Worthington Global Market Focus Group 2 July 27 th 2017 M: Welcome to our focus group. We have food and drinks available, so feel free to eat during the focus group. Just keep crunching to a minimum. Let s start by going around the room, saying our names and where we re from. Let s start here. R: I m Scott Voss. I m actually from Adrian, MN, and now I live in Marshall. I have for about 10 years. R: My name is Leah Schmidt. I m from Atwater, MN. I now live in Cottonwood, MN. R: My name is Liz Roy. I m from Ellsworth, and now from Marshall. R: I m Brittany Kroll. I grew up in the Wood Lake, MN area and now I live in Marshall. R: John Alcorn, I grew up in Walnut Grove. R: I m Ola, from Atlanta, GA, originally from Nigeria. R: Jerry, and I m originally from Philadelphia, PA. R: Doug Simon, originally from SD, living in Marshall. R: Linda Baun, originally from Morton, MN, living in Marshall. I ve lived in Marshall longer than Morton, though. M: Do you have any interest in shopping for items related to a specific culture? Why or why not? R: No R: Yes, if you are talking about going out for Mexican food, that counts. We have Thai restaurant resulting in a little bit of variety in Marshall, MN. R: I would say it s good if we are talking about grocery items. Usually, if it s cultural items, you would like to travel to get it and bring it back. That s what I want and would do. R: We like to cook and eat Mexican food, we often buy the ingredients and cook. R: Most people are more interested in the food, if you want to learn about a new culture, you learn the bad words first then you learn where to get the food for that culture. Growing up in a multicultural society, I have always been interested in trying out different kind of cuisine. Wherever I go, I want to know where the Chinese restaurant is and the Mexican restaurant. Burritos and etcetera. A little bit, in terms of clothing, I think it depends for me personally if there is no event to wear the particular attire to, I don t see any reason for going to get that attire or items. For example, with the International Student Association, which I am an active member of, we do have events at least once in an academic year, sometimes twice, where we have to wear something that

represents our culture. That might be a time to shop for some cultural items just to show case your cultural heritage. M: How often do you shop for things related to a specific culture not necessarily your own? R: I think for me anytime we go grocery shopping, speaking of things to make Mexican food or Asian food at home, I would probably be interested in other cultures too if I knew how to make it. You know, I am just stuck to the basic Tacos, Bourttos. R: For me it s really how often I see certain vendors, my wife pays for these spicy food, I enjoy it. So, when I am at home, I don t make that, we don t have it. Except they give to me a left over. So if I m going to my friend, we actually spend some time in Iowa area, I would experience a lot more different food, I might see him five to six times a year, afterwards, I may try couple things, say like ten times a year, I would go for something M: How about the rest of you, how often do you eat at restaurants that serve different cultural foods R: Does Hyvee Chinese count? I mean there are restaurants in town (Marshall) like Four Seas and the two Mexican restaurants in town. M: What certain items do you shop for that are related to these specific cultures? R: We have said this before, so that we won t be going back too many times. Sour sauce R: I would say spices, sea food R: I am particularly interested in sea food, just this past weekend, I had the linguini that has nine different kinds of sea food. I never had prawns before or mushroom, calamari looks like it was fried, shrimps and all kinds of sea food. Being a vegetarian of some sort, I usually eat fish and only eat sea food of fish. It s is an opportunity for me to sample Italian cuisine. R: Looking at food frequency. When it comes to like American food, I would rather eat lots of that than to eat more of other stuff R: Usually if we want food from other culture, we go to restaurants, we don t much try to make it at home. Personally, because I have a family that is very picky. Like Scott might be the only one that would eat it. But I didn t like it. I joined my managers last year at an Indian restaurant, the rest loved and enjoyed the food. It wasn t just my taste, I am not planning to go back. M: Where do you typically shop for these items we are talking about? R: Hyvee R: Maybe amazon, yes, I buy some food on amazon R: Sam s Club

R: We had the monthly food fund raiser with the SMSU ISO. We looked all over for the ingredient for bubble tea. We eventually got it on amazon and it arrived in a couple of days. We looked everywhere, we even tried to make ours. But it didn t work out. You will be amazed what you find online when shopping for cultural foods M: How many of you buy these items online? R: I do (5 people said they do) M: On average, how much do you spend on items that we are discussing, I mean these food items? R: I have only bought the pro a couple of times, and it only cost about $10 each. I think it was 500grams and I haven t had to buy anything food related online. But I have bought clothing online, but I wouldn t say it is an indigenous cultural signifies buying clothing there. R: $500 a year M: How much do you spend at restaurants R: $60 - $70 a month M: Do you buy any of these food at Walmart? R: Yes, we do. I sometimes go to the Cities at a store called Dragon Star, the store sells foods from almost all countries. I typically spend about $70 every other month and buy some typical stuff at Walmart. M: How far would you be willing to travel to find these items? R: Usually, it s not traveling, it s not a special trip R: Honestly, if I had wanted to buy something, I would probably buy here than to spend more money traveling to buy them M: On a scale of one to ten, with ten very important, and one being not important at all, what is your level of satisfaction with this store you shop at? R: For me I would say 5, just because we are not shopping enough for these items. I have a small child at home, she s going to eat some basics like spaghetti, tacos. I agree, they have everything I need R: I agree, they have everything I need R: I guess if I have to go the Asian restaurant, Thai restaurant two Mexican restaurant that are cultural, I m easily dissatisfied. I enjoy going downtown to have a meal at Teriyaki. I always know the quality and service. We have done that once every two months as a family. I drop about $80 - $90 at least.

R: I would say about 5 also, I don t have a lot of call for it. I m not necessarily the biggest fan of the Mexican restaurant in town. They are okay, but they are not like I look forward to going to that kind of place. M: If you could, what would you change about the place you shop at? What would make the number go up? R: I m satisfied R: Mine was a 10. They have everything I need R: Yes for me. Stores like Hyvee or Walmart recipes are not easily accessible. We don t know how to make much of that stuff. This may be our family issue, we lack education of the food to make out of what we buy. R: Samples are good. For example, at Sam club, you can have a bit of the food M: If you are to mention the top ten activities that you would enjoy pursuing regarding R: Demonstration will be more appealing. I m tasting and learning how to make it R: At Hindi store here in Marshall, they sell food stuff and also cook for people as well. During the muslin fasting they provided food for the mosque. The food was provided by the Hindi store, you can see them cooking the food at one section of the store, so you know how it s done. R: The Taiwan MBA students when they come in, Cori Ann (Graduate Office Director) always cook for them and they also in turn cook and teach her how to make their cultural foods. M: How many other people do you know who have similar interest as you shopping for cultural items? R: I have children, it s all about family related activities R: Most of my friends will be interested in that. Simply because I know a lot of international students and some of them are still adjusting to the American food. They would typically ask their parents to send food for them all the way from Africa. I am already accustomed to the food here but I still cook African foods at home. M: Even if you do never shop for cultural items before, if a shopping facility was available at your community, would you be interested in shopping? R: It depends R: It depends on what they are offering R: To me it depends on how I can use them M: Do you have friends and family who may be interested?

R: I think it s mainly food. We dress the way Americans dress, there is no need to purchase African dresses. In the international food festival, culture shock R: I buy like Indian scarves and different things like that, such as accessories. M: We are considering building our global market in Worthington, what would you need to offer as far as cultural items for you to be interested in shopping there? For example, Food, Health and Beauty Supplies, Clothing, Accessories, Art Supplies, Books, Organic Items, Performances, Religious and Historical items organic product R: All of the above! I think we have all hit the nail on the head. If people will be interested to drive all the way to get something that they normally wouldn t get on a regular basis. There should be some activities, participation and performances. For example, how to cook different cultural foods, have people dress up and sing. R: You could have a country a month. R: You definitely need a restaurant, to drive an hour. My friends and I wouldn t drive an hour to just go shopping. M: Another thing is that they wanted to have a community kitchen where they would demonstrate how to cook cultural foods, have samples, and do community kid programs as far as attractions that aren t just items. R: That sounds like it s on the right track for people to drive an hour down to Worthington. R: I miss my Turkish coffee, bring that back. It s basically mud. What about furniture. R: Yeah! R: Home accessories, Persian rugs if you want to make your home look different. R: I look for things that are handmade, made in America, or made by an ethnic group. That s important. R: I go to the World Market in Sioux Falls and they have scarves and jewelry and rugs and unique furniture, whether or not they re authentic, I don t know. M: Do you know of anyone else who shops at the World Market in Sioux Falls? R: I don t know specifically. I d assume they do. R: There s one in Roseville that my sister and family shop there. R: My husband and kids because they re forced to come with me. R: I don t know if I would go down to Worthington to go to that store when I could drive an extra 15 minutes to go to the World Market and experience things in Sioux Falls, a bigger city with more things to do. I like to make a full day out of it.

R: An hour is kind of a long drive for dinner. R: It needs to be more of an event-based thing. R: It depends on the location because in Worthington there are some very tucked-back locations. You start getting into the downtown businesses that are on the other side of Okibina. You can take 60 to get around, but as long as it s accessible. Adrian is accessible, like 15 minutes away from Worthington. I d be willing to go to Worthington on 59 and cut over to check out the store, but if it s a long way into Worthington, there would need to be a restaurant to drive me back there. M: So the general feel I m getting is that there s not a large interest for items, just food and activities. The community kitchen is appealing. R: For me, musical instruments and food would be the ones I would drive there for. With two young kids, I believe in the arts so I think it s cool and fun for kids. M: Are there any specific brands it would carry to make it more appealing to you? R: Not for me R: No M: Okay, so nobody. R: I think people are looking for handcrafted items M: So going back, is there a specific location for it to make it more appealing? Downtown area? R: I think Oxford or on the main drag R: Easily accessible R: Right off the freeway, the old prairie expo. A company bought that. That kind of location would be good. R: Their best market might be downtown for tourism in Okibina to see the actual location. Panda house, I guess they have some ethnic locations down there as well, but for me it would be on Oxford, which is their main drag. M: So for out of town, you want it on the edge of town is what I'm getting? R: Yeah R: Yes M: What do you think the days and hours of operation should be? When are you likely to stop by? R: Nights and weekends R: Yeah, nights and weekends?

M: How late at night? R: Depends because if the restaurant has an open bar, then maybe 10 or midnight R: With no entertainment, 8 or 9 is the latest I d be there. If there was an open mic night then later R: Or just Thursday, Friday, Saturday instead of concentrating on all week, just days people would be available or evenings. M: If it is built, how supportive would you be? How supportive would your community be? R: Marshall Community or Worthington community? M: Marshall community if you re from Marshall R: So-so. It would be better if they were in Marshall. R: Closer would be better. R: If they have other food stuff, I m sure other students would be willing to go there. Lots of international students and graduate students in Marshall. They would go there instead of going all the way to the cities for food. M: Do you think a lot of them do go to the cities for African food? R: Yes, the Nepalese students do too. R: Ola, I know you do a lot of shopping for the International food festival? Would you be more apt to go to a place like this instead of where you currently go? R: Absolutely. It might create some ideas if they have other stuff going on, like selling other cultural items. We might purchase those as well. And musical performances, we always look for those for the cultural band or acrobats and say Oh we saw those guys, why don t they come play for us? R: They could also do group sales to bundle things together for festivals. If you know what you want, can they send it up here? R: Is there already anything like that within an hour in Willmar or Brookings? There are towns that may offer a little more than Worthington has to offer in addition. M: The town itself plays a large role in whether or not you d stop by for the day? R: Yes R: Yes R: Yes M: What s the best way to make your community aware of the Global Market?

R: Social media, Facebook R: I still like getting mail, and social media, yes. There are places in Marshall that I don t know about too because if you re not getting notifications on social media you may never hear about it. M: On a scale from 1 to 10 how important to Southwest Minnesota would a Global Market in Worthington be? R: I d give it a 4 R: 4 R: I was going to say 5 R: 5 is where I m at probably R: I d say a 6 because it s practical for international students, potentially higher. It depends on if they have a lot of attractions or if they just sell stuff. R: I d say in our area probably almost a 6 just what Ola said with the population coming in Marshall, we are becoming more diverse. Worthington is a diverse county as well. They did a study that said Lyon and Nobles counties were the only two that were growing and it s because of Marshall and Worthington. So for our area, it s probably a 6. M: Is there anything else you d like to add? Any reasons why it should or should not be built? Any opinions? R: They ll have to do a lot of upfront marketing to get the word out about what s going on. And they might have to use a lot of different media so someone from my generation who s not following Facebook the way I should but I still read the Marshall Independent They need to know which sides of the market they re trying to attract to see who s going to be their main market. Make an effort to build visibility and build connections. Someone in Worthington needs to have a Marshall connection. R: I feel like they have to connect to an organization if they want to build quickly. Connect to Worthington and Marshall high schools so if they re in cooking classes it can show them how to make it but also here s where this came from. If I learn about something from class or a friend, then I m much more likely to go than if I knew nothing about it beforehand. R: Do a little promotion if they decide to go with the food part of it, they can connect with our culinology program to get some visibility in the university. R: As far as the hours and days to be open for operation, Marshall in the summer is a ghost town on weekends. That s something they ll have to keep in mind too. I m not sure what Worthington is like on weekends, but I definitely see that. R: With the lake in Worthington, I think they stick around relatively well.

M: Thanks everybody for coming. We got a lot of feedback that we were hoping for. Thank you!
