2 Notebook Question What are some of your dreams? What does the life you ve imagined look like? Goals A goal is a dream that you are dedicated to; therefore, you plan and work for it. The requirements of a goal can be determined by breaking down the elements of the above definition. 2

3 Goals A goal is a dream that you are dedicated to; therefore, you plan and work for it. Dream: First, you must know what you want. You must be able to specify what you want in writing. Goals A goal is a dream that you are dedicated to; therefore, you plan and work for it. Dedicated To: To be dedicated to something, you must be willing to make personal sacrifices in order to achieve it. Therefore, you must be in the action stage of change. 3

4 Goals A goal is a dream that you are dedicated to; therefore, you plan and work for it. Plan: A goal does not just happen; you must plan how it will happen. What does it take to achieve? How you will do it? When does it need to be done? Who do you need to help you? Where must it be completed? Goals A goal is a dream that you are dedicated to; therefore, you plan and work for it. Work: You must work hard to reach your goal. It may not be easy. Therefore, you must stay motivated in order to keep yourself working. 4

5 Motivation The following elements will help keep you motivated and focused when working on your goal. Write well: A goal must be wellwritten, so you can review it and know exactly what you should be doing. Motivation Network: You need to tell people about your goal, so you can gain ownership of your goal. You do this by telling others because they will ask you about your progress. 5

6 Motivation Track: Tracking your progress will help you see what you have done and what remains to be done. Motivation Remind Yourself: You can remind yourself by placing notes around the house or at school or by changing your environment in a way that will remind you of your goal. 6

7 Motivation Reward Yourself: The rewards you establish should be as great or greater than the barriers you will face. Action Plan Now that you know what a goal is, it s time to take ACTION! An action plan is the goal-setting process established to guide you in writing and achieving well-specified goals. 7

8 Action Plan There are six steps in an action plan: 1) Specify the goal. 2) Specify what needs to be done. 3) Specify your support system. 4) Specify your timeframe. 5) Specify how you will track progress. 6) Specify how you will be rewarded. Step 1 Step 1: Specify the goal. Is the goal a long-term or short-term goal? 8

9 Step 1 A short-term goal is a goal that can be accomplished in a shorter amount of time. For example, a short-term goal could be getting a good grade on your term project in one of your classes. Step 1 A long-term goal is a goal that takes a longer amount of time, sometimes months or even years. Long-term goals are often broken up into several short-term goals. For example, a long-term goal could be getting a good grade in a class or getting a scholarship for college. 9

10 Step 2 Step 2: Specify what needs to be done. What tasks must be achieved in order to reach my goal? How will I do it? Where does it need to be done? Step 3 Step 3: Specify your support system. Who can help me do it? Who can help motivate me? 10

11 Step 4 Step 4: Specify your timeframe. When does each task need to be completed? When do I want to achieve the ultimate goal? Step 5 Step 5: Specify how you will track your progress. Will I use checkpoints or deadlines along the way? Have I written and given a copy of my action plan to friends and family? 11
