LeROACH/MOSCO side 1 [LeRoach and Mosco make their way through the tunnel.] LeROACH: Must be scorching up there. Won t be easy surviving in that heat. MOSCO: You ll be alright. You can survive anything. LeROACH: It s not all that it s cracked up to be. MOSCO: Crusty ain t no worse than a mantis. He ain t even a real bug. He s a crustacean for crying out loud! LeROACH: Well, he s one of us now. Just like you. MOSCO: Yea, but I m the one doing all the dirty work. Clean the toilet. Mop the floor. Do this! Do that! And I m the lazy louse? LeROACH: Don t let him get to you. MOSCO: I ain t like you, LeRoach. You re around forever. I don t got alot of time, buddy. Some of you get months, years, I get a week or two and I m done. I gotta move quick! You been up on the surface, lately? LeROACH: Not lately. I used to get out to get a little grub sometimes but my wife did most of the shopping. MOSCO: Lucky for you. It s mayhem up there now. Them Mantis ain t no joke. Once you ve seen their wrath you never forget. You see how ugly we can become and how precious it all is. Sophisticated killers. Just when you think everything s fine, SNAP! There goes your wing or worse, (He mimes decapitation) you re two feet under. LeROACH: We are two feet under. MOSCO: We re dying as we speak. LeROACH: We are all born to die. Some of us sooner than later. MOSCO: You don t have to rub it in.
LeROACH: Everything in between is just a mirage. Just a bunch of should ves and could ves. [A burp. Mosco grabs onto LeRoach.] MOSCO: Did you hear that? LeROACH: Let s not start that again. MOSCO: Sounded like a burp. Wait a sec. Did you slurp the juice? LeROACH: No! Besides, who said it was a slurp? That s still up for debate. Even if it was a slurp, do you think I d admit it? MOSCO: Probably not. LeROACH: Neither would you. So let s leave it at that, okay? MOSCO: Sounds good to me. [LeRoach pulls out the map.] LeROACH: According to this, we should- Who am I kidding. I don t care if the lights ever come on again. [LeRoach tosses the map and sits.] MOSCO: You giving up? LeROACH: Haven t you? MOSCO: I gotta find my mosquitoette. I m gonna have nymphs! LeROACH: What about the mantises? Your wing s missing. Stingers cracked. No fight or flight left in you. MOSCO: They didn t take my courage or my effort! LeROACH: Buggie s right. What good are wings if you can t fly? (regarding his wings) My glorified shields.
[LeRoach shrugs. His wings move slightly.] It s like I m saying, (shrugs) whatevs. That s all I got left. (shrugs) Whatevs. MOSCO: Them shields offer you possibility. LeROACH: That s just a fancy word for hope. I m hopeless. (To the heavens) Rochelle! How could you be with him? Til death do us part, remember? It goes against our nature! MOSCO: It s okay, buddy. Nature gives way to evolution. Evolution creeps up when least expected and wammo! What we thought was natural to us is not anymore. We just happen to be the sorry buggers living at the point when evolution is not quite complete. The mutation can hurt but then one day, surprise! We are more than we ever dreamed of! That s the beauty of it all, don t you think? The big surprise. Or at least the possibility for a big surprise. Right now we are living in the moment before the evolutionary bloom! Today we rumble but tomorrow we bloom! We become all the possibilities we ve ever dreamed of! Our shields become our wings! Let s do this!!!!!! LeROACH: It was all my fault. I was too busy sucking up the juice. MOSCO: Look on the bright side. At least you have someone to cheat on you. LeROACH: Thanks. MOSCO: Try being the pub pariah. I ve never been looked upon with admiration by any living thing. LeROACH: Buggie don t see you as no pariah. She s nice to you. MOSCO: Because she feels sorry for me. I ain t dumb. LeROACH: She feels sorry for you because of the way other s treat you, that s all. MOSCO: Come on. Let s keep moving. I ain t got time for contemplation. [LeRoach doesn t budge.]
Come on, let s go. Got to do our duty, remember? We re warriors. LeROACH: I tried to do myself in. MOSCO: What? What are you talking about? LeROACH: In the restroom. One second more and I would ve been a goner. The shaking earth saved me. Funny, huh? Whatever s going on up there saved me. MOSCO: Possibility saved you, Buddy. The maybe turned your way. You ve been given an extra day! Do something with it. I don t know about you but I m gonna fly outta here soon. You can, too. You have wings. So do the others. LeROACH: They don t work anymore. We ve been stuck in the cave too long. MOSCO: Yea, but the possibility is there! Crusty? Not so much. He s a prisoner to his condition. LeROACH: We all are. MOSCO: Only if you believe it. Crusty relishes in it! LeROACH: You know, even if you did fly with one good wing, you d fly in circles. You know that, right? MOSCO: In a spiral, Buddy. I m flying in a spiral as far up as I can and start my own love colony. Gotta start making fairyflies if we re gonna keep bugmanity going. We re all that s left.
MOSCO MONOLOGUE SIDE 2 MOSCO: You think we re the only one s under the sun? See, that s the problem with you crawlers. You re used to looking up at everything. Dodging the gods as they try to step on you, keep you in check. You don t see what s beyond their shadows. I get to fly above them all and I know there s more than what you see. I know there s a mosquitoette or some mutant oval headed something somewhere who s looking for me, too. Out of all the possibilities, all the mosquitoettes that exist, we re gonna find each other. And it s gonna be a thing of beauty! I can see her now. My Queen. Big fat thorax. Smooth abdomen. Honey oozing out of it. Beautiful colorful wings. I come up on her all injured like, she finds a soft spot for me and next thing you know, my antennae is like BAM! Reception restored and just like that we re making fairy flies! Pupas galore! And they ll have fairy flies and so on and so on and so on. That can t happen if I stay down here. We got to help evolution along. We got to start a love colony where everybuggie s free to fly wherever! Love whoever! And we ll all clean our own toilets! Possibility, buddy! Without it, we have no dreams! Without dreams, we only imagine our folly. Imagination and possibility are the sisters of love and a fine mosquitoette is the manifestation of that love. I will cherish her and never neglect her. Come on, LeRoach! Let the spirit move you! Thanks for bringing me along, LeRoach! I let Crusty s badgering almost make me forgot who I was! Meditate with me, buddy. Go into the deep sleep with me so that we may awaken! Come on! Come fly with me! Come fly with me! (singing) Come fly with me, come fly away. LeROACH MONOLOGUE SIDE 3 LeROACH: One night, Rochelle was coming home and she was robbed right outside our door. Killed for a lousy crumb of bread. A crumb she was bringing home to me because I had a little too much juice the night before. All I could hear were her chirps as she fought for her life. I peeked out and I just watched and didn t do a thing. I froze. I was a coward. Then I ran out as fast as I could and ended up back here and drank to my hearts content. I made up the whole story because I wanted all of you to feel sorry for me. (beat) When I went into the tunnel and I saw all them heads, I thought of Rochelle. I thought of all of you. No matter how scary life gets, we have to look at it straight in the eye. We got to put our best leg forward and help those when they can t help themselves. If we don t, then what good are we?
