For more on VGS, please visit: The Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter Founded 1960 ISSN Vol. XXXVIII, No Byrd Avenue, Suite 104, Richmond, VA November 2012 About two million American soldiers, sailors, and marines served with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in Europe from 1917 to 1919 during and just after World War I (WWI). Surviving envelopes and postcards document their service and show locations served, military rank, service role, and unit numbers that help fill gaps due to the 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center. 1 This paper presents five envelopes and a postcard sent home to Virginia with basic genealogical details on the senders and recipients. The author purchased four items on the internet for $5 to $15 each, and two items are from postal history vendors who have given permission for use of their photographs to Philgen.org, the philatelic genealogy web site and database ( 2 All locations are in Virginia except where noted. As with any source of genealogical information, old envelopes and postcards must be studied in combination with other sources before reaching a conclusion. Mrs. Robert J. Hawkins of Monarat received an envelope from Pvt [Private] Walter P. Hawkins, Co[mpany] M, 116th Inf[antry] postmarked January 1, 1919 [figure 1]. Sarah F. (Mrs. Robert J.) and 1. Walter W. Figure 1 is from Jim Forte Postal History ( postalhistory.com/ : accessed 4 November 2012), and Figure 4 is from nalwife, an ebay vendor. The author has no financial interest in these vendors sales. Philatelic Genealogy: Writing Home to Virginia in World War I Walter P. Hawkins, mother and son, are in Gossin (Gossan) Mines (about ten miles north of Galax) in the 1920 U.S. census. 3 The envelope has a censor s stamp and signature that were applied after an officer verified that the envelope and letter did not indicate the soldier s location, his unit s morale, anticipated troop movement, or other information that could be useful if the envelope or letter fell into the hands of the German army. 4 The Army Post Office (APO) U.S. census, Carroll County, Virginia, population (pop.) schedule, Blair precinct, Gossin Mines (written in far-left column), enumeration district (ED) 16, sheet 7B (penned), dwelling 135, family 136, Robert P.
