Job Search 1. Do not resign from your current position until all employment verification s and background checks are complete; you never know what may come back. Better safe than sorry. 2. Do not lie on your application about your salary. Many people believe that if they round, it won t really matter. If an employer finds this out, chances are that they will rescind their offer. The tip here: Dig up your W2 before going on an interview. Be honest and accurate. 3. Why should I ping my resume? A pinged resume is an updated resume. When we submit our resume to any database, as new people apply, your resume is pushed down because it is older. Update your resume on career sites every few days to stay at the top of queue when employers are searching for candidates. Any change qualifies as an update; a character change, punctuation or a new word. 4. Learn the basics of Boolean searching and understand how you can utilize it in your job search. 5. Don t be afraid to search Craigslist for jobs; just do research on the company offering the job. 6. Attend as many career fairs as you can. Not only can it lead to good job possibilities, it will also help give you interviewing practice. 7. If you are looking for a job while you are employed, be sure to change your privacy settings on all of your social media outlets; most importantly LinkedIn. 8. After applying to any job, research that company on LinkedIn and see if you can find somebody relevant to reach out to via phone to follow up on your application. 9. If you went to college, don t be afraid to reach out to the career services department. They have resources and connections that can help you in your job search and it s all free. 10. Are you currently employed while searching for a job? Then start keeping a daily journal of all the activities that you do. This will help when you begin interviewing to recollect your stories and examples. If you are unemployed, think back to your last job and write down all the projects that you ve worked on. 11. Before going in to an interview, be sure to research the company s culture online. Use websites like glassdoor.com to gain an insider s perspective of the company. 12. Try job searching at a local coffee shop. Not only do they have free Wi-Fi, but you never know who you might meet. Sit at a big table and invite people to come sit with you. 13. Statistically, applying to jobs on Sunday will give you the best odds of having your resume seen. 14. While job searching, keep a log of all the jobs you apply to, along with their descriptions. This way when an employer calls, you can quickly look up the job and know how to properly present your skills and experiences. 15. Do not apply to every job a company offers. You will confuse the HR professional / recruiter who is screening resumes. They will think, if this person doesn t know what job they want, how am I supposed to know? 16. Ever heard that searching for a job is a full-time job? It s true, so don t just do a few hours per week, do 40 hours! No one said it would be easy. 4
17. Starting a blog is free and you can write about anything. Show the world that you are a thought leader and authority in your profession. This is a great way to show your future employer that you stay on top of new trends and that you re passionate about what you do. 18. Are you on and If not you should be and if you don t know these websites, look them up and join they re free! 19. Do you know your score? You should and so should your future employer. 20. Websites like Hoover s can provide you great information on a prospective company. If you cannot afford the subscription, head over to your local library where it s usually free. 21. Have you ever Googled yourself? You should because employers will be doing it and you should know what comes up. 22. Many job seekers put such a strong focus on their inventory of skills and stories that they forget to really show the interviewer their passion for the job. Passion comes in many forms; for the job, the industry, career path, company mission or a personal reason. Whatever it is, it doesn t really matter. Find it and showcase it! 23. Be sure that your references know that you are actively job searching and to expect phone calls. 24. You can use Google alerts for updates from companies/people when they re posted to the internet. 25. Create an unrealistic goal and define how you will work towards it every day. Don t limit your potential! Resume 26. Reverse engineer the job description: Resumes are not one-size-fits-all; you must create your resume for the job. Here s an example for a Help Desk Technician: if the job description says, Provide Tier 1 help desk support to end users on various technical issues, then your resume should use the same language to say something such as, Responsible for Tier 1 help desk support for all end users on technical issues such as 27. Proofread your resume before sending it anywhere. a. To a recruiter or hiring manager, there is nothing more disappointing than looking at a great resume and then seeing detail oriented spelled wrong! In addition, check your grammar! 28. Don t let your resume lack the specifics that the reader is looking for. a. The reader of your resume is looking to determine if you can be a potential solution to their problem. Tell them in details how you can solve their problem based on your experiences. 29. Your resume has too much day-to-day and no accomplishments. a. No one is going to read a resume that is filled with daily responsibilities the reason being is that those are expected of you; if you didn t do those then you wouldn t have a job. Instead, a hiring manager wants to read about your accomplishments and the projects you ve worked on. It s these examples that can help them understand how you are the right fit for the job. 30. Don t let your resume be visually too busy. a. Some people believe the fancier I can be the better. When the average recruiter is spending 5-7 seconds on your resume, you do not want them to guess where your name is or to go hunting to find out where you work. If they can t find it in 1-2 seconds, it is just about a guarantee that they re already on the next resume. 5
31. You should have five resumes, not one. a. With resumes, there isn t a one-size-fits-all; you need to create at least 3-5 resumes. Each one should highlight a different skill and target the specific job you are applying for. This will show the hiring manager how you are a specialist and not a generalist. 32. There are four words that you can use today to supercharge your resume; Spearhead, Enhanced, Consolidated, Executed. Now, just adding these words won t do that much, what you add after these words will be what makes the difference. These are power words that can start your bullets off powerfully. Social Media 33. Pros and cons of using social media in your job search. Use social media wisely and carefully. a. Pros: Connect with and follow companies that you want to work for or find interesting. b. Cons: Connect with and follow people whom you find interesting. Become an industry thought leader by sharing ideas and opinions. Stay up to date on the news impacting your professional industry. People who are shy can instantly be seen as extroverts. Allows you to reacquaint with old friends. Share pictures and videos of fun times with your friends within reason. Hackers have an opportunity to steal and misuse personal information. Too much online interaction can minimize and hurt face-to-face time. Anyone can post or tag regrettable information or photos of you. You can lose a job or relationship from misuse. 34. Expand your LinkedIn network connection possibilities by joining groups. You are allowed to join up to 50 so be sure to join relevant groups and most importantly be a part of the community! 35. Do you follow companies on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and Instagram? You should, as they provide unique information to their followers/connections on those outlets. 36. Use a professional picture on all of your social media profiles. No selfies! 37. Reach out to past employees, colleagues, bosses, managers and college alumni and ask for written references on LinkedIn. 38. Prioritize the endorsements you receive on LinkedIn. Put what you think is most important first! 6
Networking % percent of all hires in the United States are made through referrals from current employees of the company. This means that if you are not networking, the odds are that you will only have a 25% percent of landing a job. Get out and network! 40. Networking in-person: Find groups related to your job, a town/city get-together or meetings, religious organizations, library groups, career fairs, etc. There are endless places where you can go to meet other people. The point is to get out there and meet new people. 41. Networking on social media: The key is to be careful. Social media outlets are easy places to let go. Maybe have a debate with a friend over politics or post last weekend s pictures. During the job search everything must remain professional. These outlets can become strong job searching tools if used correctly. Do not give any reason for a hiring manager not to hire you because of something silly on your Facebook profile. 42. Networking on LinkedIn: Yes, LinkedIn is social media, but in the job search it can be so much more. Think of it as the congregation of all hiring managers and recruiters. You must build a phenomenal profile that showcases your skills and expertise to show the hiring manager/recruiter, here is what I can do for you. 43. Networking with friends and family: The old saying, It s not what you know, it s who you know, is still true to this day. Your best advocates will always be your friends and family. When you begin your job search, tell them! Let them know exactly what you re looking for and ask them if they can connect you to anyone they know. 44. If you are afraid of networking, start small. Ask your immediate contacts if they would be your referral. By asking this simple question, you are telling them that you are looking for opportunities and politely asking them to remember you if they hear about any opportunities. 45. People enjoy hearing their name. Be sure to remember it and repeat back to them. Find out a tactic that works for you to remember their name and use it consistently. You will find that your networking will come much easier with something as simple as repeating someone s name. 46. Whether you have a job or you re unemployed, you know something that somebody else doesn t. Find a job seeker and become their mentor! Teach them what you have learned throughout your career. Once again, you never know who that other person knows OR who they know who knows someone. 47. Use to meet like-minded people. It can also help you meet new professionals in your industry or profession. 7
Phone Interview 48. Answering phone screen questions Sounds simple, but too many times people try to avoid the answer and try to make up something that they think the interviewer wants to hear. Phone screens are about seeing if you and your background are a fit. They are asking these specific questions for a reason. 49. Do not take phone interviews from a car This drives recruiters crazy because it indicates that you aren t taking the interview seriously or you don t want to block off time to focus on the interview. 50. Build a rapport Recruiters are looking for that small glimmer of connection. Show some personality, tell a joke (non-offensive), or ask about their background. You only have a small window of time, use every second to your advantage and try to build a connection. 51. Be sure to have your phone interview questions prepared and prioritized as you will only have a few minutes for questions. Don t flood them with questions, save those for the in-person interview. In-Person Interview 52. Rambling: It is important to keep your answers concise and to the point. Sometimes interviewers will want to talk to you so they can get to know you and that s okay, but remember you only have minutes of their time. You want to be sure to use it wisely and give them the opportunity to ask several questions so they can learn as much as possible about you and your qualifications. 53. Body Language: Practice interviewing with a friend. Many interviewers today are being trained on how to pick up on body language cues because your body language tells a lot about your character. Have your friend watch your mannerisms, where your eyes drift off to and your posture. 54. Interview hand-outs When you go to any interview, you should always carry a few things; at least 5-10 copies of your resume, references (with contact info) and any supplemental information to back up your experience. Supplemental information could be any projects or successful accomplishments you are proud of that you can show the interviewer. 55. Become genuinely interested in the interviewer Before all the business stuff happens in an interview, there is the fun part. This is usually the first 5-10 minutes where the interviewer will ask an ice-breaker type question to relax the tension. This is your time to have fun and make a connection. It s the lack of connection that can possibly ruin the interview before it even starts. 56. Smile Whether you are in-person or on a phone call, smiling while talking is critical. It has been proven that if you smile when you talk, you will sound happier, appear happier, but also feel happier. Think of it this way; the opposite would be to frown. Would you hire someone who just frowned the whole time? 57. Be a good listener Nothing makes interviewers more upset then when you do not listen. It is arguably one of the most important business skills any one can have. This is simple, when you are at an interview; be there! 58. Encourage others to talk about themselves While an interview should be 50/50, in terms of both of you talking, everyone likes to hear themselves speak. In this case, if the interviewer starts telling you a story, encourage them on and listen! If possible, when giving your next answer to a question, relate back to the story to prove you listened and to show them you liked their story. 8
59. Talk in terms of the other person s interests It is important to make a connection with the interviewer right away. Find something that interests them and talk about it. It could be a book, a movie, a recent article you read. Remember though, nothing controversial! 60. Make the other person feel important and do so sincerely Many people feel that when they are being interviewed by their peers that the interview s not important because they re not the hiring manager. I cannot stress enough, it does not matter who is interviewing you; Make them feel important. 61. If you re wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically It happens to the best of us; we are trying to remember some statistic or number and it doesn t come to us so we say the closest number we can think of. Then the interviewer corrects you. It s okay, own the mistake. The interviewer will appreciate your honesty and think more highly of you because of it. 62. Begin in a friendly way - Whenever you are explaining or talking about something, always do so in a friendly manner. For example, if you are talking about a prior boss or company, do so in a friendly manner. People want to hire optimistic and friendly people, not the opposite. 63. If you receive a second and/or third interview, don t be afraid to ask for an office tour. It will be this tour that will give you a real-time culture check. Look to see if manager s doors are open or if people are talking to each other. Know what you want and look for it! 64. Change the way you ask your questions to the interviewer. Focus on asking the individual their opinion instead of the company s opinion. For example: What s the company culture like here? versus, what are three aspects you like about the culture here? 65. Define yourself as a solution instead of only what you re good at? In order to land the job in the interview, you must represent your personal brand as a solution, Here is what I can do and here is why this is your best solution. You are more than what you are good at, show them that! 66. Don t try and memorize answers to interview questions. A good interviewer will pick up on what you are doing and will change his/her interviewing strategy. Work on perfecting your stories as examples to back up your answers. Interview Questions 67. Behavior Interview Question Prep a. Tell me a time when something unplanned happened during your day. How did you deal with it? This kind of question is commonly asked in most interviews regardless of what kind of job. What the interviewer is looking to get out of you, deviously, is to see if you are an organized person. If you are organized, then most unplanned events should be easy to manage. However, emergencies always come up throughout the day and interviewer will really be seeking your ability to multi-task. Even the most organized person will still have unplanned things occur. They will want to hear how you handled them and then how you will in the future. As a bonus, you can also explain the outcome of the unplanned event and how, because of your diligence, everything turned out successful. 9
68. General Interview Question Prep a. How do you handle pressure, conflict and/or stress? This question, on the surface, seems easy. The answer is always, Great. While that may seem to be the correct answer, it couldn t be more wrong! A big rule of interviewing is NEVER give one word answers. You should answer this question telling a story. This story is something that has happened to you in the past. If you have limited work experience then you can speak about a college project or a time when you were volunteering. The interviewer is not looking for the obvious here, how you handle stress, however they are looking to see how you work under pressure and still produce successful results. 69. Testing Interview Question Prep a. What challenges do you think you might expect in this job if you were hired? This question, unfortunately, catches many people off-guard. It is easy to say, I believe the challenges I will face are (1) nothing (2) meeting a sales goal (3) immediately decreasing X project time (4) learning all software interfaces, etc While those are logical answers and make sense, again, they re the wrong answers. You d essentially be telling the interviewer everything you would NOT be able to do, thus how you would be the wrong person to hire. Instead, you can give examples such as, getting to know the whole team, learning all policies and procedures, or red tape. As a bonus, you should follow up all of your answers, no matter what you say, with how you would overcome those challenges. Again, you have to remember, any and all interviews are about providing solutions. 70. Stressful Interview Question Prep a. Are you under/over qualified for this job? It would seem the obvious answer to this question is, No, but as stated above, you never want to give one word answers to any interview question. Instead, take this opportunity to restate why you are the best person for the job. You have to talk about the specific value you would bring to the organization. This strategy does change a bit depending on if you actually are under or over qualified, but either way, this question is designed to see whether or not you can sell yourself along with convincing the interviewer that they should hire you. 71. Tricky Interview Question Prep a. How many jellybeans will fit in a car? WHAT!? Is this a real question? Yes, it sure is, and it s actually one of the more common questions being asked in companies such as Zappos, Google and Facebook. It s a question that tests your creative thinking abilities as well as your ability to think outside of the box. The right way to answer this question is to ask questions back. You must be inquisitive and challenge what seems to be the status quo. The interviewer wants to see if will you just accept a project and start working on it with no questions asked OR will you question them and fully understand the project you will be working on. 10
Thank You Letters 72. Be Sincere: Above anything else, be sincere and genuine. Write the thank you note like you really care. At the end of the day, if the interview went great or horrible, the interviewer could have met with hundreds of other people, but they decided to meet with you. 73. Personalize: Chances are you will be meeting with more than one person. This means you cannot simply send the same note to each. It is crucial that you write down notes after each interview that is personal to the interviewer and then reuse that in your thank you letter that you write to them. It proves to them that you were listening. 74. Write What You Forgot: A thank you letter can be a good time to write what you forgot to say in the interview. Whether you were nervous or ran out of time, take this time to say what you forgot. Just keep it short and to the point. 75. Act Fast: The faster you can send it out, the better off you will be. You want to the interviewer to be wowed by your ability to follow up and write a thoughtful letter. 11
