something fun! Application Activity 8:00 Game Title Slide: Wisdom Works This activity is called Wisdom Works. I m going to need five volunteers. Do This: Choose five volunteers, and bring them on the stage. Try to choose kids that are comfortable with acting on stage. If you are doing this as a group activity, help kids find their group leaders, and make sure all leaders have a job list for this activity. 10

You have some really important jobs to do. I have a list of them right here. I m going to show you a job, and you will get to act it out. Audience, your goal is to guess what kind of job the person on stage is doing. It s pretty simple. Ready? Do This: Show the first volunteer the Policeman card. Allow them to act it out, and the audience to guess. Know This: The cards are: Policeman, Doctor, Janitor, Artist, and Builder. After every one of those cards, have the kids answer the following questions. Great job! Everyone think for a moment. How can someone in that job help others? What would happen if no one did that job? If no one chose to be a policeman, there would be no one to protect us, or stop people from committing crimes. That s a really important job. Let s try another one. Do This: Show the second volunteer the Doctor card. Allow them to act it out, and the audience to guess. Great job! Everyone think for a moment. How can someone in that job help others? What would happen if no one did that job? If there weren t any doctors, what would we do if we got sick, or broke a bone? I m really glad there are people who do that job. Volunteer number three, it s your turn! Do This: Show the third volunteer the Janitor card. Allow them to act it out, and the audience to guess. Great job! Everyone think for a moment. How can someone in that job help others? What would happen if no one did that job? If no one cleaned up, everything would just stay dirty, and not look good. That s a job all of us can help with, too! It s important to keep our homes and our world clean. Volunteer four, let s go! Do This: Show the fourth volunteer the Artist card. Allow them to act it out, and the audience to guess. 11

Great job! Everyone think for a moment. How can someone in that job help others? What would happen if no one did that job? Without artists, we wouldn t have music, painting, and so many other beautiful things. I m sure glad there are artists who put a lot of work into making the best art they can. One more! Volunteer five, come on up! Do This: Show the fifth volunteer the Builder card. Allow them to act it out, and the audience to guess. Great job! Everyone think for a moment. How can someone in that job help others? What would happen if no one did that job? If no one built or designed buildings, we wouldn t have this amazing church building, and our homes wouldn t be nearly as nice. I m sure thankful for the people who worked hard to build the places we live in. Series Title Slide: There is a lot we can learn from that activity. I m glad there are people that do those jobs, but it s not just about being a doctor, a builder, or an artist. Just like they have to work hard to do the best job they can, we all have things that only we can do. In your family, only you can be the best son, daughter, sister, brother, or cousin possible. That takes some work. You might have to forgive, or be nice to a family member you don t like. At school, only you can do your best to learn. You don t have to have perfect scores on everything, but you can choose to do your best by learning as much as you can. If there is one thing I want you to remember about today, it is this. Big Idea Slide: The way of wisdom takes work. Being on the way of wisdom takes work. This doesn t mean working so hard that you are exhausted all the time. This kind of work means choosing to do the best you can. It starts small, by picking up someone else s trash, taking an extra ten minutes to do your homework well, or spending an extra five minutes talking to God today. The more we 12

choose to do our best, the easier it will get. Not all our choices will go well, even when they are good choices. Things will go wrong; we will mess up. When that happens, there s one wise choice you can always make. Try again. Do your best. If you feel like you need help, remember that God is always with you, ready to help you when you ask him. Worship 4:00 We have so much to thank God for. He has promised to always be with us and help us. As we sing this slower song about God, let s stay sitting down. If you want to just listen to the words, you can, but take this time to think about God, and how much he loves you. Song 2: Oceans Memory Verse 3:00 (Auto-Advance) Memory Verse: Proverbs 2:4- Look for wisdom as you would look for silver. Search for it as you would search for hidden treasure. Do This: Take out the Bible and show it to the kids. I love worshipping God with all of you. God wants all of us to know how much he loves us. That s why he gave us this book, the Bible. When we learn verses, words from the Bible, we are learning things that God wants us to know. These stories and sayings help us to make wise choices and get to know God. Let s say this verse together. Do This: Have the kids say the verse with you 2-3 times. Then, try a quick challenge. I think you are getting the hang of this verse! If you are on the left side of the room, you are going to say the first part of the verse when I point to you. Look for wisdom as you would look for silver. If you are on the right, say Search for it as you would search for hidden treasure. I want to see which side can say their part of the verse the loudest! Do This: Point to each side of the room, changing up your pace and order. Encourage each side to be louder than the other. 13

Review Activity 7:00 Game Title Slide: Split Decision Now we are going to review what we ve talked about, with an activity called Split Decision! I m going to give you two options, one for each side of the room. Some of these will be yes or no answers, and some of them will be just your opinion. Pick one side of the room, and see what others think! Let s start with an easy one. Do This: For each option you give, point to one side of the room. Be very clear which side the kids should go to for each option. Your first choice is between cake or ice cream. There s not a right answer for this one, choose your favorite! Let s try again. This one is a trivia question. How long did Solomon spend building the temple? Ten years or seven years? The answer is seven years! Alright, now for another opinion. Would you rather practice playing an instrument or playing a sport? Wow! Both of those things take a lot of practice to do them well. In the story Jesus told about the two builders, did the wise man build his house on the sand or the rock? The answer is the rock! He had to work harder, but his house was safe to live in, and didn t collapse like the other one. I ve got two more questions for you! Which do you think takes more work, doing homework, or doing chores? If you like to do one of those more than the other, it probably feels like less work. Ok, last question. This one you can just answer out loud. We said the way of wisdom takes something today. What was it? Work! The way of wisdom takes practice, and it takes work. Even though it can be hard, doing our best is always worth it. Series Title Slide: We can always do our best, because we have God s help. When we make mistakes, when we do well, no matter what, God loves to listen to us. We can talk to Him anytime and 14

anywhere, we don t have to do anything special, or even close our eyes. We like to close our eyes and bow our heads here in Elevate, though, to show respect to God. Let s do that and talk to him now. God, thank you for helping us to be wise. Thank you for giving us chances to work hard and do amazing things. Help us to do our best this week, whatever we are doing. Amen. Worship 5:00 We have one more song for you to sing, it s an awesome one. Let s stand and sing together! Song 3: We Won t Be Quiet (Auto-Advance) Elevate Slide I m so glad you could all be here in Elevate! Have a great week. 15
