1 The Gospel according to Matthew NT 2700 Fall Semester, Matthew R. Akers, Ph.D. Office Phone at MABTS: Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary I. COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this course is to promote a thorough grasp of the Gospel According to Matthew. This course will give attention to historical background, authorship, the date of composition, and a verse-by-verse exposition of the biblical text. II. TEXTBOOKS The Holy Bible. Each student is required to read the Gospel According to Matthew in order to receive course credit. The New American Standard Bible, Updated Edition will be used by the professor in lectures. Reading should be current with material covered in course lectures. Blomberg, Craig L. Matthew. Vol. 22 in The New American Commentary. Edited by David S. Dockery. Nashville: Broadman, Reading should be current with material covered in course lectures. LOGOS Scholar's Library ( This digital collection of texts and tools for Bible study is required for all New Testament classes at MABTS. The student will become aware of introductory issues which are pertinent to the study of the Gospel According to Matthew. 2. The student will be able to articulate the key themes which are found in the Gospel according to Matthew. 3. The student will be able to apply the teachings of Matthew to his/her personal life as well as to communicate them to others.

2 2 IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Late Work: All work is due at the beginning of class on the day stated, whether you are present or not. The penalty for late work is 3 points per calendar day. No late work will be accepted after three school days. Syllabus The student must: 1) read the syllabus in its entirety; and 2) sign the last page of this document to confirm that reading has been completed. This affirmation must be submitted to the professor Tuesday, August 26 in order to avoid a loss of 2% from the final grade. Daily Work Regular assignments include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1) Bible Reading. Each student must read Matthew in the Bible version of his/her choice. This reading must be concurrent with the professor's lectures. On the final, each student will be required to affirm that this assignment has been completed in its entirety. 2) Textbook Reading. This reading must be concurrent with the professor's lectures. On the final, each student will be required to affirm that this assignment has been completed in its entirety. Daily Participation Every student is expected to participate regularly during class time. A percentage of the daily grade (see grading below) will be determined by one s daily participation. Quizzes Quizzes will be given throughout the course of the term. Usually quizzes will be announced ahead of time, but pop quizzes may be given. Examinations There will be a total three examinations during the course of the semester. Students must begin taking each test as soon as class begins.

3 3 Paper (10 pages) This paper will be typed and written according to Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 8 th edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2013). The composition should include at least ten citations of books, articles, or essays, and include at least two journal references. Nine pages will be at best 90%. Possible topics: An exegesis of a passage in Matthew A key theological doctrine addressed in Matthew The authorship or date of Matthew The Sermon on the Mount The New Covenant as presented in Matthew The usage and/or purpose of OT quotations in Matthew A topic may be proposed, but the instructor must approve it. V. GRADING 1. Exam 1: 20% 5. Paper: 15% 2. Exam 2: 20% 6. Reading: 5% 3. Exam 3: 20% 7. Participation: 5% 4. Quizzes: 15% Grade point averages are determined on a 12-point grading system. The grade point value of each letter grade is: A quality points per semester hour A quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour F 69 and below 0.0 quality points per semester hour

4 4 VI. CLASS POLICIES A. Please be familiar with the MABTS attendance policies printed in the Catalog. ABSENCES ARE NOT MANDATORY!!! Students have a maximum of nine absences during the semester. Three tardy marks are equal to one absence. B. Exams missed due to an un-excused absence cannot be made up. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with the professor to make up exams missed because of an excused absence. C. The student must earn the full percentage of points for each grade. A score or average of 94.7 points is 94%, therefore, a B. D. All assignments must be completed if you are to pass the course. E. Make sure that you put your name on your work. This rule applies to all work done in this course. VII. CLASS CONDUCT 1. All talking should stop when the bell rings. Students should be attentive to the prayer requests of other class members. 2. No one is to leave the classroom until the class ends unless it is an emergency. 3. Computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices may be used for taking notes or other class related activities. Surfing the internet, texting, twittering, etc. are not permitted. Students who abuse this policy will not be allowed to bring such devices to class. 4. Class is not dismissed until the professor dismisses the class (even after the bell rings). 5. Students should exhibit a Christ-like attitude and demeanor at all times. After a warning, points will be deducted from the student s grade for violation of any of the above rules. VIII. MEETINGS WITH THE PROFESSOR Usually the professor is available to meet with students immediately after class. For appointments at other times, please see the professor or his assistant in the Doctor of Ministry office.
