4 In Your Own Words 4 Prepared by: Marco In this exercise, you will need to answer questions about Crameye s book. You won t have to choose from multiple choices, however. Here, you just need to speak your ideas to others and see if they agree. Choose your words wisely as it is important to get your idea across. In the space provided, you can jot down notes about your answer, but you do not need to write out complete sentences. When you speak your answer, speak from your brain and not from your paper or the book! 1. At the beginning of the book, why wasn t Crameye speaking to anyone? 2. How did Neva s sister reach the name of Thor starting from Florence? 3. What was Crameye s mistake when speaking Finnish to the man on the bus? 4. 6 Lets Talk About It 6 Prepared by: Marco Ready to speak some more? Great! Here are some topics and issues for you and your partner(s) to discuss. Share your ideas (and even back them up with support from the book), listen to each other, and be ready to report back what you decided. 1. In this book, we learned that Finns tend to be very quiet people. Why are they so quiet? Do you admire this trait, or do you think it is rude? 2. What kind of people are Crameye and Neva? What do you make of their relationship? 3. Let s talk about the three sisters, Aurora, Borie, and Alice. As you know, it turns out that the three sisters were all part of the same entity, the Aurora Borealis. Let s do something fun and look at the three girls as different parts of the same Finnish person. A) Looking at the three sisters as different parts of the same Finnish person, what parts of a Finn do they each represent? B) What does it say about Finns that Aurora is the one usually leading the way? What happens when the other two lead? C) Are Aurora, Borie, and Alice in you too? Who leads? Would you add any characters? What would their names be, and what part of you do they represent?

7 Mini Mission 1: Walk the Walk! Prepared by: Marco 7 Read each of the following situations and do two things: 1. Use what you learned about Finnish people in Crameye s book to help you figure out how a Finnish person would respond to each situation. 2. Think about and share how you would respond, then discuss how you are similar to or different from a Finnish way of thinking. Remember, this section is all about discussing, so there is no need to write out your answers. You may just want to write down a note or two to help organize your ideas. Situation 1 On your way home, you witness the most beautiful sunset you have ever seen. It touches you deeply, and you stop and just soak in its beauty until it is gone. Afterwards, you feel as if you have just had a special moment with the universe. When you get home, someone asks you how your day was and if anything special happened. What would a Finn do? What would you do?

Situation 3 You are walking down the street and a smiling stranger approaches you. The stranger is about your age. She says that she is so happy right now and just wants to hug someone. She is clean, dressed well, seems otherwise normal. What would a Finn do? What would you do? Situation 4 You have a project sitting on your desk that needs your attention. At the same time, your favorite TV show is about to come on. You can also smell cookies that just came out of the oven. At the same time, you learned earlier in the day that your best friend was moving away, and you are quite sad. What would a Finn do? What would you do?

9 9 Mini Mission 2: Talk The Talk! Prepared by: Marco Think about the most exciting thing you have every experienced. If you can t think of one, think of the most frightening, embarrassing, beautiful, or even sad thing you have ever done or witnessed. After choosing, jot down some notes about the experience below. There is no need to write complete sentences, just write down some notes of the key parts of your experience and how you felt.

After you finish relating your experience, and listening to others experiences, think about and discuss the following questions: Do you think by using language, the other people truly experienced what you experienced just as intensely? Was language able to capture your experience and every part of it? Does it bother you that other people may not truly understand and feel what you experienced, or even think what you experienced wasn t that big of deal? Would not trying to relate the experience keep the memory of it stronger and truer to the original? Do you think in the future you might like to have more silent appreciation of things, like Crameye and Neva have about the aurora borealis, and like Aurora told us about in the story?

11 11 Mini Mission 3: Be Quiet! Prepared by: Marco Your teacher is about to give you some busy work, during which you must remain completely silent. To finish your work, you will still need to communicate with others, just not by speaking. While doing so, keep in mind how Aurora only spoke w hen she really needed to, and even stated that much of what people say just isn t necessary. Even talkative Crameye favored silence after returning to Taiwan, claiming he was still able to understand others and be understood. When doing this exercise, pay attention to what kind of communication you experience, what moments you share with others, and whether or not really needed to speak at all. Example observations: I could tell that Billy just wanted to work alone. You could tell by his posture. Jenny and I each agreed that this exercise was silly. We knew that because we shared a smirk. Boris and Sasha really seem to be great friends. Everything they did was in sync. Beaufort didn t really want to be here. He seemed sad and like he wanted to be somewhere else. He felt disconnected.

15 Mini Mission 5: Dos and Don ts 15 Prepared by: Marco Read over this list of Dos and Don ts prepared for new arrivals in Finland found on the web: Don t: 1. Wonder out loud why Sweden has more world- famous products, artists, and athletes than Finland. Too much to handle for the touchy Finns. 2. Think you re seeing things if you have a feeling that almost everyone is wearing small rectangle- shaped eyeglasses. They are. 3. Keep your shoes on if you are invited to someone s home. 4. Visit without calling first. The door may not open without a prior notice. 5. Make empty promises. If you say to a Finn, Let s do lunch, he or she truly believes you have set up a lunch meeting and expects to hear from you. 6. Tip. People are not used to tips and don t always know how to react. Do: 1. Compliment Finns, even though they don t take compliments well and don t necessarily know how to reply. 2. Make an effort and say, Excuse me, if you want to pass someone. But don t expect a reaction. The right way to do it is to just push your way around. 3. Use a fork and a knife when eating. No food is finger food in Finland. 4. Learn a few words in Finnish, even though it s hard. It s an ego- booster for a Finn to hear a foreigner speak his language. 5. Remember that Finnish women are independent and believe in equality.

Remember when Neva couldn t figure out how Borie and Alice were born on the same day of the same year to the same mother, but still weren t twins? Your mission is to become a travel agent and prepare a three-day itinerary for travelers in Finland. Do you want to make it an adventure/outdoorsy trip? Okay! Do you want to make it a great trip for families? Kids? All about food? All okay! You just need to stick to a theme (if you have one) and make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
