1. STORYBIRD.COM TUTORIAL The following is meant to acquaint teachers with the storybird.com website, how to use it as a resource for viewing and reading stories online, and how to guide students to use it to create and publish their English writing online. storybird.com is an excellent website to use for teaching writing. After a number of lessons of writing to pictures, students should be ready to start using storybird.com to write and publish their own stories. Students can work alone, in pairs and even in small groups on storybird.com. Go to o Click on READ at the top left of the screen to read stories posted on storybird.com. o Click on Sign up for Free to create a free account (an account is necessary to write and publish stories on storybird.com). o Click on WRITE to begin creating your own story on storybird.com.
2. READING STORIES ON STORYBIRD.COM After clicking READ you will be directed to the reading page. o On the reading page you can select what type of book you want to read, what theme you want to read about, and what age level of story you want to read.
3. SINGING UP FOR A FREE ACCOUNT ON STORYBIRD.COM After clicking on the Sign up for Free button you will be directed to the sign up page. o Click on Regular user if you want to create and publish stories online that anyone can view. For creating private classroom work, read more on the website about singing up as Educator/Teacher and Student.
When entering information to create an account, be sure NOT to use your real name when creating a username. o Make sure the you give is a valid . o Create a password you will use for storybird.com.
4. HOW TO CREATE A STORY ON STOYBIRD.COM Once you ve created an account and want to begin writing a story, return to the home page and click on WRITE.
On the artwork page, scroll down to find artwork that you want to use to write your story to. You can also click on any of the tag terms on the left side to narrow your search. o Once you find artwork you like, simply click on the artwork to view all the images in the collection. Teachers could pre-select a set, or sets, of artwork for students to write to. This could be beneficial for lower-level students. It could also allow the teacher to direct student writing towards a specific topic or theme or language area in accordance with other English classwork. After clicking on an image from the artwork page you will then be able to view all the images in the collection.
o If you decide the artwork is not right for your story, simply click back to the previous page and try another artwork collection. o If you decide you do want to use the images to write your story, simply click on Use this Art.
When you click on Use this Art a drop-down menu will open from which you choose what kind of book you want to use the artwork for. o Longform Book is a typical novel-style book, usually with few images and a lot of text. This type of book is most appropriate for students with an advanced knowledge of English. o Picture Book can be long or short, and can have a lot or a little text. It differs from Longform in that there are pictures on every page of a Picture Book. This type of book is appropriate for all students. o Poem is a single image, for which students write a poem using words provided by the website. This type of writing is appropriate for all students.
The structure for writing a Poem might be limiting for more advanced students, but could be very beneficial for lower-level students and for specific language focussed lessons.
Once you choose the kind of book you want to write, a new page will open in which you can begin creating your book. o Below is what creating a Picture Book looks like. o Simply drag images from the left and right sides onto the page in the centre to add them to your story (you are limited to one image per page of your book). o Click in the labelled area to write the text of your story. o To add a page, click the + button near the bottom right. o To delete a page, click the button near the bottom left.
Click on Menu at the bottom left for more options. o Whenever you leave storybird.com remember to save your work. o When you re ready you can Publish your book by clicking on the Menu button at the bottom left and then clicking on Publish.
Whenever you return to Storybird.com you can access any books you are still writing, or books you have previously published, as well as other people s books you ve read and put on your Bookshelf, and also change your account settings by clicking on YOU at the top left. o To access your own work, click on Your Stuff from the drop-down menu. o Don t forget to Logout when you re done!
