Ancestors of Place
Ancestors Three Types Ancestors of Blood Ancestors of Spirit Ancestors of Place Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 1
Ancestors of Blood Those with whom you share DNA. Genealogy and Family History can help you learn and connect with Ancestors of Blood. DNA Testing can provide corrections and new direction in your research. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 2
Ancestors of Spirit Those who have affected your spirit. Family History For example, Grampa Dick taught me to fish and instilled in me a love of fishing. Stories - For example, An old beatnik woman I met in San Pedro, talked about life and death Adoptee Genealogy Eg., My foster father Duane taught me the importance of choosing your battles. He & his ancestors are important to me. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 3
Ancestors Blood and Spirit May Overlap or May Not Example: My Grandfather Brown is both and Ancestor of Blood and an Ancestor of Spirit because the relationship I had with him affected the ways in which I relate to Nature and my relationship with the Universe. My Grandfather Roberts is not a Ancestor of Spirit because I never met him. I know of our genealogical and genetic relationships, but he has not directly affected my spirit, my understanding of the Universe, nor my relationships with others. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 4
Ancestors of Place Our connections and understanding of our environment. Who developed the place where I live. How did the features (mountains, lakes, rivers, etc.) of your place affect the people? How did the people of your place affect the features. People of your place might become Ancestors of Spirit with understanding. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 5
Where you live House Block Street City County State Who were the owners of your house? Who built it? What was your block like before it was built. Who lived there before? Who were the native inhabitants? Who or what was your street named for? Why? Who or what was your city/county/state named for? When? Why? Who were the people who helped create it? Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 6
What is Important? Try Wikipedia History Geography Neighborhoods Sites of Interest Notable People History will often tell how it came to be named. Geography will often tell of key rivers, highways, lakes and other features. Neighborhoods will often give insight into how the place developed and insight into ethnic influences. Sites of Interest may give you places to explore and learn more. Notable People may give you areas to explore further. Did the location or other people have a profound influence on them. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 7
What is Nearby? Try Google Maps Zoom in to your house then zoom out What are the three closest green places identified? Park, Cemetery, Golf Course? What are the three closest blue places identified? Lake, River, Ocean. What are the three closest brown places identified? School, Academy, Center? Search for Things to See (City, County, State). Search for Historic Sites (City, County, State). Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 8
It s not all on the Internet Visit your nearest Historical Societies (City, County, State) Visit your nearest Museums (Historical, Art, Military, etc.) What do they find important. Question: If they have an Emergency Plan, what are identified as their items that need to be saved first? What collections most resonate with you, and why? Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 9
Historical Maps Historical maps can provide a window into the past. Try to find a map within each 50-year period of your location. What do the maps show were important at the various times. What is different from today? How does that affect you? Who discovered it, who named it, who left their mark and energy on it. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 10
Reminder - Purpose The purpose of learning what and where is to learn When Why How And most importantly Who. Who discovered it, who named it, who left their mark and energy on it. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 11
Related Exercises Make a map of your neighborhood. Enjoy visiting your closest state park. Visit the nearest monument/statue to you. Walk a walking trail near you. Journal or Blog about your experiences. Journal or Blog about your Ancestors of Place. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 12
Questions It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end. Ursula K. Le Guin. Ancestors of Place - By Tony Taylor 13
