Here are 10 more ideas that I love from my friends and family. WHEN NOTHING ELSE IS WORKING GRAB A BOOK! 1- Have a Birthday party with a theme from a book like my sister does and have the book be the party favor. Here are a few invitation ideas.
2- Have your kids make their own library like my friends daughter did. Here are some pictures of what her daughter did. My friend wanted to help and use cute computer library cards made from the computer but her daughter wanted to make them herself. I learned from this that it is ok to let our children make and create. We have blogs and pintrest that sometimes we feel we have to compete with and I feel a lot of times we get caught up in all of that. Keep it simple and let your children run with their imagination. Here are some pictures of here homemade library. Her nickname is Fred and she decided to name her library spelled FREAD. Very creative.
3- I have another friend that over spring break had a Read-A-Thon with her boys. 4- My sister reads scriptures with her family at night and makes sure they all follow along in their scriptures even if they don t read. 5- A great book that came highly recommended is called Reading Magic; Why reading aloud to our children will change their lives forever By: Mem Fox 6- Another friend of mine who is a school teacher has compiled a reading program idea that she has seen over and over become very effective. Basic Steps to Teaching your child to read Begin by choosing a simple book that has very few, easy words. Since your ultimate goal is for your child to read a book by himself, this is where you begin. Avoid frustration by spending only minutes in your daily reading session with your child. Remember to reward him frequently for his successes (stickers, stamps on a paper, etc...). Teach your child each word on the first page until he is able to read the page by himself. This may take several days/weeks depending on the rate with which your child masters the words and also the number of words on a page. Your child will be proud of his success in reading a book!
Here are a few steps for your daily reading practice session: A. Teach each letter name in the first word. You do not need to teach the entire alphabet in order. Begin only with the letters that are pertinent to that particular word. Write each letter on an index card and show it to your child while naming it. Have your child repeat its name. Review the letter names that you have taught previously, building upon what your child has learned. Writing Practice: Show your child the correct way to write the letter. Have him trace some letters that you have written while saying the letter name. Then have him write some of his own letters. This may mean initially that you hold his hand while he holds the pencil and you help him to form the letter. Another method is to cut out felt letters and glue them on an index card. Have the child trace it with his finger feeling the texture as they say the letter name. B. Teach the sound of each letter or letter group. Ask your child to name the letter that you have written on the card again. Teach the sound of that letter and have your child repeat it. Review the letter sounds that you have taught previously, building upon what your child has learned. Writing Practice: Show your child the correct way to write the letter/letters in that sound. Have him trace some letters that you have written while saying the letter names and the sound. Then have him write some of his own letters. C. Teach the word by sounding out the letter or letter group OR teaching the word by sight. Review the letter names that you have taught, having your child repeat after you. Review the letter sounds that you have taught, having your child repeat after you. Write the word on an index card and run your finger under each letter while you make the sound of each letter. Have your child repeat after you. Review the words that you have taught previously, building upon what your child has learned. Writing Practice: Have your child trace words that you have written while saying the word aloud. 7- I feel the best way to become a good reader or lover of reading is to SIMPLY READ! 8- Before my sister lets her girls get their ears pierced they have to read the Book of Mormon
9- Pick a book, read it with your children and plan an adventure out of the book after you have read it. For example after reading Good Night Moon go and look at the moon. It doesn t have to be a big event, I am all about keeping things simple. 10- My husband likes to have every member of our family read a book and once a month at Family Home Evening have everyone report on that book. You could all pick a book on something you are working with in your family or just a book of your own choice.
