Nau mai, haere mai ki te taumata. As you arrive We seek to preserve all the taoka we hold for future generations. So that all taoka are properly protected, we ask that you: place your bags in the lockers provided leave all food and drink including water bottles in the lockers (we have a lunchroom off the foyer which everyone is welcome to use) bring any materials you need for research and some ID in with you sign the Readers Register each day Beginning your research Most of the commonly used genealogical sources available at the Hocken Collections can be found on microfiche or in the Ready Reference section of the main reference area on the ground floor. Please ask staff if you need help locating any of these. We hold numerous other sources both published and unpublished in our closed stacks, and these can be searched and requested through the Hocken s Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs). There are two different OPACs: for books, theses, journals, magazines, maps, and audiovisual material, use the University of Otago Library catalogue; for archives & manuscripts, you will need to consult Hākena Upstairs on the first floor in Pictorial Collections, some photographs are available for viewing in the Reader Access file, but you will need to ask staff to help you locate further photographs, as well as all pictures, paintings and posters. 2

General Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Internet Genealogy Service This site provides access to the IGI (International Genealogical Index), and the LDS Library catalogue, as well as the Ancestral file. There is also access to the United States 1880 census and those for Britain and Canada, New Zealand General Te Puna Web Directory Genealogy The National Library of New Zealand s subject access to internet sites. A general access point for NZ genealogy. It includes many of the sites listed in this guide Te Puna Web Directory Maori: History and Whakapapa The National Library of New Zealand s comprehensive list of significant sites history and whakapapa/. Papers Past National Library of New Zealand digital collection of selected New Zealand newspapers and periodicals AtoJs online This website contains digitised reports from selected volumes of the Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives bin/atojs. Archway Online catalogue of Archives New Zealand See their useful research guides at and manuals. Dictionary of New Zealand Biography This website contains over 3,000 biographies of New Zealanders who have ʹmade their markʹ on this country. Some countries have individual sites of their own, while others remain part of their parent regional sites Christchurch City Libraries. Cemeteries and Cemetery Records Contains links to online New Zealand cemetery databases s/. Local Government Online Cemetery Search pages This page lists Council web pages containing burials data meteries_search_models.aspx. Press Death Notices List of names The Death Notices List of Names is for 21st century death notices from 2000 onwards. It lists the name and the date that the death notice appeared in The Press press/promotions/reader services/ /death Notices List of Names. You then need to look at the newspapers in the library to see the death notices. Births, Deaths and Marriages Historical Records NZ Marriage Witness Indexes (also includes links to UK & Australian indexes) Varcoe s New Zealand Marriages Index Use in conjunction with the microfiche Marriages Indexes published by the New Zealand Registrar Generalʹs Office, it allows the user to match up brides with grooms 4

Maori Land Court This is the New Zealand court that hears matters relating to Maori land. Maori Land Court Judgments, mainly from the Maori Appellate Court, are now available through this website. These include Maori Appellate Court decisions and some Lower Court reserved decisions, previously published in Tai Whati, dating from 1958 to Maori Appellate Court decisions from 1986 are also available Pātengi Rarunga Whenua Māori / Māori Land Information Database The Māori Land Information Base (MLIB) is used to locate individual Māori land blocks on a computer generated map. It contains Māori Land Court information about Māori freehold land, which the Māori Land Court in consultation with Māori has approved for release on the Internet Maori Land Legislation database Joint ownership of copyright belongs to Dr David V Williams, University of Auckland, and The University of Auckland Library. The database provides a summary of all New Zealand legislation from 1840 to 1995 (including private and local Acts) which has explicitly dealt with Maori people and Maori land. It also gives brief notes on the historical context and the impact of each Act cited, with references to other Government publications and law cases wpd/mll/basic.htm. 6
