1 Introduction My mother was Dorothy Irene Klinger. Her parents were Edwin (Ed) Charles Klinger and Irene Mary Wrightstone. 1 Ed s father was Charles Edwin Klinger (Jr.), the oldest child born to Charles Edwin Klinger (Sr.) and Malinda Jane Daniels. Charles E. Klinger Sr. was the 6 th child born to John A. Klinger and Susanna Romberger. 2 John A. Klinger s parents were Johann Peter Klinger and Catherine Steinbruch. Peter s 3 family line belongs to Johann Phillip Klinger, whose family line can be traced back to his 16 th century ancestral roots in the regions of Rielingshausen and Wuertenburg Germany. 4 Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. ( ) Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. 5 was born April to John A. Klinger and Susanna Romberger in the area of Gratz located in Lykens Township Dauphin County Pennsylvania. During this time the town of Gratz was the largest town in the remote northern tip of Dauphin County. When Charles was six years old his family were living in the Millersburg area of Upper Paxtang Township, Dauphin County; a small town bordering the Susquehanna River. Charles s father was a miller for the local grain mill. By 1870 the family moved to Lykens in Washington Township, bordering Mifflin Township near Berrysburg Dauphin County Pennsylvania. While in the Lykens and Berrysburg area in 1873, 21 old Charles married 20 year old Malinda Jane Daniels. 7 The Daniels family lived very close to Charles s family in Washington and Mifflin township borders, not far from Berrysburg. It is these areas were Charles and Malinda started their family. Malinda Jane Daniels 8 was born July 15 th 1851 to Bennevell (Benjamin) F. Daniels and Mary M. Adams in Lykens, 9 Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania; most likely in and around this same northern area of Dauphin County. Since as early as 1850, John s father worked in the milling trade, and as a farmer and farm laborer trades. Charles Sr. would follow as a laborer in these same trades, even briefly unemployed in 1880 as a coal miner. The family made their livelihood in and around the townships and towns that surrounded their family s roots. Charles and Malinda lived in Lykens Borough area of Lykens Township Northern Dauphin County with their children Charles Jr., Ida Pearl, and William Elmer. The largest coal company in Lykens area of Wiconisco Township was the Lykens Valley Coal Company. Charles and Malinda had eight children. 10 i. Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. ( ) ii. Ida Pearl Klinger ( ) iii. William Elmer Klinger ( ) iv. Albert J. Klinger ( ) v. Harry Victor Klinger ( ) vi. James Franklin Klinger ( ) vii. Unknown, died prior to 1900 viii. Unknown, died prior to 1900

2 Shortly after 1880, Charles moved his family to Philadelphia, where their son Albert was born in By 1885 the family moved to Harrisburg Pennsylvania, where in February 1886 their son Harry would be born. Charles s brother, John W. Klinger, was already in Harrisburg by 1877, and may have been the first Klinger from my mother s line to live in the city. No other Klinger was listed in the Harrisburg directories until Charles Sr. arrived in late By 1886 Charles Sr. and his brother Jonas appeared in the Harrisburg directory. John W. Klinger suddenly drops off, and a Mary Klinger starts being listed, but I m not sure who she is. The name, Jonas, also disappear in 1887, and a Mary continues to be listed. Mary may be a wife of John or Jonas. These would be different times for Charles and Malinda. For a few years they lived at 7 Lochiel Street, so named for the Lochiel Iron Works 11 located south of Harrisburg, just across the Steelton Borough line. 12 From 1892 to 1894 Charles Sr. s family lived at 819 South Front Street Harrisburg, and he was still listed as a laborer. In 1893 Charles Jr. begins to be listed with his father, both as laborers. Charles Sr. is listed, and his son was listed as a (Jr.). 13 From 1895 to 1900 the Harrisburg directory listed a Charles E. Klinger and Sons, Charles Jr., Ida P., and William E. Klinger living at 124 Hanna Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Both father and son were listed as grocers at 126 Hanna Street, and William E. was listed as a driver. Charles and his son Charles Jr. had a small grocer at 126 Hanna Street in Harrisburg, which was next door to their home at 124 Hanna Street. The homes located at 124 and 126 Hanna Street is in present day Shipoke of South Harrisburg Pennsylvania. In 1960 homes in the Shipoke area were demolished for the Interstate 83 2 nd and front street ramps. The homes of 124 and 126 Hanna Street were demolished, and would have been located near the railroad tracks Living with Charles and Malinda in 1900 were Charles Jr., his wife Emma and their six year old daughter Ethel. Also living with Charles Sr. and Malinda were their sons Albert, Harry, and James, who were listed as attending school. Both Charles Sr. and Jr. worked with fruits and produce, listed in a census record as a green grocer. The family lived on Hanna Street until about 1904, when Charles Jr. began working as a confectioner and living away from his parents. Charles Sr. began working as a laborer for a local Iron Company. By 1910 Charles was in Los Angeles California living in a boarding home, while he continued to work as an iron worker. Malinda was living with Albert and his family. In the 1910 census Malinda identified herself as a widow. I m not certain why Charles and Malinda were not living together. In 1912 Charles Sr. was back in Harrisburg working as a salesman, and he continued to not live with Malinda. Malinda and her youngest children had moved in with her son Albert J. Klinger and his new wife at 403 Vernon Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Malinda lived with Albert to about 1916, when she moved in with another son Harry and his wife.
