Barbie Bungee Barbie is an adventure seeker to the max. She loves the thrill of death defying activities. She believes the adrenaline rush makes her hair more lustrous and her waistline thinner, so she is willing to pay big bucks to the company that can give her the most thrilling ride. In the back of her mind though, she wants to be sure that she is really safe. PART I Your goal: Create a bungee line for Barbie that will give her the most thrilling, yet safe, fall from the top of the balcony. Supplies at your disposal: Per team (supplied by me) - meter stick - 10 or so equally sized rubber bands - ipad (with video capability and Desmos app) In the class (supplied by me) - electronic balance - long (20-30 ft) tape measure Supplied by you (the student) - stuffed animal/barbie/shrek/batman (one per team) Table Group Brainstorm (15 minute discussion) What is your plan? (Remember, you don t want Barbie to die.) What kind(s) of data will you collect? Will you do multiple trials? Why/why not? How would that work?
Plan share- out (with class) Potential Outcomes Some other things you might want to consider: *Is it possible to scale up? *How to tie the rubber bands together? *Method for measuring? *How often to measure? *Does weight (of Barbie ) matter?
Review your most recent plan. Tell me exactly how you are going to tackle this challenge and WHY you are doing each step. DO IT and collect your data (You should video/photo your process as you will need it later on.)
What happened? Why? Would you like to change your plan? How? Why/why not? Summary What was the challenge? How did you go about tackling the challenge? What data did you collect? What conclusions can you draw from this data? What does this all mean? How does it all fit together? If you wanted to open your own company, how would you use this data to show that you could provide a safe bungee experience?
Part II Shark Tank Challenge As luck would have it, you have the opportunity to appear on Shark Tank. And, while you don t have a new invention to pitch, you are going to pitch your new Bungee Company. You are seeking $3 million dollars in exchange for 20% of your company. The money will pay for Safety Certification and Licensing AND additional marketing- as you will be opening your first Bungee Co. location next month! The Sharks want to know: *How did you design your system (number of rubber bands, etc.)? *How do you account for not all customers having the same weight? *How can you be sure that you are using enough rubber bands? (Nobody will pay for a boring ride.) *How can you be sure that you don t use too many? (Skulls hitting the floor will crack. The customer will die. Then, you will be sued for negligence and they will loose their investment.) Review the data from your most recent trials. Are you able to answer the Shark s questions? What else do you need to do (or what other data do you need to collect) in order to be able to fully respond to their questions? Revise your most recent design.
DO IT and collect your data What happened this time? Why? Would you like to change your plan? How? Why/why not? The Sharks are having a difficult time understanding your answers to their questions. You gave them some data, but the information is not making sense the way you are presenting it (The Sharks did not pay much attention in math class- so you are going to need to be REALLY CLEAR and TRY AGAIN). How else could you represent this data so that it is easier to understand? How might you collaborate (as a class- not just as a team)?
Some new things to consider. What is a proportional relationship? What do proportional relationships look like when we graph them? What is a best- fit line? Also called a trend line? Is there a way to make relationships that are not proportional, proportional? In other words, is there something you could do to the data? In light of this new information, how can you prove to the Sharks that you know what you are doing? Use data, graphs, charts, and words to convincingly communicate with the panel.
Then, you will be sued for negligence and they will loose their investment.) Potential Resources Graphing, Interpreting and Comparing Proportional Relationships video Graphing, Interpreting, and Comparing Proportional Relationships 2- video Best- fit lines/ trend lines- video eighth- grade- math/cc- 8th- data/cc- 8th- line- of- best- fit/v/interpreting- trend- line GOOGLE FORM for collecting class data M6TMPNqeX3dMYTtuQOCTxBgAA Link to data spreadsheet M6TMPNqeX3dMYTtuQOCTxBgAA What you need to know about Desmos: DESMOs sliders Go to the website Add a slider (play around with it a bit and see how it moves) Go to the + and add a table Enter your data Adjust the slider to get a best fit line
Go to the + and add another set of data (different color dots) Add another slider and adjust Repeat as many times as you feel necessary - - so that you have multiple sets of data (and sliders) Take a SCREEN SHOT and save it someplace safe (like Google Drive or G.C) so that you will have it for your Shark Tank presentation.

TEACHER PAGE for plan share- out and potential outcomes Sample Ideas & Outcomes Category 1: - Jump from the balcony and see what happens. If the jump is not good, try again. Possible outcomes: - Ride is thrilling and you know exactly how many rubber bands you will need. - Ride is not thrilling, but you are not sure of how many more rubber bands are needed - Stuffed animal dies, but you are not sure how many rubber bands to take away. Category 2: - Jump from a lower location and then scale up. Category 3: - Conduct multiple trials from a lower location/collect data- use collected data/trials to scale up/create a proportion/relationship. Possible outcomes: - Same as idea 1, but have a better chance of succeeding and knowing what/how much to change things if the jump is not successful Go Formative link Quick Code FKET499
