Chapter 4 William H. and Estella (Beals) Milligan/Gibson Richard L. Kenyon 32 Almond Tree Ln, Irvine CA rlkenyon@cox.net August 23, 2008 Introduction Estella Beals and her husband William H. Milligan were children of pioneer Jasper County, Iowa settlers. They lived virtually all of their lives in Jasper County. Estella had five children by her first husband William H. Milligan, and after his death she became stepmother to the children of her second husband Bert Gibson. When Estella died a few days short of age 100, she was survived by 23 grandchildren and 93 great-grandchildren. Estella and William are the parents of Loren Milligan, who married Iris Kenyon. They are the subjects of a separate chapter. Photo of Estella taken in 1933 (age 60) Collection of Teresa Schweinebart 4 William and Estella Milligan Page 1

Estella s youth Estella Cordelia Beals was born August 18, 1873 in Kellogg, Jasper County, Iowa, to David and Chelley (Herring) Beals, who are the subjects of a separate chapter. The name Estella was frequently shortened to Stella. Estella often told a story about meeting Jessie James during her childhood. Here is the story, as told to her granddaughter Teresa Schweinebart. According to Teresa, Estella swore on her father s grave that it was true. Estella was about 12 years old, and was helping her momma in the garden when two men rode down the lane on the biggest black horses she had ever seen. They told Estella's momma that they were camped down by the creek and had caught some fish, but had no skillet to fry them in. They wanted to know if they could buy an old skillet and some coffee off of Estella's mother. She told them that she had many skillets and could part with one and they didn't need to bother paying for it. They walked to the house with Estella and her mother, talking about how pretty the land was and so quiet. Estella stayed outside while her mother went in the house for the skillet and coffee. The younger of the two men asked Estella if she would like to ride his horse. She jumped at the chance and rode him around the yard. When her mother returned she gave them the skillet and coffee. They thanked her and rode away. They told her father the story at supper and how nice the two men were and that she got to ride his horse. The next morning, out on the front step was the skillet with a gold piece in it. The next day a lawman showed up at their door wanting to know if they had seen two strange men. He showed them the wanted poster and it was Frank and Jesse James. Estella's mother told the lawman that she had not seen any strangers around there in a very long time. He rode off. Estella's mother told her not to say anything to anyone about what just happened, and she said she was about 25 years old before she ever told anyone about what happened. First marriage: William H. Milligan At age 17, Estella married William Henry Milligan. The marriage took place on December 31, 1890, in Kellogg. William was the son of Jacob H. and Maria (Hopton) Milligan, who are the subjects of a separate chapter. William was born in Monroe County, Ohio. The accepted date is May 7, 1848 but the year might really have been 1849, based on an age of 1 reported in the 1850 census. William and Estella were farmers. William also made and repaired wagon wheels, shoed horses, and cut down timber, which was sold to a local man to be sawed into lumber. William was quite a whittler he could make anything out of a piece of wood. He was most noted for his birds. He gave the carvings to his children and to neighbor children. Estella took pride in her personal appearance. She always wore a nice dress and 4 William and Estella Milligan Page 2

jewelry she loved jewelry. One of her daughter-in-laws asked her why she was dressed so fancy to do chores. Her reply: I might have to do the washing, cook the food, and sweep the floor, but I'm gonna look good while I'm doin it! Estella worked on the farm along side William, but she always found time to get together with her sister Belva Fuller to make quilts. They were hand-sown piece quilts that were filled with goose feathers. They were made for family members, weddings, and new babies. They worked all summer so that by the time fall came they had new quilts for the winter. William H. Milligan, before his marriage Estella, date unknown Both from the collection of Debbie Yslava via Teresa Schweinebart Death of William Milligan William Milligan died at age 63 on May 4, His death was the result of a tragic accident. William and his son Loren were cutting down trees when a large limb fell and hit William on the head. He was unconscious for roughly 12 hours. When he came to, they knew that something was seriously wrong. His head was starting to swell and the pain was severe. He didn't remember things and he had hallucinations. The doctors did not have any cure. He was sent to Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Henry County, Iowa. Three weeks after the accident he died at the hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried in the Metz Cemetery (now Sugar Grove). No gravestone can be found today, but at this writing his descendants are planning to erect a new stone. 4 William and Estella Milligan Page 3

Estella was left with five children still at home, ranging in age from 6 to 16. After William died she moved into what was called the old Sinkler house about a mile from where their daughter-in-law Iris lived. Children of William and Estella. William and Stella had six children Twins 1. Unnamed infant Died at birth. Believed to be buried beneath a stone with no name in the plot at Union Chapel Cemetery belonging to Estella s parents David and Chelley Beals. 2. 7 Estella s second marriage: Bert Gibson Estella married Albert Bert Gibson on February 17, Bert was a widower with four living children. Estella became the stepmother to these children. In the 1920 census, at Estella and Bert s home we find two of Estella s children still living at home, plus two of Bert s children. The other two of Bert s children were at Bert s parents, who also lived in Baxter. Whether they were just visiting or on an extended stay, we do not know. Albert Bert Gibson (Left) and twin brother Alfred collection of Debbie Yslava via Teresa Schweinebart Bert was born November 22, 1876 in Jasper County, Iowa, the son of George and Emma Gipson, emigrants from England. Bert was originally named Albert Gipson but changed the spelling of his surname to Gibson. Bert had a twin brother named Alfred. According to a family story, they looked just alike and would play tricks on Estella. For example, Alfred would come in and sit down to eat dinner, leave the house, then Bert would come in and say Aren't we going to eat dinner today? It is said that she sewed a patch on Bert's back pocket so she could tell who was who. 8 Bert was first married, on April 13, 1901, to Ella Vansice, the daughter of John and Malinda (Richmond) Vansice, of Baxter, Iowa. Ella was born June 18, 1877, in Iowa City, Iowa, and died at age 36 on May 4, 1914, in Baxter, Iowa. She is buried in Restland Cemetery, Baxter. They had 6 children: 1. John Gibson Born about 1905 in Baxter, Iowa. Died in California at an unknown date. 2. Marvin Gibson Born April 9, 1903 in Baxter. Died January 2, 1976, and buried in Restland Cemetery, Baxter. Married Cora Stratton. 3. Merrill Gibson Born April 7, 1905 in Ira, Jasper County, Iowa. Died Jan 12, 1983, and buried in Colfax Cemetery. Colfax, Iowa. Married Irene Maher. 4. Died March 31, 1912 in Baxter, Iowa After Bert married Estella, they lived on the Gibson farm until the house burned down in They rebuilt on the same land. Bert died November 28, 1940, and was buried in Restland Cemetery next to his first wife. There is no stone. 4 William and Estella Milligan Page 6

Estella s Last Years After Bert s death, Estella lived on her son Loren s farm. She was still going strong in 1963, when her 90 th birthday was celebrated by a party attended by 78 of her descendants and relatives. Estella moved to Collins in 1965 where she lived with her son Harold and his wife Mabel. Her mind remained sharp, but after about a year and a half her health declined to the point where Mabel was unable to take care of her. Estella then moved to the Oak Park Manor, a nursing home for women, in the town of Nevada, Story County, Iowa. Estella at 98 collection of Debbie Yslava via Teresa Schweinebart Estella was 16 days short of 100 years old when she died August 2, She was buried in Restland Cemetery in Baxter, Iowa. 10 Acknowledgements I am very grateful to Estella s great granddaughter Teresa Schweinebart for supplying the family stories and much of the biographical detail. Much of her wording has been used verbatim. After a long search for surviving photographs, most of the photos in this chapter were found by Teresa in the collection of Debbie Yslava, who is a descendant of Estella s daughter-in-law Hazel. Newspaper obituaries were obtained for me by Helen Whannel. Nancy Waterhouse supplied data from the Family History Library in Salt Lake. Sources Information from Teresa Schweinebart: Teresa Schweinebart of Baxter, Iowa, grew up next door to her grandmother Iris Milligan, and her great-grandmother Estella Gibson lived with Iris for a time. In addition to her. Birth of Estella: Obituary of Estella Gibson, cited below. The birth date is consistent with the age in 1880 census, and month and year in 1900 census. The year agrees with the cemetery record. Census records for the family: 1850 OH, Monroe Co, Clarington, p 512. William, age 1, with parents Jacob and Maria Milliken WI, Green Co, Sylvester, p 304. Marriage to William Milligan: Jasper Co, IA, Marriage Register, Book 1, sheet 112. Birth of William Milligan: The date is as accepted by his family. The year might really be 1 year later, based on age 1 in 1850 census, and age 10 in 1860 census. The 1900 census gives May 1847, but the year does not agree with the earlier census records. It is assumed that his birthplace is the same as the location in which William was found at age 1 in the 1850 census. Children of Estella and William Milligan: Data on Loren Milligan is from sources given in the chapter on Loren and Iris Milligan. Data on the remaining children is from Caleb Beals, His Ancestors and Descendants, by Donna Clark, This was checked, and a few missing dates obtained, from the following sources: 1) Obituaries: Estella s, cited below and Carl and Harold from newspaper clippings in the collection of Debbie Yslva. 2) Census records. 3) Social 4 William and Estella Milligan Page 8

Security Death Index: Earl , Harold , Carl , Pearl Beebe ) California Death Index: Pearl Beebe. We know from the 1900 and 1910 census that one child died young. The data on this child is from family sources via Teresa Schweinebart. Family stories: Teresa Schweinebart from conversations with Estella, and interviews with oldest living relatives in Death of William Milligan: Henry County IA Death Record, Vol. 3, p Same date from his obituary in the Baxter New Era, May 9, 1912, and the obituary of his wife, Baxter New Era, Nov 28, Cause of William s death: Around January, 2007, Teresa Schweinebart interviewed three of his oldest living descendants. They independently told the same story about the accident and head injury that caused the delusions. William s obituary in the Baxter New Era was copied from the Newton News and is very misleading. It completely leaves out the fact that his hallucinations and death were the result of an accident. Burial of William Milligan: He was buried in Metz cemetery according to his obituary, but no stone or burial record has been found. Some stones were lost during a period when the cemetery was abandoned. A lot with 8 spaces was owned by his father Jacob Milliken. Jacob s stone has been found, so we know he is buried there. It is likely that Jacob s wife Mariah is also buried there, although there is no record. That leaves six spaces unaccounted for, and William may well be in one of them. A detailed inventory of known burials in Metz was posted on the web by Barbara Hug and can be accessed via the Jasper County Genweb. Marriage to Bert Gibson: Obituary of Estella Gibson. Agrees with family records from Teresa Schweinebart. Birth of Bert Gibson: Family records. Agrees with Nov 1876 in 1900 census, where he is living with his parents. First marriage of Bert: Family records. Agrees with 1910 census. Wife still living with parents in 1900 census, birth date given as Jun Death record of Ella Gibson, Jasper Co., IA (includes parents names). Obituary of Ella (Vansice) Gibson: Baxter New Era, May 21, 1914, p. 1. Children from Bert s first marriage: Family records, partially verified as follows: Census: 1910, Social Security death index: Hazel Pyle , Merrill , Marvin Cemetery records: Colfax Cemetery, Jasper Co, Iowa, Merrill and Irene Gibson block D, lot 7. Death of Bert: Two obituaries of Bert Gibson appeared in the same issue of the Baxter New Era, Dec 4, 1940 (One was probably contributed by relatives of his first wife.) Restland Cemetery record, Jasper County Genealogical Society. 90 th birthday party: Newspaper clipping from an unidentified local newspaper (likely the Baxter New Era) from the collection of Debbe Yslava. Cared for by Harold and Mabel Milligan: Personal knowledge of Teresa Schweinebart. Collins Retirement home: The Baxter New Era, Aug 30, 1972, p. 2, reported that Mrs. Stella Gibson will celebrate her 99 th birthday August 18 th and would enjoy hearing from all her old friends and relatives. Her address is Collins Retirement Home, Collins, Iowa Oak Park Manor: The Baxter New Era, Aug 9, 1972, p. 1, reported that Mrs. Estella Gibson, Collins, was moved by ambulance to her new home at Oak Park Manor, Nevada [Story Co, IA].
