GIVING FULL EFFORT, 1 Record (bullet points ok): 1) What are some ways that Charlie showed effort in Flower for Algernon? 2) How did giving full effort help Charlie get what he wanted, even just for a little while? 3) Think about a time when effort was important. It could be in a movie or TV show, a news article, a book, your life, or the life of someone you know. Describe what happened and explain why effort was an important factor. Afterwards we will discuss. 1

2 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GIVE YOUR FULL EFFORT? Start at the top of a page or at a half-way line. You will write ½ page in paragraph form on the topics on this slide. In paragraph form, define giving full effort. (consider explaining willpower as a part of this) Continue your paragraph, explaining what it looks like when someone actually gives FULL effort. You might also talk about what it looks like when someone doesn t give full effort. Give 1-3 detailed examples. Sometimes you can get what you want without giving full effort. Sometimes it doesn t seem worth it to give your full effort, for one reason or another. STILL, SOAR CHOSE GIVING FULL EFFORT AS AN ESLR. WHY??? 2

3 SOAR believes that you MUST be able to GIVE FULL EFFORT. If you don t push yourself, how will you know what you are actually capable of? STUDIES SHOW THAT UNLESS YOU PRACTICE PUSHING YOURSELF YOU WON T BE ABLE TO GIVE FULL EFFORT WHEN IT COUNTS. You have to develop willpower to use it later. In paragraph form in at least ½ page, explain why it is important to give your full effort and try your best, even if it s not fun to do. Suggest why SOAR as your school might think trying your best is an important skill to practice. 3

4 HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE GIVING FULL EFFORT? Consider how much effort you put in at a variety of tasks: academics, sports, chores, family, friends, relationships, artistic endeavors, games, etc. Give yourself credit AND hold yourself accountable find things you do work at and things you don t. HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE GIVING FULL EFFORT? In a ½ page or longer paragraph, answer the following prompts. How often do you give full effort? In what areas do you usually give your best effort? What motivates you to work hard in that area? What is one area that you could work on showing more effort in? Can you think of anything to motivate yourself in this area? Give several examples of times you pushed yourself to do your best or times you gave up that you wish you had pushed yourself harder. 4

5 WORK TIME Finish your writing. Your paragraphs should total 1.5 or more pages. The prompts are summarized below. What does it mean to give your full effort? Why is it important to give your full effort? How frequently do you work on this ESLR? How well do you give your full effort? If you finish, go back and check that you finished your last ESLR (independent thinking). If you ve finished your other ESLR, read your book. The book report is due 11/6, in two weeks, and you ll get more information on it today or tomorrow. 5
