4 HISTORY OF MONGOLIAN POPULATION CENSUSES 1969, 1979 and 1989 censuses were developed in accordance with methodologies recommended by Commission of Economic Mutual Assistance for socialist countries. Main features of these censuses: Population censuses and housing censuses were conducted together UN recommendation on periodicity 4

19 New Plan to cooperate with IPUMS: Establishing microdata set for 1956 population census 20 percent sample of total household data 1956 census 9 months will be required. Planned period for this exercise: November 2010 August 2011 Materials of 170 thousand persons will be sorted out. The comparability of data with other censuses will be ensured.

20 New Plan to cooperate with IPUMS: Establishing microdata set from 1956 population census A contract with the National Archive Office to obtain a permission to use the census materials; Selection of operators for recoding and data entry and conduct trainings; Recruitment of a programmer and data processing staff; A contract with a translator; Arrangement of the questionnaires of the 1956 Census according administrative classifications of the capital city, aimag, and soum, and determination of number of households by each soum; Sampling from archive materials; Extract sampled household and individual questionnaires to make them available at the NSO; Setting up a system for re-coding the questionnaires;

21 Establishing microdata set, 1956 Development and testing of software for data entry, verification, and processing; All indicators except for age and sex will be recoded; Supplement of GIS coding; Data entry and re-entry, verification, and processing of sampled HH and individuals forms; Submission of the files aggregated, along with other supporting materials to the IPUMS; Return the census materials to the National Archive.

22 Importance of the Integrated Global Census Microdata Initiatives Global use of valuable data on the census; Creation of microdata sets of several censuses Confident and safe storage of them; Prevention of census data from any loss and eradication due to unprecedented situations; Study and experiences/practices sharing to establish and utilize integrated census database;
