1 Bible Road Trip ~ covers 2 Kings chapters 10-17; the fall of Israel. This week, we are studying 2 Kings, the seventh historical book. 1 Kings and 2 Kings were once a single book, just like 1 and 2 Samuel. 2 Kings is a historical narrative with biographies of nearly 30 kings. The book covers nearly 300 years and continues the history of the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah up until soon after the fall of Jerusalem. 1 and 2 Kings were most likely written during the exile, though they could have been written just afterward. The author is explaining the cause of the exile to the remnant of God s people. As such, he is far more concerned with how faithful each king is to the Lord than he is with any political or historical issues. This week we see a continuation in the theology of retribution based on the Sinai Covenant in Deuteronomy - the idea that obedience to God is followed by blessing, while disobedience is met with failure. We also see an increasing instability in the nation of Israel. This ends in the exile of the nation into the Assyrian Empire. It is important that children grasp why Israel is exiled, and the manner in which Israel violated their covenant (the Mosaic Covenant) with God. For Lower Grammar students, the reading doesn t cover the exile of Israel. If you are using What s in the Bible with Buck Denver as a part of your Bible Road Trip lessons, the DVD does a great job of explaining. If not, you will want to explain this aspect of Israel s history to your children. We also witness King Ahaz of Judah turn from the Lord s aid to seek the help of the Babylonians. Next week, we ll read about how this decision, in concert with the disobedience of the Judeans, helped bring about Judah s exile into the Babylonian Empire. We re introduced to a few new prophets this week, such as Isaiah and Jonah. We ll be reading a chapter in Isaiah to provide some context, and to help us look forward to the coming of the King of Kings in Matthew. In the Grammar stages, our prayer focus this week is Indonesia, and for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages we ll study Wallis & Fortuna, and Tonga.
