2 Tom is sitting on the couch with a remote in his hand. Kate enters with shopping bags. She is in a good mood and smiling. Hey, honey, how was "Black Friday" shopping? Entertaining. There was an incident with two women, a mall cop and a Frozen display. Let' just say they all wound up in the mall fountain and I'm sure somebody's getting their mug shot taken as we speak. What is it with Black Friday? And Frozen? Let it go, man. Anyway, I managed to emerge with no limbs broken and all my teeth are intact. I'd call that a successful Black Friday shopping day, wouldn't you (chuckling at her own joke)? The crowds were huge, but all in all it was pretty great. Crazy, but great. Director's Note: The lines above about the movie "Frozen" and the "Let it Go" reference can be changed to a different pop culture phenomenon. Make sure whatever display you refer to, though, has something to do with kids pop culture, i.e. Disney movie, latest toy craze, etc. Well you're in a good mood. (Suspicious) You normally hate big, crazy crowds. (Brushing it off) What? No (Notices bag) I know that smile. That smile means you got something for you. Yes? So close to Christmas? Well, maybe just a little. You know, technically. (Confessing) Okay, I bought shoes. You got shoes, huh? I know our budget and I know that wasn't on the list. So were they giving these shoes away? (Laughs nervously) I wish! That would be awesome. But see here's what happened. See, I was out Christmas shopping for your parents presents Thanks, by the way. (Trying to dig her way out) So I'm out walking around and they put the shoes in the window of the store! (Sarcastically) Oh those nasty employees! I know! And I walk by the window and they talk to me. The employees? No, the shoes. 2

3 Oh, well that s a new one. And so you re walking by and what did this pair say to you? They say Kate! Kate! You complete me! Oh, I see. Well, usually that's what humans say to humans but leather was saying that to you? Yes, they were talking to me. And you know they're Jimmy Choos (an expensive brand of shoes). Jimmy who? Jimmy Choos. Honey, I believe Jimmy Choo was an 80 s dance. That was Wang Chung. No, I'm pretty sure it was everybody have fun tonight, everybody Jimmy Choo tonight. No, that's not how it goes. No, it is. You know what? I can Google it and I would be right. (She starts to leave) You go on and Google it Okay. All I m saying is you don t need another pair of shoes! (She comes back) What? I've seen our closet and I don't think you need any more shoes. Well, you need to understand that I des Points the remote at her and pauses her ; Kate freezes; Tom addresses the audience. Okay. This part right here, this conversation that s about to take place, this phrase that she s about to say- it s a phrase that you can t argue with. It s a phrase that she takes for the gospel truth. It s a phrase that makes complete sense to her, but to nobody else. It s this phrase that just infuriates me to no end. It s this phrase Tom points the remote back at Kate and hits play". -deserve it! You deserve it? 3

4 Yes! I work hard all day long and then I have to come home and I have to clean up after you and I cook the dinner and I take care of the kids and I buy your parent's Christmas presents Yes, yes you're a saint. Alright, fine. Kate starts to leave again. Tom goes back to watching TV; Kate has a thought and goes back to Tom. So, are you going to hang the Christmas lights? You said you'd do it in time for the Homeowner's Association Parade of Lights starts tonight. Uh yes! Yes, hello, how ya doin. I said I'd do it after this game. SCRIPT Honey, it s Friday. Afternoon. The parade starts in TO about 4 hours. What? That's plenty of time! All I have to do is throw that Santa blow up thingy out in the yard and string some lights. What's the big deal? So you're just going to phone it in this year, is what you're saying? Yes, I am going to sit here and watch football. We bought this 72 inch smart TV that talks to us (whispers) it talks to us! We took down family pictures in order for it to go on the wall, so it was a bit of a sacrifice. Plus, we're not paying anything until 20, (fill in the year, whatever is about 3 or 4 years from now) so I'm obligated to sit here and watch this football game. And furthermore this just might be our year! (You can insert a joke here about your hometown's favorite football team- how bad or how good they've been this year. For us, it's a joke about the Cowboys performing a Christmas miracle you get the idea.) Do you understand that I work hard for the money? I work hard for you, honey. But Kate, you never treat me right. Right. You don t! And all of this (pointing towards his TV ) I I I deser Kate takes his remote and points it at him; she hits pause and Tom freezes. And there it is! I think he just uses that phrase because he hears me using it. But come on. He is out of control. Who needs a 72 inch smart TV anyway?! But shoes you need shoes. And you know what? This (indicating Tom) is why scientists have discovered that animal mothers eat their young. Kate hits the remote again and Tom unfreezes. I deserve it! 4

5 Okay, great. Well, let me as you something, mister. Do you deserve these? (She pulls a bag of tortilla chips out of her bag.) Where did you get those? Under the seat in my car. I thought you were on a diet. I am on a diet. But I go work out, and when I get through I m exhausted. And people at the gym say to me hey you look a little corn fed so I go to the Doritos and I eat a little corn for sustenance. Well that is brilliant. It may not make a lot of sense to you but it makes perfect sense to me in SCRIPT my world. I deserve it, okay? TO Well, you know what I deserve? Shoes! Okay, you know what you deserve? You deserve an explanation for that haircut. How much was that? $150? I m looking at it thinking I can go and cut the grass and then come in here and cut your hair for free. I m looking at that going who cut that, Gepeto? Look at me! Look at me! I m a real boy! What?! Oh come on! Well you know what, then? According to you I need a new haircut so I m going to go get one. And then I m going to call all my friends and we re going to have a spa day on you! No, Kate that s not what I meant! Don t you don t you do it! (She gets out her phone starts to dial) Just one second! Kate turns to face the other direction as she s waiting for someone to answer; she suddenly realizes how foolish this all is; meanwhile Tom is stuffing chips into his mouth as fast as he can behind her to spite her. This is ridiculous. I mean, look at me! I feel so ashamed. (She turns to face him again; he s caught with a mouthful of chips. This can be comical on Tom's part with chips falling out of his mouth) Are you not embarrassed? (Guiltily) I m a little bloated. What do you mean? Well, look at this. Look at all this stuff. We have lost control and we don t deserve any of this. God has given us everything and we just haven t done a good job with it. We think we rule, but we don t rule. 5

6 Yeah you're right. When I was in High School I used to write in everybody's year book, Have a great summer. I rule. But you're right, we don't rule. Yeah. (Trying to encourage him a little) You rock. I do rock. But God rules. And you know what else? What s that scripture verse? With great power comes great responsibility. That was Spider-Man the first movie. Right. Oh I know. It s to whom much has been given much is required. Luke 12:48. There you go. How did things get so out of control? There's no peace. We've just totally gone off the tracks. When did it get like this? Where's that peace that passes all understanding? I don't know. I'm just so exhausted from trying to keep up with the Joneses. I don't even know who they are but did you see the Smiths? They have a new boat and it is awesome! (Kate gives him a look) Right, I know. What do you want to do? Well, I tell you what I m going to do. I m going to take these shoes back. And I know something you could take back. Something in this room (Tom begins to shake his head no ) Like these chips? No, I'm thinking something bigger. Maybe something that you have 90 days to return and I have the receipt in a drawer in my desk? And we can actually put our family pictures back up on the wall. (Tom keeps shaking his head and it gets a little more vigorous; He finally relents) Alright. The Cowboys (or your favorite team) are losing anyway, so alright. I'll take it down. Let's get the peace back. Let's get the peace back. I'll take the TV down you take the shoes back. Alright. 6

7 Kate continues to walk in the direction she was originally headed. Kate, that's the way to our bedroom, the door and the car are this way. (She's caught) Okay. (To the audience) Friends, this Christmas season through all the buying through all the parties, as believers in Jesus Christ, let's not lose the meaning of Christmas. If you have lost your peace, what a great time to find it the peace that surpasses all understanding. Where our heart is, that's our treasure. Lights out. 7
