The Story of the search The initial point of departure on the quest for forbears commenced with the birth of Henry (Harry) McColl for which the birth certificate of April 28, 1902, was available. This revealed that Harry was the son of Malcolm McColl and Martha Brown who had been married June 28, 1901, at St Michael's Episcopal Church, Govan. However, written in red ink across the regiser was the word Divorced! The address given by Malcolm at the time of his marriage was checked against the census return for 1901 (see below) which revealed the identity of his parents and numerous siblings! West Scotland Street, Kinning Park, Govan. Name Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Married Children Occupation Birthplace Henry McColl Head 43 Married England Margaret McColl Wife 42 Married Plantation Malcolm McColl son 20 Glasgow Mary daughter 18 Glasgow Alexander son 16 Glasgow James son 11 Glasgow Robert son 6 Glasgow John McColl son 4 single Glasgow Margaret McColl daughter 4 single Glasgow Samuel McColl son 2 single Glasgow The 1901 census return allows the calculation of approximate dates of birth for Henry (1858); Margaret (1859); Malcolm (1881); Mary (1883); Alexander (1885); James (1890); Robert (1895); John (1897); Margaret (1897) and Samuel (1899). Family tradition conveyed that Malcolm went to his family in Liverpool after his separation from Martha, and this was confirmed by the 1911 census return (see below). 3

Grafton Street, Dingle, Liverpool, Lancashire. District: Toxteth Park Sub- district: Toxteth Park South West Enumeration district: 20 Name Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Married Children Occupation Birthplace Henry McColl Head 53 Married Boilermaker Carlisle Cumberland Margaret McColl Wife 51 Married Glasgow Malcolm son 31 Boarder Boilermaker Glasgow McColl John McColl son 14 single Cable messenger Glasgow Margaret daughter 14 single Glasgow McColl Samuel McColl son 12 single Glasgow Here, Malcolm is identified as a Boarder with his parents, and his occupation is given as a Boilermaker. Moreover, Henry s place of birth is given as Carlisle. This information lead to the identification of Henry s birth certificate in the English General Register as August 9, 1857, at 10 South George St, Carlisle (it should be remembered that ages derived from the census returns should only be regarded as approximations). Henry s parents were Alexander Campbell McColl and Ann Ivison. Armed with the information from Henry s birth certificate it was possible to locate an 1861 census entry for the family in Carlisle. 4

Union Street, Botchergate, Carlisle. Name Alexander McColl Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Married Children Occupation Birthplace Head 30 Married Boilermaker Scotland Anne McColl Wife 24 Married Samuel McColl son 5 single Cumberland, Carlisle Northumberland Shields, Henry McColl son 3 single Scholar Alexander McColl son 1 single Cumberland, Carlisle Cumberland, Carlisle In 1861 Henry had two brothers Samuel (born in North Shields, Tyneside) and Alexander. This is strong evidence that the family migrated from Scotland to England, and returned to Scotland and then once more to England! Given this information census entries were sought for the 1891, 1881 and 1871 census returns for Kinning Park, Govan where the families of Alexander Campbell McColl and Henry McColl were successfully identified West Scotland Street, Kinning Park, Govan. 7 Pollok Street, Tradeston, Govan. Name Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Married Children Occupation Birthplace Alexander Lismore, Head 38 Married Boilermaker McCall Argyleshire Anne McCall Wife 35 Married England Henry McCall son 14 single England Alexander McCall son 12 single England John McCall son 10 single Scholar Carlisle, England The variation in spelling of the surname McColl given as McCall in the 1871 census return is probably attributable to the returning officer writing down what he heard rather than any misidentification. In order to ascertain the marriage of Alexander Campbell McColl and Ann Ivison it is necessary to obtain the birth certificate of one of their children who is born post-1855 (when civil registration begins) and born in Scotland (date and place of parents marriage is not recorded on English marriage certificates). Fortunately, Mary Ann McColl is recorded in the 1881 census return and her birth certificate was obtained. She was born on April 21, 1871, at 45 Pollok Street, Tradeston, Govan. Clearly, she is also the Mary Ann McColl recorded in the 1881 census return for the same address. The certificate also revealed that Alexander Campbell McColl and Ann Ivison were married on March 17, 1855, at Gretna, Dumfrieshire. The date of the marriage occurred in the first year of civil registration in Scotland and a search of the statutory register was made. Unfortunately, no entry was identified. Neither was there an appropriate entry in the English General register in any adjoining administrative districts. One significant fact was that the marriage took place at Gretna, which may indicate that the marriage was irregular and not recorded by civil registration. Ultimately, the marriage certificate was located in the register of irregular marriages for Alison s Bank Toll, Gretna (one of several locations where irregular marriages were performed in this period). Unfortunately, there was very little new information gained from the marriage certificate beyond the fact that Ann was illiterate, but Alexander was not! Extensive searches were then carried out in the statutory registers in Scotland and the General register in England in order to locate either Alexander s or Ann s death certificate to no avail! The 1871 census return lists Alexander s place of birth as Lismore, Argyleshire. Lismore is an island off the west coast of Scotland that forms part of the parish of Lismore and Appin. Given the variation in age related information that Alexander had provided to the census ennumerators over the years, it appears likely that he was born approximately in the period An extensive search of the Lismore and Appin Old Parish Registers (OPR s) was undertaken and the most likely entry was identified as August 2 nd 1828 a son to Samuel McColl (Parochial Schoolmaster) and Janet Campbell was baptized. Whilst likely, this was by no means certain identification. However, Alexander was in 7

Carlisle in 1861 so could not be in Lismore at the same time and the 1861 census return for the family of Samuel McColl confirms ths (see below) Killandrist Lismore & Appin Argyle. Name Samuel McColl Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Head 72 Married Janet McColl Wife 60 Married Married Children Occupation Birthplace Parochial Schoolmaster Agnes McColl daughter 36 single Domestic servant Donald McColl son 30 single Inspector of the Poor Appin, Argyll Lismore, Argyll Lismore, Argyll Lismore, Argyll Similarly, Alexander married in 1855 so may well have been at home in Lismore in 1851, and indeed is listed in the 1851 and 1841 census returns (see below) Killeondrist Lismore & Appin Parish (525) Argyle. 9 1841 Killeondrist Lismore & Appin Parish (525) Argyle. Name Relationship to head of family Age of males Age of females Married Occupation Whether born in same country? Samuel McColl Head 50 Schoolmaster Yes Janet McColl Wife 30 Yes Yes Donald McColl son 15 No Magdalene McColl Alexander McColl daughter 10 son 8 Mary McColl daughter 6 Robert Perry 5 Yes Yes Yes Yes Whilst encouraging, this evidence is at best circumstantial there is considerable uncertainty over which year Alexander was born. Further, Alexander Campbell McColl seems to entirely disappear from the written record in the late 1880 s and yet there is no record of his death in Scotland or England & Wales. This may indicate that he and Ann (and also perhaps some of the younger members of his family) may have emigrated. This certainly appears to be the case as a death certificate was located in the registers of Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA for Ann McColl (Ivison) who died on May 1, Her address is given as 15 Washington Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Further research also uncovered the naturalization papers for Alexander McColl from 1893 also residing in Washington Street. Hence, there can be little doubt that Alexander Campbell McColl and Ann (Ivison) emigrated to the USA in 1888, and resided there for the remainder of their lives. Furthermore the date of birth given on Alexander s naturalization papers is July 31, 1828, which is certainly the same person who was baptized on Lismore August 2 nd 1828 the son of Samuel and Janet McColl. A search of the Lismore & Appin OPR s for the marriage of Samuel and Janet was not successful (the registers only commence from the 1760 s). Samuel died in 1862 on Lismore and is buried in Lismore churchyard. His death certificate revealed that his parents were Hugh McColl (Tenant farmer) and Mary McLeran at Kenlochlaigh, Appin. 9

Directions for further research 1. The 1900 census return for Cambridge, MA, USA should be accessed to establish further evidence as to the identity of Alexander Campbell McColl. 2. Transcriptions of the monumental Inscriptions in Lismore Churchyard should be sought to try an establish further evidence of (i) the parentage of Samuel McColl (ii) the date and place of marriage between Samuel McColl and Janet Campbell. 3. A search of the GRO for the death certificates of Henry McColl and Malcolm McColl. 4. A search of the index of Wills and Testaments (Scotland). 5. A search of any surviving tenancy agreements for the Kenlochlaigh estate. 10
