2 Greetings, I am Julia A. Royston, CEO of BK Royston Publishing, LLC. I know what it is like to desire to publish a book and don t really know how to start. What do you do first? If you were like me, I had all of my writings in spiral notebooks, not even typed. To make matters worse, I really didn t want anybody to see them because I didn t know if my writing was good enough. But, down inside of me, I knew I could do it. Fortunately, I had friends surrounding me to help me through the process. In an attempt to meet the needs of authors everywhere as well as continue to stimulate and facilitate the writing process, we have developed this booklet that will help get you started. First, we congratulate you on taking the first steps in the publishing process! Know that publishing is a process but, a very rewarding one. Here at BK Royston Publishing we accept the responsibility of maintaining the highest level of service to our authors to make the process as smooth as possible. We realize that every book is different and unique just like every person is unique. Our hope with this booklet is to give you general guidelines that are the same for all authors regardless of the genre, book size, book content or media format of your book. The decision to publish your book may be a fulfillment of a life-long dream. We understand that and here to help make that dream come true. You have seen other people showcasing their books on a television program, available online, Facebook or at conferences and wondered whether if you can do that? Yes, you can do that too. Get out those notebooks of poems, dig that great love story that is hidden away and revisit that helpful how-to guide to a message for the masses and let s get started. 2

4 Write it Down The idea for a book may have been going around in your head for years but, it is now time to write it down. If you prefer pen and paper, that is fine. You can also speak your ideas into your phone or other recording device. With so many innovations in technology, you can get down your book content in various ways using dictation apps and devices so that you don t have to physically write out the book by hand. If you have any questions regarding suggested devices, us at bkroystonpublishing@gmail.com. Type it Up Your manuscript needs to be in electronic format prior to being published. Therefore the manuscript should be typed using a desktop computer, laptop or ipad using word processing software. The manuscript does not have to be edited but, it should submitted in Microsoft Word double spaced, at least 12 point type font and each page should be 8 ½ x 11 inches in size. If you desire someone else to type the manuscript, BK Royston Publishing offers that service a fee, feel free to contact us at bkroystonpublishing@gmail.com. Back it Up You don t want to lose any of your manuscript. Be sure to save the manuscript in several places. Do not have the only copy of your manuscript on your home computer, laptop or external flash drive. Floods, fires, break-ins and all types of natural disasters can happen and you lose your manuscript. Back it up. There are several virtual, cloud and webbased storage applications that can easily store your manuscript as well. If you have any questions or need suggestions, contact bkroystonpublishing@gmail.com. Finish It Up Your message can t get to the world until you finish the manuscript. Once you walk away from a manuscript for a while it is hard to get back to it but, force yourself to finish. It will be worth it in the end when you have finished that manuscript. Get an accountability partner who will hold you to writing if 3

5 only for a few minutes a day. It will surprise you how much you can get accomplished with just writing minutes a day. 4
